The XBOX 360 is 4 years old today

quite surprised by the number of people saying its their favourite ever console tbh, don't get me wrong it is a really good platform, console wise it sucks (poor aesthetics, reliability, lack of wifi etc) but as a gaming platform it is good, but what stops it for being the best for me is my disdain...maybe apathy rather than disdain for fps', really don't see how people can like them so much, n64 still the king for me, had soooooo much fun local multiplayer on that console that its unreal.

This thread reminded me that I should play my 360 after 2 months of it being off and collecting dust. It tells me to update the console, so I do. After the update is done, the console turns off and freezes at the Xbox 360 splash logo screen when it goes back on. I turn off the console and turn it back on and I get the RRoD.

Happy Birthday Xbox 360!

4 years and 4 happy memories!

1. getting the red ring of death after 3 months of owning one
2. having to pay to play online games for the first time in my life
3. running an ethernet cable across the hallway in my house since it doesn't come with wi-fi
4. (this is the actual good memory) playing street fighter IV for the first time!

so happy birthday 360. even though you have some excellent games, something tells me I'm not going to remember you very fondly.

PS I canceled my xbox live gold subscription this week.. I decided I don't want to be part of the problem anymore. I know it wont make a difference as everyone else will still pay it but at least I can know I'm doing the right thing.

Belongs somewhere in my top 5 best systems ever. But definitely not the best system ever imo. The system needed/needs more exclusive content to be the best system ever. Especially when you're a multiconsole owner.

But I still enjoy the console. The last few months have been pretty meh though imo.

I got mine at launch and didn't play much until a year later when gears of war came out. Since then I've done more gaming and bought more games than any other time I can recall. It's easily the best gaming exp I have had.

Agreed. Where are all the racers? Me-too Sequels and Codemasters garbage dominates. Terrible disappointment. Ditched mine six months ago.

Just this year:
Forza 3
Dirt 2
Fuel
Outrun Online Arcade
Need For Speed Shift
Race Pro

And Blur is coming soon.

And arguably, Trials HD could be included.

This year has been awesome for racing games on the 360. Though, if you ditched your 360 6 months ago, I guess you wouldn't know that. :D

Ah, good times. Launch system only made it to two years, but I still got my free refurb working somehow, so it's all good. Also had PGR3 and NBA 2K6 as launch titles before the system came out. And I still remember people calling in RROD problems while I was still in the launch line to buy one. :lol

Anyway, maybe not my absolute fav of all time, but it's definitely up there. And there's a lot more to the system than FPS' jesus lol.

My launch console lasted about 2 years then my refurbished console went up last week so I bought an Arcade.

Still my favorite console to date. I camped out in front of Best Buy for a day to get one.

I have bought almost every console on release day or shortly thereafter since the SNES era including the Jaguar, TG16, N64, Saturn--which I paid $400 for it using High School Graduation Money-- Dreamcast etc. Out of all of them the 360 has probably become my favorite console.

Before this generation I was completely platform agnostic. But since the features of Xbox Live have become so important to me, I almost never want to play on any other console. And it isn't that I play alot of multiplayer games or FPS games: I don't. I simply love the ability to chat with friends, message, achievements, and I love Live Arcade. I also liked the way that they have turned Xbox Live itself into a magazine of sorts with new video previews and strategy tips. It is clearly just cleverly disguised marketing, but I was never under any illusions that print magazines were much ore than this to start with.

I just sent my 5th Xbox off for repair two days ago (however I have two, so I always have one running), but despite the headaches, it is still my favorite system and that alone is a huge testament to the platform MS has created.

Did you miss the bit where I typed "me-too" sequels? You might consider spending money on the above worthwhile, but I don't. With short fucking memories like this it's no surprise that the 360 is popular.

I own two and the 360 is my favorite console ever. I play every multiplatform game on 360 even though I own all three consoles, because of Xbox Live and the 360 controller.

My favorite things about the 360 are XBLA and Netflix streaming.

Post pretty much sums up my love for the 360 :D

I rike it

But seriously, I love XBL and XBLA the most. 360 is obviously my favorite platform to play on (PC is a close second)

It's just a shame that MS first party hasn't been so good this generation. Gears of War was not my thing and they've sold off a lot of studios/otherwise aren't doing much new. That's the one thing I envy about the way Sony does things. If MS focused on First Party the way Sony does, it'd be the perfect platform.

Well, that and fix up the hardware. I think they have these days, for the most part.

Good launch, made a good £1000 profit selling on my launches systems that I reserved, I did fall out of one of the local stores though when they found out I had sold on my reserved system for profit, the shop owner said that he only kept a system back for me as I was a regular customer and thought I genuniely wanted to play the system, the thing was I did want to play the system but I couldn't pass up the easy money selling on my reserves to fools that were willing to pay £500-600 for a £279 console.

Happy B Day to one of the best game consoles ever. The phoenix of videogame consoles the content leader which others try to emulate!

You consider Forza 3 and Need for Speed Shift "me-too" sequels? :lol :lol :lol

and here is the problem with lists. But yes, Forza 3 still has dumb fucking AI. Shift is obviously different, but sadly its handling is as artificial and fucked up as the shite spewing out of Codemasters recently.

Well everyone has their opinions I guess, but I loved both those games.

You know it's funny because I bought this console, by all means, as a stop gap to hold me over until PS3.

Dead Rising was the game that made me bite the bullet. I got Dead Rising and Chrome Hounds with my machine. I could max out the character limit of this post gushing over either one of these games.

Gears of War comes, and that's when the 360 went from being a stop gap to a console to keep forever. Instead of selling off the 360 to get a PS3, I ended up selling my launch PS3 (camped 2 days at Walmart) for a cool 1500.

Pretty ironic. I was ready to flip my 360 over Virtua Fighter 5 and Devil May Cry 4, but they went mutli, so 360 became my main machine and still is.

I will still never understand to this day how VO:OT, Rez, Ikaruga, and Soul Calibur made their way exclusively to Xbox Live Arcade. Those are, in order, my 4 favorite Dreamcast games of all time. That, to this day, blows my mind.

I don't know where I'd rank the 360 just yet. It's too young. But it's definitely up there.

I got mine at the release date of Gears (which was also the reason I got the system) with Dead Or Alive 4, Prey, Condemned, Call of Duty 2 and of course the Limited Edition of Gears - I still remember the OMFG's when I saw Gears running at 1080i on my 32" HD CRT set.

360 has some of my favorite games this gen (Halo 3, Bioshock, Crackdown. Dead Rising, e.t.c.), brought some really cool ideas into the consoles such as achievements and XBLA and was also the reason I got hooked into online gaming...spent most of my gaming time by far this gen on 360 and owning more than 80 games - definitely my favorite system this gen.

360 has some great exclusives, had much fun with EDF 2017 and Dead Rising. Was a bumpy road with 2 deaths but here's to many more years to come.

You started with an HD CRT too. I remember the most impressive thing about Gears to me was that cut scene when they were in the helicopter. I just remember being in shock over that. Like, that Soul Calibur 1 in 1999 on Dreamcast level shock.

Any great console always has that shock moment for me.

5 games on that list weren't sequels. And Need For Speed Shift is a completely different game from the rest of the games in the series.

Dirt 2 is ridiculous fun with the 360's steering wheel.

And Forza 3 is the best racing game I've ever played. How much of it have you played since you got rid of your 360 6 months ago?

It's among my worst systems ever list but it's different in the fact that it isn't because of the games. I hope their next system is far more reliable and quiet.

Yeah I had a Philips HD CRT back then and when I saw the first level of Gears I was like OMFG! I couldn't believe the IQ and the quality of the graphics as I have only seen PS2, GC and XBOX games on that TV...definitely a DC SC level shock -
btw SC at 480p via VGA still looks amazing.
:D

I just love my 360, so many great memories and 2010 looks very promising.

I'm probably like most people here; I love the counsel and am impressed with the advances in the technology and in the online play and community.

BUT I am disappointed in the lack of reliability of the hardware. Unfortunately this may also be the first generation that a developer can release an unfinished game and just release a patch; but that's not exclusive to the XBOX 360.

Xbox 360 changed the game forever, and it's absolutely one of my favorite consoles ever.

The whole Xbox Live experience, with all its demos and services has completely transformed the way I play games. It's definitely leading this medium in just the place it needs to go.

My first games were Kameo, Call of Duty 2, and Ridge Racer 6, with Dead Rising and King Kong not far behind. The system's come a long, long way since then, and it's still delivering graphics and gameplay that impress me to this day.

Keep it up, Tree Sitty!

After some accounting...

I own 30 XBOX 360 games and about 7 Arcade games, add to that the DLC to games like Halo, COD, Gears.. etc...

And I buy most games full price. I am on my third Xbox 360. I play in a EDTV or my Samsung SyncMaster 204B. I own three controllers, two memory units, one wireless headset, one camera, one SFIV TE stick.

Fuck yeah best console ever. 2010 should be the greatest

For me, it beats the SNES and DC as may favourite console of all time.

Im not going to make a list, but XBL is one reason. Its set how online should be done on consoles, and it continues to get more incredible as the years go on.

NetFlix, Sky, Last.FM MS are not only leading the way, they are demonstrating forward thinking the others lack. Now with Natal, the 360 has so much more to offer.

Thanks MS, and happy birthday 360!

I have no desire to further shit up the thread with opinion comparisons, except to say that as a PC owner, only two of the games you mentioned weren't sequels to me, and one of those was not received at all well by the popular press. Also, I tried the demo for NFS:S, messed around with the assists etc., basically hated it instantly.

Happy birthday you beautiful white beast.

I'm going to buy my dude a lightsaber to balance it out.

After having no interest in the original Xbox at all, I bought a 360 at launch because it was the first HD console and the first of the generation, and I've had a great time with it. Definitely one of my favorite consoles ever.

I got my console from Walmart.com on launch day, along with some forced accessories (I pre-ordered from them in September or so) that I was actually able to return for cash at a B&M store. I bought PDZ, Condemned, COD2, Kameo and PGR3 — all of them were decent (although I never bothered with PDZ's SP), and Condemned and PGR3 remain two of my favorite games for the console. Not a bad launch line-up, all-in-all.

Also, I'm not sure if anyone remembers this thread I created: Walmart.com: 360 in stock, NO BUNDLES

I noticed a few days before launch on my order status page that the 360 was listed separately (no longer in a bundle), and it turned out that it could be ordered without any additional crap — which was an impossibly rare discovery at that time. Tons of GAFers got 360s via Walmart, but not before some ridiculous shipping goof-ups on Walmart's part. Hilarity ensues, with a happy ending for (nearly) all.

A great machine, that brought us online gaming on consoles, done properly. Notice i said 'console' before any PC zealot chimes in with their opinions.

I just checked my games and i have a total of 58 retail games 39 Arcade games and 14 bits of DLC for various games that's quite a haul more than i have for any of my older systems and shows the quality of gaming experiences on the machine.

I don't see how being charged for a matchmaking service to play games that mostly don't have dedicated servers as being "done properly".

Well that's good for you,i don't mind paying a pittance for the service. :p

You know, at this point, who's 360 is actually 4 years old? (Who still has their launch 360, working)
I do. Hasn't even been refurbed, it's a legit, jet engine decibel-inducing, 4 year old 360. Bought it off someone who I knew bought it at launch, but hadn't used it much. Probably won't last long, but there you go. It was a gift for my siblings who are still living with my parents.

I've personally gone through four of them, and my current one is about a year old. Still, despite reliability issues, it's the console I've most enjoyed since the SNES.

I did the same. 19 hours in the freezing cold :lol

Until like hour 15 I wasn't even planning on getting one, I was just there with four or five friends who were buying. I didn't have the cash, but I figured it would be something to experience. Then three hours before Best Buy opened, my little brother pulled up next to me in his friend's car and handed me $400. He had managed to nag my family and his friends enough to get that much money. I thought it was a joke at first, because we'd agreed earlier to save up for a few weeks and then split the cost. It worked out in the end, and I had a $400 console with one game: Hexic HD :lol

Couldn't afford another for two months after paying back everyone who pitched in.

My favourite console since Super Nintendo. PS3 has been slowly growing on me, and I've been enjoying it as well, but nothing beats Xbox Live. Nothing. Now I'm playing Modern Warfare 2 with about 6-7 friends online every single night, and it's both a blast and a reminder of our Halo 3 -days.

Xbox 360 has never RROD'd on me, either, although I did sell my launch console and bought an Elite about a year and a half ago.

Xbox 360, you rock.

Hot damn, has it been that long? It's interesting to see that some people have 4-year-old systems that actually still work. Proves that not all systems are defective. It does still have a bad reputation though, despite great games and services. Haven't gotten around to buying one myself because I'm still afraid of systems breaking on me. Not trolling or anything, just, I wouldn't stand the hassle if it did break.

It's too bad it had such faulty reliability. Other than that, it really is one of the greatest consoles ever. I am on my 2nd Xbox 360, and I still prefer it over PS3, which has becoming increasingly appealing as each day passes. It is also too bad it is so damn ugly.

I am hoping that the new Xbox 360 version (speculated), with Natal, solves both of these problems....

I forgot about that fucking Every 10 Minutes contest Pepsi did... I recall quite a few GAFers winning 360s thanks to it. I bought so much Pepsi that summer/fall — never again.

In Canada it was Win every hour. I won a console on October 8th... man it was good times I did not buy a single bottle of pepsi product. I just filled some useless shitty surveys. I was really laughing my ass off at my friends who could not find a 360 in store and then mine broke on December 23, 2005
