This Adobe ad is making visiting GAF miserable

I don't know if it's just me getting this ad, but it's this ad right here:

There's a cursor that appears in the ad's "search" box and yanks the web page either to the top or bottom of the webpage when it finally loads in their respective windows. This is on safari on a MacBook Pro if it makes any difference.

Powers that be; make it stahp

make it stahp

I think ads are based on your search history?
I am getting a car ad and I recently visited a few car sites.
Just a guess lol

I keep noticing the sound icon on the browser tab light up when browsing on my PC. These ads are trash and getting intrusive. Honestly they feel like a security risk at this point.

I have relegated my GAF browsing to mobile for now where I don't have to deal with that shit.

I get that how many sugar cubes in stuff ad, that when my cursor stops on top of it the whole page becomes an ad and I need to click to get out of it. Luckly never got the adobe one.

I've got ad blocker disabled on GAF, but sometimes I do get tempted to enable it...
(Pages also load way faster without ads).

Not getting it on Ubuntu/Chromium. Just realized that I'm getting a black bar and "broken" icon on top and bottom, respectively. Not using adblock or anything like that.

Edit: checked Firefox (Ubuntu as well) and I'm not getting any ads there either. I think I do get ads on mobile though I'm not sure.

edit2: wait, now I'm getting some ninja ad.

edit3: now they're gone again. huh.

Ads on GAF suck. I used to have images enabled, but ads made it a pain since you can only expand images once the entire page loads and half the time an ad would keep the page from fully loading.

And I feel like there have been more audio ads recently, which are the bane of the internet.

Yeah, I started getting this after visiting the Adobe stock photos page, and now I'm getting it every other refresh. It's super annoying. I clicked the little blue arrow to report it to Google, but no luck. I'd think at least their process would stop me from seeing it: I figure once someone goes out of their way to report it that's a pretty good sign it's not something they're interested in seeing.

Can't get into GAF mobile
without using adblocker
without having Clash of Clans or Candy Crusher Saga opening up on Android.

:\

That's all ads on mobile for me. Can't start browsing the page before it's fully loaded because the ad will always fuck everything up

Does Gaf host their own ads? I was reading scary statistics about the number of malware infections from legitimate sites that use ad networks. The security expert likened browsing the internet without an ad blocker to having random sex without condoms.

Maybe Trump should buy into some ad networks. Bet the issue would get fixed quickly after that.

I'm assuming this comparison is based on something other than the consequences of these two actions.

I hadn't seen that ad until the very next page load after visiting this thread. Apparently AdSense thought based on my thread viewing history that I was interested in terrible ads!

Ads on GAF are fucking terrible. At the very fucking least make them relevant to gaming.

If you're not getting gaming ads, you don't spend enough time in the gaming side, i can't get rid of this stupid "Avenger" controller ad.

Also a local convinience store ad that informs me i can pay for steam games in their stores...that one was actually useful.

It's pretty much a user right.

I'm almost a 100% sure that admitting to using adblock on NeoGAF is bannable. Just trying to warn the guy.

Also I completely disagree, you circumvent the profit model of these websites when using adblock.

I also I know Evilore is really understanding about annoying ads and constantly works to get them removed.

It doesnt happen to me at least, I literally love my ads they are so simple and not annoying at all.

(Half of them are from the government btw.)

Edit:
Dont be dicks adblock slowly killed some of my favourite websites.

Nobody will come after you for blocking single, annoying ads.

AFAIK, using adblock isn't bannable; flaunting that you do \ trying to convince others to is.

I was getting that Adobe ad last week and it was making my life miserable.

It seems to have been replaced with a T-mobile ad that autoplays video with audio. So now Hotline Bling is making my life miserable. I'm not even in the USA! I have no means of signing up with T-mobile even if the advertising was effective.

Also in recent rotation is a McDonald's ad that covers my entire browser window.

*sigh* I miss when not having Flash installed stopped most of the invasive ads. Fucking HTML5+ECMAscript.

Eh, this is always suggested yet I've never seen a definitive answer from an admin. Last I hear they (obviously) strongly discouraged using Adblock but won't take action because it's near impossible to prove unless a member confesses and is difficult to define as an offence, considering use of Adblock might be out of their control (work etc.).

You may "circumvent the profit model" by using it, but it's still a user right.

Anyway, as an addendum, can we get some confirmation from GAF staff regarding the use of Adblock and any consequences it may cause?

I don't believe it is, at least last time the discussion came up.
I'm not about to stop blocking either, I don't blame the anyone on the site, but there's been enough instances of things going south where I simply don't trust the ads here any longer. I have a ton of places whitelisted, but this always ends up being knocked off that list every couple months unfortunately.

from the 'it's 2016 and I have questions about GAF thread'

Everyone's always really curious about this, and as always the specifics are private information that I'm not going to share. The site's a business, sure, but also a passion. I've stuck with a minimal aesthetic and a focus on user experience and have kept the ad quality as high and unobtrusive as is humanly possible, whether the site was even profitable at any given time or not, because what mattered first was keeping the thing good, after all the bullshit that came before with the struggles of keeping the community intact and on functional hardware prior to my explicit ownership and reimagining/relaunch of the community independently in 2004 (thanks to ~$2000 in seed money generously donated without any strings attached by the tiny contingent of kind former members of the previous iteration that self-destructed at the time). With a little digging through interviews that touch upon the financial side you'll understand to what extent I'm a stubborn asshole about this thing and how little I ultimately care about personal financial security on my end, through the ups and the downs alike. I grew up in poverty, and the site does well now, and I have my fun as a result for the time being, but I'm okay with whatever at the end of the day. If times change or I screw up and it goes poof, it's just an exciting flip of the page to a new chapter, so I don't care much for the buyout offers, as long as I stay vaguely sane in this gig. It's probably a foregone conclusion, though, that sanity has long since passed by, but here I am.

The site is entirely free to use. I don't accept donations because I'd honestly just rather you donated to UNICEF or an equivalent and save some kids' lives, y'know? That'd make me feel better than taking your money, though as business models change and everyone starts to adblock the entire internet it may be begrudgingly necessary some day to branch out in order to keep the gears moving smoothly. Never know for sure. Therefore it's appreciated if you don't adblock, whether you click on ads that interest you or not, since adblocking flat out destroys the business model of free websites and forces them into inferior business models that no one likes, like shitty naggy donation drives, or insta-death pay models, or microtransaction hell. I like free and minimalist. I'm sure you do too.

Just enjoy the site.

So seems like it's fine if you do in terms of not getting banned, but it's a huge dick move. Then again a mod is welcome to chime in, but in many instances people admit to use adblock and it's frowned upon, but they didn't get banned over it

Pretty sure you can stop that specific ad from ever appearing if you click the green triangle in the top right and mess with the options it gives you.

It may not be anymore, I may be completely wrong. I just know it used to be bannable using adblock, this was years ago though.
Edit: Just trying to help out a fellow gaffer
