The XBOX 360 is 4 years old today

What were people playing in the first month?

RIDGE RACER 6!!! That's when people cared about their online ranking, but before it became glitched to high heaven. That and PGR3.
It was interesting how all the owners jumped from every new game release to another, it was like a small community.

Yea I played Ridge Racer 6 for months before I started playing other games :D

my first game was Perfect Dark Zero... not a great start :P

at least it was all better since then :lol

:)

Best Buy tried to shove a bundle deal down every person's throat that waited in line overnight to pick one of these up on launch day (effectively doubling the price by making you buy accessories, more games, controllers, and a live kit). Still sorta pissed about that. It was the dumbest move I've ever seen a retail shop try and pull. Then when I got home after arguing that I'm only buying what I came for, the unit's graphics chip was malfunctioning and I had to get it replaced.

Fast forward to now: I'm on my sixth xbox and I haven't had to pay for repairs/replacements yet (got last charge refunded when they rolled out the 3yr RROD warranty). Anyway, it's been great and it certainly has been my most played console the last four years.

yeah, realised this a couple of months ago. 360 been out about the same time as xbox1 was supported.

difference is I have quite a few fond gamering memories from xbox1, and pretty much none except ridgeracer6 from 360. also got more xbox1 games than 360 ones, and that's even counting downloads. damn, 360 is a joke.

I bought this yesterday and am playing through it for the first time now.

To be honest I was excited because I was HD gaming. Looking back I think it was a teeny bit derivative and the art aesthetic was a mess. Still fun though.

ok

Can't believe it's been four years. Though there are things I'd change about it (add wi-fi, make all the "tabs" on the NXE selectable, and allow users to back-up game saves directly to the PC instead of having to use a memory unit), it's still the console I use the most.

Congrats to MS for sticking it out when everyone thought they'd fail.

I played my 360 a ton and loved every minute until it died. Now it is a Trials HD, Rock Band and Bayonetta demo machine. That isn't a bad thing, but getting a RROD really soured me on the whole 360 experience (that is the first console that has ever died on me)
Don't worry, since the Sega Master System I have never had a console go bad on me, except now, 360 was my first one. At least it happened now that I'm at a age that I can afford my own shit. If that happened when I was a kid I would have been sol.

Doesn't get played as much these days, but the first few months of my first 360 were glorious.

I bought it on it's first b'day in Australia (coincidentally the day the PS3 launched) with PGR3, Kameo and Gears of War. Didn't realise I'd put the component cables in wrong until I started chainsawing Wretches in GoW and blue blood was spraying everywhere. Loved Gotham 3, loved Kameo, enjoyed GoW and still replay it and picked up the first GRAW not long after, which is possibly my favourite shooter on the console.

Sad to say there isn't much on the horizon that's got me interested, but XBLA has been getting better and better.

EDIT: First 360 red ringed twice and got stolen. Current 360 has red ringed once but seems okay. I am very familiar with Microsoft's hardware return system.

So many memories...

I remember Gamestop calling me 3 nights before launch to fuck me out of my pre-order where I paid in full the previous July...

I remember wanting to get up at 3am and get in line at Target. My sink clogged up at 8pm and I went to Target to get Draino and there were already 10 people in line for only 14 systems. I sped home, dropped the Draino off, went back to Target where I was 12th in line by the time I got back.

I remember freezing my ass off and getting miserable around 2am and thinking I had made a mistake.

I remember the huge crowd of people showing up around daybreak only to find out that all systems were accounted for.

I remember the guy in line behind me who showed me the gun in his pocket and telling me that we wouldn't have to worry about anyone cutting in line ahead of us.

I remember some douche bag getting the shit kicked out of the side of his car when he slowly drove by the line while yelling that Target actually didn't get any systems in and we were waiting for nothing...

I remember the first douche bag in line who purchased his system and ran all the way out to his car grabbing his crotch and jumping up and down yelling, "Yeah boi.. yeah boi I gots MINE I gots MINE!!"

I'm not sure how anyone can hold this opinion...

I was going to line up so that I could get it with Perfect Dark Zero, but I had a roommate that went ahead and got in line so I backed out and just bought PDZ instead so glad I only wasted $50 bucks to play at garbage instead of waiting 16 hours in the cold and spending $450. Luckily my friend got Condemned which was so awesome.

RRoD aside, the 360 has largely been a success, and a surprising success (honestly, if you had polled GAF before this generation began which machine would have the lion's share of multiplatform development, perhaps three people would have said the 360, and they would have been ridiculued). Microsoft have done more than anyone else to make online gaming a cornerstore of a given platform, and to bring wider services and features to one box in the living room.

Plus the games are good. Need more original IPs and first party titles, though.

I enjoyed the Xbox1, I had it pretty much throughout it's entire lifetime. As much as I loved Halo CE, Splinter Cell, Morrowind etc...the original Xbox is nothing compared to the 360. The 360's library has already lapped XBOX1 several times, no question. Plus, XBLA is one of the best things ever.

I think the first game I played in HD was Call of Duty 2. I took delivery of the Sony XBR 960 CRT a few weeks after the launch of the console and I was in absolute awe of the image quality. I then played PDZ and Kameo. The graphical quality of Kameo probably impressed me more than any of the other launch titles available. It was just such a lush and colorful game, the imagery just leapt off my screen. It was like seeing videogames in a whole new way and I was completely taken by the whole HD experience. I then got hooked on XBL and spent countless hours playing Ghost Recon online. I was really happy with the purchase.

I don't use it much anymore, but loads of great games during my time when it was my main console. A real Sega feel to the console. My unit is 3 years old and still alive :)

Jesus CHRIST where do you live? :lol

Didnt jump in until 2007 (got mine for Bioshock). Been a very awesome console, and has brought me many of my favorite games. Probably my favorite console since the N64.

I'm not sure if I like the 360 more than my Dreamcast or NES, but holy shit going from primarily gaming on a Gamecube last gen to a 360 this one has made it seem like nirvana.

Please tell me this post is a joke.

/\/\/\ I still have a launch one that never failed me (or my brother, its current owner).

The 360 is an amazing console. Probably my favorite one ever.

If it wasn't for XBLA, I'd look upon the 360 pretty poorly. I've not really enjoyed many of it's western orientated exclusives much at all, and the original Xbox had a lot better japanese content (Otogi, Smilebit's last hurrah for quality Sega games, Phantom Dust which I have yet to own and play lol Europe, Ninja Gaiden 1 and Black), but I've certainly enjoyed a lot of third party stuff on it and will be playing Bayonetta on it in January, so it does pay to have both HD consoles.

fucking bundles

I jumped in earlier this year (RE5 Elite) but should have done so much earlier.

At the time of launch I remember seeing a dude almost punch the guy working in the St. Enoch's Centre GAME store because when he preordered he wanted the Pro SKU but they only had the Core (or whatever they called the non-HDD systems).

360 in an incredible console. I has become my favourite console ever.

It's mind blowing what a variety of experiences the 360 has provided me with.

Pioneering fantastic online gaming. Played tons of Halo 3, Battlefield Bad Company, Battlefield 1943 and now Modern Warfare 2.

Pioneering DL games. Absolutely in love with Trials HD. Played tons of Poker Smash, Rez HD, Ikaruga and Geometry Wars.

Epic adventures. Been super immersed in Condemned, CoD 2 + 3 + 4 + WaW, Gears of War 1&2, Batman Arkham Asylum, Dead Space, Mirrors Edge, Lost Odyssey, Fallout 3 + 5 expansions, Fable, Grand Theft Auto 4 + Lost & Damned and Ballad of Gay Tony.

Music gaming. Got into music games with 360, playing Guitar Hero World Tour and Rockband Beatles.

Fighting. Heaven with SFIV + TE stick.

Racing. Spent hours and hours in Midnight Club: LA and PGR 3

Overall, it's an incredibly versatile and well rounded console. Only thing I could have used more is Kameo style platformers.

Also my favorite console of all time and I've been gaming since I got a Sears Pong Home Console. Name a system and I've probably owned it. This one is tops.

Got mine in February (or was it March?) of 2006. Picked up DOA4 and PDZ but it wasn’t until Ghost Recon and Oblivion came out that I was really impressed by the system.

IT also RROD’d on me the day Halo 3 came out. soooo I picked up a new one form Walmart that I used for thirty days while waiting for my coffin to come back from MS.

Like some other folks here, the Xbox, 360 and the general resurgence of western developed games on consoles got me back into gaming in a big way after a few years on the periphery. and now that I have all the main consoles gain, I’m more than happy to continue with this gen for another 2 or 3 years.

My mates launch one still works no RROD same with my first bought in August 2006, have it on cardboard boxes and install all games no problems. Perfect.

Bang goes your theory.

I remember going to Zellers (a Canadian chain sort of like WalMart) the first thing in the morning and getting the last one. All fun and enjoyed the first 2 stages of Perfect Dark Zero. Red ringed the second day. Returned it, and had to wait until the end of December to find a new one.

I remember the pain that was the 360 shortage at launch. Didn't get mine until Dec 24th '05. Couldn't believe when I finally got the call. COD2 and Kameo were my launch games. So good.

Ah yes, Condemned was an amazing launch game. PGR3 and CoD2 were a lot of fun too.

Too bad my launch 360 is no longer with me. But it provided me with some great times. There's something special about buying a console at launch, I'll have to think twice about doing it again though.

Beware of echoes...

The Xbox 360 carries on the fine tradition of being the crown jewel console of its generation, complete with a fantastic library and a bevy of technical issues.

Playstation, PS2, Xbox 360...

There is no doubt in my mind that it has surely plucked the feather from Sony's cap.

It didn't do it the same way, but managed to accumulate one of the best libraries of any console, ever. The relative handful of exclusives, combined with great multi-platform titles, ensure that it will, despite the fucking horrible RRODs, be fondly remembered for years to come. And though it's GUI has progressed from something I loved to something I've come to sort-of loathe, I can't help but think they've made significant headway with this trojan horse-media hub scheme that they've been pushing for o-so-long (particularly after this last update).

There are other consoles in my home, but right now, it's the only one I really need and I'd be more than satisfied if it was all I had...so long as it, y'know, kept running and everything. ;)

The 360 officially got launched here in march06 so by then GRAW was already out...man, so many fond memories with that game; I remember staying up very late just to complete the campaign again on the hardest difficulty...and GRAW was my first experience playing online on a console too. Ahhhh the countless nights spent fragging (damn multiplayer lobby music! you'll forever haunt me!)

I bought my first one back in September 2006 (PAL) with Condemned and Prey to go with it. The disc drive broke on me a week later so I switched it with another unit which is still working fine back home. Gears of War was a fun ride in campaign and co-op (didn't like the mp much) and I remember spending hours upon hours in PGR3.

I then bought a NA NTSC 60gb (falcon) to play asian imports since they're cheaper to order online than buy them at the store. It's been my main unit for a good while until I moved to a different country and left my consoles behind. I picked up an Arcade (Jasper) and a 120gb drive last October because I missed console gaming which is not usually the case for me since I could just do fine with PC gaming during previous generations but for some reason this white box made me love console gaming again (and spend way too much on this hobby now a days).

Agreed. Where are all the racers? Me-too Sequels and Codemasters garbage dominates. Terrible disappointment. Ditched mine six months ago.
