Things you DON'T like about GTA IV

Alright.
So outside of the very first Grand Theft Auto on PS2 I have never beaten or played any of the other games the just bored the fu@#$ out of me.

I picked this one up because of the hype.
And I absolutely love it. But it took me a while to love it the first 5 hours with the controls were definitely more of a hate affair than anything else. But now that I have gotten them down I think the game is phenomenal for all the small things.

The city can look pretty mundane or absolutely gorgeous and when it looks gorgeous I just want to sit and stare at the skyline and the reflections on the water and some random guy walking down the street talking on his cell phone obviously very upset over being broken up with and then some chick looking at her watch and screaming OH NO I AM LATE! At those moments I just revel in the game its so amazing. However, being a complaint thread there are still a laundry list of things that annoy the ever loving SH!T out of me:

I am sure these have been mentioned but:

FIGHTING - is a absolute joke thank god you get a gun pretty damn quick because the thing is the most clumsy piece of code I have ever dealt with and has on more than one occasion almost resulted in me smashing my controller.

DYING IN MISSION
- I get that when I die in a mission I obviously have to start it over but is it really necessary for me to wait for the damn hospital cut-scene than get my phone out hit try again. Then have to drive all the Fu@#$ back over to where the mission is and get set-up it can be a extra 10 min each time you die and on some of the hard missions thats a absolute nightmare.

There are more but those are the biggest.

...you can actually skip it by immediately hitting X/A ...I just reload the prior autosave and take a Taxi back to the missions anyways...saves time and money

My only peeves right now are:

- Auto Centering Camera: ...this shit is such a headache when indoors....especially in a multifloored building. At least give us the option to turn it off or reduce the time it takes for it to intiate a recenter =/
...in it's defense though, it does make sense when your sprinting

- Having to hold a button to jog/run: ...why couldn't they have used the Bully approaching of just having it sprint??? ...holding the analog all the way forward SHOULD initiate the run, not a button press

- Too much unused analog range in the right trigger: ...having to hold the trigger ALL THE WAY down is fucking annoying to register a shot, as is having to almost hold it all the way down just for your car to at least start to accelerate. I basically permentely switch to "classic" controls to by pass this issue

- Framerate (PS3 version): ...self explanatory

...that's all I got really as far as fundemental gameplay mechanic critisicms
Game is still a 10/10 for me :D

Oh god I'm at 25% iirc and the game is so. fucking. boring. The same crap again and again and again. Drive there kill that guy. Follow that guy and don't let him notice you. Then kill him. IN EVERY GODDAMN GTA THE EXACT SAME GODDAMN GAMEPLAY.

Im in the exact same position. 25% (14 hours) through, and I'm getting a pretty clear picture of how the latter 75% will be. I'll push a little further to see if there are any gameplay/plot twists waiting for me, but i doubt it'll meet even my currently low expectations.

Beat it last night just in time for my eBay auction to end.

I wouldn't say I hated the experience, but I didn't love it either. There were only three memorable missions in the entire game:

Three Leaf Clover
Tunnel of Death
Out of Commission

Every thing else was a minor variation of the same freaking pattern: drive somewhere/chase someone; protect/kill them; escape the fuzz.

Not having mid-mission check points lead to more muttered profanity than I care to admit. The problem is that while in most difficult games, when I fail, it's usually because I screwed up, and victory comes with mastery. In this game, because there is just so much random crap that happens, I never feel like I mastered a difficult mission, but escaped failure, if that makes any sense. One is followed by a genuine sense of accomplishment, the other a sense of relief.

Seriously, I'm relieved the game is over, and I'm actually looking forward to never touching it again.

Agree with all the complaints in this thread. But especially with the tank Niko.

I know it may be a bit over the top for this game, but what if Niko controlled like Dante in DMC, how freaking cool would that be. I mean he can turn on a penny, and roll away from danger when he needs it, close combat would have been a dream (just use the gilgamesh weapon, and a couple of the swordmoves from the swordmaster style and then add a button to cover and it would have been perfect. Thoughts?

Lots of minor annoyances such as GPS not being accurate. I once had LJ on the GPS but showed up nowhere when I pulled up the map.

I failed the
truck
mission with
Packie
four times b/c everytime I locked on a goon and threw a grenade below , it would one bounce next to the
truck
and explode it instead.

Also, why don't the goons show up on the GPS in later missions? It's so annyoing when you think you've finished all and one is just standing in the corner (sleeping) and ends up killing you

It's very easy to miss the the on screen text in the heat of battle such as 'target is fleeing'

...

very, very well put.

OK, after done some of the side missions I finally finish the game last weekend. Like my previous post I found more things frustrating in GTA4.

First off, the last mission! What's up with that? I've done both ending missions. The one where you need to kill Dimitri really sucks (when you decide to take the money). Everytime you fail to catch the chopper, YOU HAVE TO START ALL OVER! What's up with that? That really sucks R*!!!

Secondly, the ending where Kate died really didn't affect me at all. It feels hollow. The ending where Roman died however, was really powerful, it's really one of the best emotional ending I've ever seen in a videogame.

Third, did I mention riding motorcycles? Even the Sanchez sucks! No matter how you play it, camera behind Niko or 1st person view, it still suck!

Fourth, what am I suppose to do with 1.1m of Liberty City currency? I can't do anything with it... Well except guns & ammo (even that I got the discounted price from Little Jacob).

All in all, it's been a great experience. I kept my save game where Roman died & will continue to play the game for the 100% score.

Hmm. I'm still not sure about GTAIV. I mean, it's still fun to fuck around and cause chaos, but it's just a bit....boring. There is this massive fucking ornate city here that looks sensational, but what can we do in it? If we could somehow mash all the random and more importantly VARIED elements of San Andreas in with the graphics and (slightly) improved controls of GTAIV, we would have a 10/10 game. As it stands, I just don't know. Maybe 8/10.

archaic mission structure....having to repeat all the boring missions from the beginning when you die....most missions ending in car chases...the police

GTA as always been games that I never finish, I get bored as its just the same over and over but I do like GTA when I dont have nothing else to do.

this is how I play GTA:

I steal a car drive fast and crash and kill other people and try to fly as high and long as I can.

I use cheats to unlock all wepons and blast everything until I get a 5 star wanted level and see what happens, I always try to steal the cops and special forces cars just to see how fast they are and then I kill some more.

thats it... all I do and its fun haha sometimes I also do some missions but mostly I just drive around and kill other people.

GTA4 is good no doubt about it but its GTA3 in a nicer package

what I dont like is when I die and have to wait for it to load only to see that I have to do everything all over again...

I pretty much had enough of the game now and I will be trading it in for Heavenly Sword & Ninja Gaiden

The part that pissed me off to the CORE is the part where you need to rescue Roman from the warehouse. Two things that fucked me over 1) The cover system when you get near the roof is FUCKED. There is someone on the roof who shoots are you and you cant properly take cover and then you get "stuck" like glue on the weird vent things then killed. Secondly is the enemies who spawn behind you when you, randomly I had a dude run up behind me AFTER I cleared the whole place, and he killed me with a shot gun because he was too close and I kept hitting him rather than shooting him

Other than that it's as everyone said, the damn check points on long missions, for example the one with Packie and the van. I mean i cleared the first wave of people, then died when i fell off the roof, but I had to start ALL over again with the drive etc, only to see more enemies.

Then it's the general repetitiveness of the missions: kill this guy, but you need to chase him, don't lose him other wise you need to start ALL over again, not even able to skip the hospital -> destination part, and just arrive to the pre-chase section. Or how about the jobs for Little Jacob..Get the car > deliver the drugs > kill enemies > escape. One mission I thought wtf @ was the one for Mallorie when you had to deliver the dead bodies to the doctor in the alley. I mean wtf, nothing else happened! Just a drive across town and a shitty cut scene...wow (or was there more, as I havent gone further than resucing Roman)

And lol yeah, Nico the tank. Coming out of the safe house in Bohan, who else keeps walking straight into those cabinets? The controls for him are horrid. As well as the gun controls, good idea but needed more tuning. If I target someone and they die THEN AUTOMATICALLY RELEASE THE TARGET FROM THEM, man...

What else...Oh, and people calling all the time. yeah you can hit O, but then the friend thingy goes down. And it's fucking annoying to make a date, then recall them to cancel plns, too tedious. But you know, this is why I am selling the game, it didn't bond well enough with me and I am no a huge fan of GTA, but I tried..I still have the save file so I will play it with my fiancee sometime, maybe it will make it more fun. But anyways, it was hold over till June 12th anyway :D

edit* LAST one, does anyone notice when you are driving on bridges cars just randomly change lanes and crash into each other for no reason? They just dart into the other lane and cause accidents..and it's always when you are right behind them

I noticed it also. It does happen all over, not only on bridges. Really sucks when you're riding at full speed and suddenly a car changes lane... Arghh

Especially with the potential of a cover system and silencer, stealth missions could have been a logical step. A step they kinda took in GTA: SA with robbery missions but just dropped all together. When you consider the scale of the city and possiblities of robbing places from multiple angles (front door, rear, fire escape, from roof top), it seems they were just pressed for time and launching this in Winter 08 could have added some polish.

That wasn't dropped in SA; breaking into Area 69, stealing the Jump Jet, getting Mad Dogg's rhyme book - they were all about stealth.

I kind of liked it, but I prefer GTA 4's cover and mayhem that comes from that. Especially lobbing a grenade down a corridor :)

God the multiplayer is killing me. How in the hell could they not make a pregame lobby? I am so sick of loading the stupid party mode world! Just load me into a quick menu with my teammates and let us choose the next game type (hello HALO or ShadowRun). Half the time we get kicked and end up in our own party mode worlds or just thrown back into single player. If you quit midgame then the whole process starts over. LOADING LOADING LOADING.

Think there is any chance they would patch this to make it more streamlined?

At this point I'll obviously be repeating things that have already been repeated, but I'm putting it here anyway.

Overall:

No sense of improving as the game goes on. You get more money but don't do anything with it. You get new pads but they're the same as the old ones (and why are they always upstairs?!). Getting stuff and upgrading (even if, for the sake of realism, it isn't your character actually "leveling up") is a huge appeal of games but is completely lacking here.

Too many cops. I think they could reduce the number of cops by a full third and the game would be the better for it. All the cops -- and their increased effectiveness -- significantly cut down on the random fun factor of the game.

Lack of freedom. How many missions start with you arriving at a place only to watch a cutscene of Niko telling the target that he's going to die, thus giving him a chance to run? Why does my car disappear from blocking the target's getaway car? Why can't I kill Packie in the mission where I'm supposed to protect him? Ok, you wrote a lot of story for him, but give me a really free city and choices. This would be hard to implement across the entire game (though Oblivion does it with a far greater number of important characters), but I think it would be extremely worthwhile.

Lack of interactivity. The amazing city (and it truly is astounding) might as well be a painting. I don't know what the solution would be for this (the job of making the whole city really interactive would be ridiculous), but as long as it continues, the cities are always going to seem this way. This approach worked last-gen because it was a new experience in itself. But today's large-scope games are, more and more, offering levels of choice and interactivity that far surpass anything that any GTA game has ever done. As a result, GTA 4 seems somewhat antiquated.

Too many characters introduced haphazardly. This is self-explanatory. You care about the ones at the start, and might start to care about the later ones, but you don't because they're not handled nearly as well.

Focus on more obvious humor is detrimental.

I'm sure I'm the only one, but the radio I liked best was the cheesy pop in GTA3. Loved it. Thought it was hilarious. There's about 3 songs like this in the game, along with 5 or 6 fucking channels of hip hop and its variants.

Gameplay:

Lack of checkpoints. At least give us a checkpoint at the real start of the mission. Driving repeatedly to get to the fun part is...well, not fun.

What's the solution for the banal mission structure? I have no idea, but I hope they find one. This one's getting old, fast.

Everyone raves about the Three Leaf Clover mission, and the idea is certainly fun. But all the interesting stuff in that mission is handled in a cutscene, with the same old gameplay being the only thing that you actually play.

Popping in and out of cover is too slow, and the fact that it changes the location of your reticule is annoying. Also, coming out of cover needs to be easier and more consistent.

I'd say that whoever thought of making invincible enemies (so you could watch the cool scripted events) should be shot, but it probably wouldn't affect him. Terrible idea.

Too many slow animations. I've died so many times because of the animations it's ridiculous.

The "suddenly swerve into the player's motorcycle" AI is still present, much to no one's amusement.

Having cops around in any mission where you have to fire a weapon is...fucking-A man, just no. No cops should even be in the game at that point. Let me do the mission.

Are the (extremely limited selection of) clothes supposed to look stupid?

Graphics:

I have no problem with them during gameplay, but during cutscenes the character models and animation aren't up to snuff. Great job on the facial expressions but the rest doesn't really work. You can see that they tried, but it's just not enough.

There's always going to be pop-up, but there's too much, too close to be really acceptable.

I'm sure the explosions are all identical. :(

I am 50 hours in, 61 missions completed. I think I am at the point where the game wont magically change on me. The missions are a huge let down on this game, it a step back from SA. So much about this game is a step back from SA. Still an excellent game, not the best GTA at all.

The post above me nails a lot of points as well.

I can understand those issues, but man, I loved that mission.

I think this one takes the cake for the worst 3D GTA yet. Seriously. Why? Because as countless others have said before, there's NOTHING to do after you complete the game. The game does not reward you enough for side-missions (well actually they don't reward you at all, except for gamerscore. Where's my armor in the apartment? Where's my increased sprint time? My increased health points? Rare cars?), and you can't spend the money you've earned during the game, except in ammo. I want my goddamn manor with helicopters and boats! All this in the name of "realism". Look, realism is great, but there's a fine line between realism and boredom for video games IMO.

The story is great IMO, but the missions are still quite repetitive. Also, ugh framerate. I've had the problem of parked cars disappearing as well (My Infernus...gone :( ). The cover system is pretty bad, sometimes Niko won't shoot, sometimes he will, and the time the camera takes to adjust after you take cover, it feels like I can't aim for 5 seconds after taking cover. What the hell?

And the missions. GIVE THEM CHECKPOINTS for God's sake.

It's still a good game though. It's still fun to race around and kill people for nothing. I'd give it about 8.5/10, but nowhere close to 10/10.

I love GTA3, but come on.
This is exactly what GTA4 is, then expansion will come out and they will be parallel to Vice city and San Andreas. If they had everything from the San Andreas, there would be nothing to look forward to.

- Inventory screen. It's about time R*. I want an inventory screen where I can check what shit I'm carrying and have some limitations on how many guns I have. Pulling RPG's out of my ass isn't cutting it anymore. I want the guns I have on me to be viewable on the character model and any large ones should be carried in a duffel bag. Niko can throw it in the trunk when he's driving.

- Better movement control. tapping X to do some stupid leap , or uninterruptable climbing animations where I'll just jump off a building is lame. Take a hint from AssCreed and make it so when I hold X I'll automatically climb over obstacles smoothly. I want to be able to slide across car hoods and vault over fences. The movement control hasn't evolved and is clunky as ever.

- Weapons and items. More. Two melee weapons? Who the hell is Rockstar trying to kid here? A bat and a knife? C'mon now! Not only that, but half the weapons are just superior versions of the others. No disadvantage to having the newer one. I want some contrast, as well as more options in the first place. How about a silencer, or grenade attachments? Also, there should be other items like tasers, binoculars, portable health kits, and more clothing.

- Character progression. You feel the exact same as you did at the beginning than you do near the end, aside from newer guns and more money (almost pointless might I add) How about some skill progression in gun types for better aiming/faster reloading? The more you run the faster you get? More health eventually? Higher strength for melee combat? Etc. Etc. We don't need SA's system in full swing again, but give us something.

Oh lord, how I would have loved to have a silenced pistol when pigeon hunting. It was frustrating to have to outrun the cops when shooting down a pigeon :(

Anyways, I still love the game to death, got my 200th pigeon last night :D

If they are going to up the realism of everything else why make an exception for the weapons. I think it would be badass carrying around a case or bag. You would always have a couple weapons on your person, but RPG's and Sniper Rifes would have to be carried.

For the part in the roof, I ran up to the vents and manually aimed up after I hit cover. It was a weird angle, but it worked. Then you take out the guy at the door where Roman is, then you attack the guys behind the other vents. Seemed to work every time. By the second try, I knew where the enemies were coming from. I never experienced a random spawn.

The part that pissed me off was that I rescued Roman, ran down the stairs, got in the truck, then blew up when I didn't realize the road ahead is littered with propane tanks for no obvious reason. So yeah, the next time I rescued Roman, you better believe we ignored the truck and walked out to the streets, then jacked a car to take him home. :lol

It's pretty obvious that this is Rockstar North's first big online game. The whole multiplayer implementation is a mess:
No proper menus, needless loading times,
bad netcode with people dropping all the time,
matchmaking that allows the host to change all the settings to whatever he likes, making it impossible to find a game with the settings you want (fucking autoaim),
worse lag than any other 360 game I played and the framerate is even worse than in sp.
I can't think of any other game with a good sp and such a badly coded multiplayer.

But yeah, I'd love to have the next one back in London, it'd make the streets incredibly interesting - plus there could be a whole range of different characters.

Exactly this. It's fine to make things a little more realistic, such as the cars have a better sense of weight about them. But GTA games should never be about realism. Ever. Honestly, it just wouldn't be as fun.

Haven't had an issue with dropped games *knock on wood* but the online infrastructure is terrible. I don't understand why there isn't a server list. It's a pain having to continually jump in and out of games in order to find one where there's enough people and auto aim is off. Even then, far too often, the host becomes AFK in a large match which means the match never starts.

Sorry to repeat myself, but seriously, if you haven't tried playing a long session of "Maifya Work" with some friends, you're missing out.

Its basically a speed-run of GTA4 in a nut-shell, with every player simultaneously being offered the full staple of GTA4 missions: go here, kill X, escort X, steal car at X, etc. etc.

Its absolute chaos when everybody is trying to achieve the same objectives.

Its casual in the sense that you can always pick which missions you want to win, which ones you want to spoil, and which ones you want to ignore to be in a better position for the next mission.

Restrict the game to one borough, turn on cops and power weapons and its a fucking blast, even if you're just messing around.

Multiplayer GTA4 is borked in a lot of ways, but Mafiya Work is worth the trouble IMO.

The one thing I don't like about this game is that its the same exact thing. A few game play advancements and a major graphics overhaul, with the inclusion of a great story, but my no means award winning, doesn't necessarily warrant a perfect score, or the title "Greatest game since Ocarina of Time". The game is really great, maybe a 9.5+ out of 10, but the repetitive factor should really be considered in this one. This game does NOTHING revolutionary, and is just a very over-hyped game from a great series, IMO at least.

I get the feeling that reviewers are scared of Sam Houser....

Excellent game, easily my favourite of the past couple of years. Barely touched the MP, about 75% done the SP.

I'm sure it's been mentioned to death, and I refuse to scan more than a couple pages of this thread, but the system for changing clothes STILL FUCKING SUCKS. It's actually WORSE than in previous games, which just astonishes me. Takes agonizing seconds to switch between outfits, half the time you can't tell what the fuck you're looking at and there is *no on screen labels or text to tell you what you're trying on* and if you get it wrong your date bitches about your cheap jeans. WELL I'M SORRY I THOUGHT THESE *WERE* THE MODO JEANS YOUR MATERIALISTIC DEAD SOUL SO LOVES YOU GODDAMN COCK TEASE.

And sweet merciful zeus twice I had to "suit up" for missions and went through all the trouble to do it only to be told that I wasn't dressed up enough. I have like every pair of shoes available in the game, is it my fault half of them look the fucking same so I picked the too-casual black shoes by mistake? And the meager selection of clothing was also disappointing. In all GTA's I've liked to find a nice casual suit and rob and murder my way through the game with a modicum of style but I refuse to wear the ugly jackets on the "nice" suits due to the way it makes Niko look like he has a fucking pot belly. Having him alternate between the one acceptable sweater and the one good casual double breasted jacket suit is a joke compared to the style CJ could rock.

There were a few really good chase missions, but yeah there were too many and a few of them just sucked. I found the "slow speed" missions were great, like the one that had you following through a residential neighborhood across lawns, through fences and back alleys and so on. The fast ones can be incredibly frustrating, especially the bike ones when it's so easy for you to clip the curb or anything and go flying out of control. And boat chases are always iffy, one of them had too much scripted chase-scene shit happening and it kept brutally punishing me for daring to try a parallel route. And any escort vehicle mission tends to annoy.

I also didn't like how some chase missions you could end really fast by shooting accurately and disabling/destroying the vehicle but some you just had to follow them to a cut scene before you had a chance to kill the guy. The fact I couldn't tell if it was even possible to shoot out the tires or hit the driver annoyed me as I wasted 200 rounds of SMG ammo. It did feel good to hit a guy with a lucky shot right at the beginning and watch him crumple 10 seconds into a mission though.

Top Bottom
