This deep sea creature is stuff of Cthulu nightmares

Those things are microscopic, aren't they? How'd they get that footage?

Aren't these things basically indestructible? Like they have been frozen in radioactive uranium or some shit and when thawed they are happy as anything.

They can be frozen just above the abzolute zero, then tawed and just brush it off

Can wistand temperatures above 100°C and just say fuck it

Pressures 6 fucking times the ones in the deepest of the oceans and go just "meh"

Ionizing radiation 100's of times as harmful for us humans? They go like anything happen

Survive for years with no food or water, even dehidrated below 3% water and go on in their day

They can survive in the vacuum of space, fuck that, humans

I can't be the only one who sees this and feels like these must itch like hell and it must feel awesome when they gtfo

Maybe. There's probably a couple of nerve endings in each of the holes to figure out if it's still occupied (though I'm not sure what the frog would do if one of its children can't get out), but I doubt it's an itching sensation in the same way that humans and other mammals experience.

When we encounter our first advanced alien species, it's going to be one of the horrors from this thread evolved...and they will be looking to unite with their own kind here.

I can't remember but if we even got that far with a submarine, wouldn't it be crushed because of the pressure? Or am I wrong. This leads me to asking why don't we do now deep sea experiments like they do in space?

I don't know either but how could they be photographed ?
If a submarine is crushed because of pressure, wouldn't a camera be crushed as well ?

What's the name of this fish? Really cool!

Edit: cardinalfish

I just read they are called Ostracods. The cardinal fish are their enemies !
Edit: sorry nope, Ostracods are something else. I don't know, what they have in common is they emit bioluminescence when threatened

Actually, I imagine some poor alien traveler comes to Earth, and they stumble across any one of these things first...

... and they decide to nuke the whole planet from orbit. It's the only way to be safe.

Maybe it's better that we can't find life on other planets. We have nightmare creatures here.
Maybe this is why other intelligent life has been avoiding our planet. We live on a hostile world.
Like the Dark Angels origin world for you Warhammer 40k fans

Those tentacles just keep going...

it's a cradinal fish spitting out an ostracod. ostracods glow, cardinalfish are translucent. having something glowing in your belly ain't good for survival (if you're translucent), as you may imagine - hence the fish gets rid of it's prey before it turns itself into prey.

The little ones are just as freaky.

Well damn.

I hope we're studying them to find out what makes them so resistant to virtually everything deadly.

I think it's a combination of their size and the simplicity of their biology. Like how ants can carry something ten times their body weight, but if they were the size of humans then they wouldn't even be strong enough to stand up straight, due to the square cube law.

I wonder if aquatic life think they're flying. Like, there's shit on the ocean floor that cant swim, so do they think sharks and stuff are flying animals?

It terrifies the shit out of me that we have no idea what is in our oceans. Google needs to figure out a way to map that shit and photograph everything

Deep sea exploration kicks the shit out of outer space. There's actually cool stuff going on in our oceans compared to boring nothingess.

How I wish I'm still alive when technology finally allows up to explore down there without problems.

Huh, I don't know what square cube law is but thanks for the explanation.

This principle states that, as a shape grows in size, its volume grows faster than its surface area. When applied to the real world this principle has many implications which are important in fields ranging from mechanical engineering to biomechanics. It helps explain phenomena including why large mammals like elephants have a harder time cooling themselves than small ones like mice, and why building taller and taller skyscrapers is increasingly difficult.

Tardigrades are .5mm fully grown.

Oh.

That's crazy.

Imagine what's at the bottom of Marianas trench. It's narrow. It's deep. It could be home to something impossibly big.

We have a savior though. The rainbow mantis shrimp shall protect the surface and upper ocean from such foul creatures

Deep sea creatures are incredibly fascinating. We're screwed, but it's fascinating to see them

The shrimp that embraces darkness, so fucking cool.

Now i want to know about that blue-fire spilling fish :B

How are they called again... ?

Sorry to break your dreams:

Sadly, there weren't any kraken lurking in Challenger Deep -- at least not in plain view. But there were other interesting things. The large life forms that Gallo identified fall into three categories: gigantic, nearly invisible, and really weird.

Fuckingbadassmotherfuckers Superior or Tardigrades in short. Also water bears.

ok thanks, I got it now !

A really easy way to see this is with very small numbers.

Start with a 1'x1' cube of something that weights 1pound, has a surface area of 6ft^2
Double its size, its now 2x2. surface area is 24ft^2, weight is now 8 pounds.
tripe its size, now 3x3. surface area is 54ft^2, weight is 27 pounds.

Shit gets crazy real quick when you enlarge stuff like that.
