Depends on the body type really, for me a skinny tie looks best because it complements my face and features the most. For others, they can really rock the thicker tie look well.

Personal preference though is in between skinny and thick, so it doesn't look like you're just wearing a strip, but it's not quite the same width on a standard tie. Those can be tricky to find at times though

Just regular sized. I wore skinny ties when they were cool like a decade ago. I would never wear a thick tie. I'm too... skinny.

I feel like the second tie is what's "in" right now.

Skinny is very mod. Suitable for date night if you are of a certain style. Fat tie always a safe work choice.

Anything that is the "new hotness" is usually a bad idea. There was a time when Parachute Pants and Shoulder Pads were the new hotness. People who wear clothes that fit and colors the compliment their complexion will always look good, no matter what stupid trends are going around.

Edit : To be fair, the thickness of ties is one of the least offensive trends going around. Either can be flattering with the right outfit. Also, the Beatles wore skinny ties. #TeamAllTiesAreGreat
