They were all dead. The final gunshot was an exclamation mark...

I don't understand the notion that the first two games are better than the third.

I mean yes, the big white elephant of unskippable cut scenes aside, Max Payne 3 is just leagues ahead of the other two from a mechanical and gameplay standpoint. It's just not even close. The original two games feel archaic by comparison.

Not bad per se, just old hat.
It's almost as if people liked the original games for more than just the gameplay.

I don't know man, before your post there's a whole thread of people saying how much Max Payne stories touched them, quoting dozens of lines, remembering anecdotes. There are even some who said they cried. This terrible writer must have done something right.

Also I loved Alan Wake, damn my low quality tastes !

Doesn't this reinforce what I was saying? I doubt so many people are feeling touched by an "intentionally corny" story. It's obvious they took it seriously (as it was meant to be). Otherwise, they would be talking about how funny it was.

Rockstar/Remedy should at least patch in widescreen resolutions support into the first two titles. That would be enough to keep them relevant for a decade more at least.

First max payne was terrible. Second was super enjoyable and great. Have not played third. Poets of the fall is super. Have to listen some now.
It wasn't terrible, it was different, more action oriented with less cutscenes, more serious in its tone. You should play the third one, it's different too -- action is good but the plot and writing are bad.

I call "Death of the Author": Doesn't matter what was intended, the story touched people, so Lake did something right.

I always have a replay of MP2 around this time of year. Fired it up yesterday, its still so good. And god damn for a 10 year old game it looks phenomenal, and native support for resolutions like 2560x1600, back in 2003 a res that big was inconceivable. Remedy

Fuck MP3 tho, complete bag of shit that doesnt even deserve to be mentioned alongside the originals.

EDIT

There is a widescreen fix available

Well, they are archaic in game terms. Doesn't mean they can't be better games as a product of their time. It was one of the first third person shooters to get it right control wise, and it was a pretty bold step story wise as well.

The third one was a really good game, it's just a shame it's shoved behind so much crap. The style used in the cutscenes was so overdone it felt like some sort of parody.

I played the first one for the first time this year and can confirm that it holds up pretty well. I didn't know 2 was also highly praised, so I guess I'll have to get round to that too.

Glad to see Max is getting the love he deserves.
I'll be honest, the first isn't the greatest example of fine writing (I found by the end of the game, the monologues started to get a little grating), but I think it really was part of the charm.
Say what you will about Remedy's games, their ability to build a world with a coherent feel and atmosphere is just insane.
Sidenote, Alan Wake, for how bad the writing and how large the plot holes can get, is one of my favourite games of this gen.
I just started MP 2 and just...wow. Really impressed.

I wasn't saying "touched" in a strict "deeply emotional" sense. A lot of people, me included, just found the stories cool ! Max Payne 1 was more witty whereas MP 2 had a slightly more melancholic, serious tone, but I don't think for one second that Remedy was trying to make a 100% serious film noir story in both cases. A lot of scenes, including the one where Max breaks the 4th wall in the first game (a lot of people spoke about it in this very thread), show that the games are very much self-aware.

I'm not saying you're inherently wrong in your view, but if you don't see or consider that self-awareness, of course you won't appreciate the games as much as the people who do, and you'll miss a big part of the reason why I think Sam Lake is a good video game writer, hell a good writer plain and simple. I mean just look what happened when they tried to adapt the franchise to the "superior" film medium...

It's almost like I mentioned that I was referring specifically to gameplay and mechanics.

@screamingmeat - I'd forgotten all about MP2 rewarding you with more and slower bullet time. I guess I can see why that's appealing!

I wanted more of Mona Sax in MP3. Outside of the one passing reference, I felt like she'd been misconstrued as a mistake of Max's past. I never felt that, and I loved MP2 the best!

Revisit the games so very often. Lovelovelove.
MP3 was lacking a real femme fatale. Or anyone that got closer to Max than "hey, we're buddies" for that matter.

You guys and your soundtracks, you are making me want to play Max Payne. I missed it when it first come out and I'm really not an (F)TPS person.

it's my go to title whenever the missus is watching some Great British Bake-Off shit and I can't get on the 360. :)

Don't be knocking the bake off, son. That there is some awesome shit.

Max Payne is a fantastic series of titles, sure the 3rd one is a bit of a let down story wise, but I found its gun-play most satisfying.

Frankly, as a massive fan of the series I found MP3 to be pretty bad on every level. Not just because of them ruining Max as a character and the game feeling absolutely joyless and lacking the amazing atmosphere of the first 2 games.

I couldn't disagree more about MP3 having the best mechanics. MP2 has tighter controls, much more fluid flow to it, deeper bullet time system and no half baked tedious mechanics such as the last man stading which was a horrible addition to the series. MP2 also had better level design and more varied encounters.

Pretty much the only thing MP3 has going for it is the physics engine and I don't know if I'd even count that as a plus consider how sluggish it made the controls feel.

Would have expected a bit more from Rockstar considering the game was in development for ages with a team several times the size of Remedy and came out about 8 or 9 years after MP2.

That animation priority! It made a real mess of things whenever it took Max a full 5 seconds to get back to his feet.

No love for the Kung Fu Mod, then?

YOU SHUT YOAR MOUF

Didn't stop Max from shooting 360 degrees as he got back up though, so it wasn't really an issue. If you make a move in MP3 you have to commit to it... just like the much lauded Dark Souls!

I enjoyed the gunplay in MP3 but felt the level design got in the way of enjoying said gunplay. MP2 is still the most enjoyable of the 3 to go back and play, for me at least.

Easily the best third person shooter franchise. MP3 was great, too. no other shooter this gen felt so good.
but MP2 was probably my favourite, the slightly exagerrated ragdoll physics really did it for me back then. I also loved Max' Bruce Campbell look. I never quite got into the whole south american vibe of MP3, sadly.

I'll make myself unpopular though when I admit that I found the writing pretty silly, even in MP1 and 2, or especially in them? but then again, I dont care much about stories in videogames.

That's true, I was probably just bad at shoot-dodging (meaning I ended up bouncing off a lot of walls) still thought the game was fun though.

I felt it every time I smacked him into a wall.

The physics are brilliant, though. I love it when you land on your back on a desk in Branco HQ and still manage to take a mook down; kind of a "Move it, Trinity!" moment for me :)

i'm playing max payne 3 at the moment, which is my first taste of the series, and really enjoying it. would like to dig more into it afterwards, but should i go back to the first or just play max payne 2 (which people here seem to rave about :D)?

DO THEM ALL!

Go back to the original and then play 2. Mechanically inferior to 2 and 3, but it's still quite fun and experiencing that story for the first time is a blast.

One of my favorite franchises, if not the one. Every title is excellent in its own way, and I really like the writing in all 3 games.

The burning restaurant level in MP1 is one of my favorite levels ever.

Max Payne 2 made me a severe Poets of the Fall fan.

Loved that Remedy brought them back for Alan Wake. Hopefully they'll be a part of Quantum Break as well.

Also, does anyone remember the AW manuscript pages called "Sudden Stop"? Seemingly Remedy's way of writing/killing off and saying goodbye to Max after selling the rights to R*. McCaffery is even reading the dialogue. It's brilliant and beautiful.
