This is quite possibly the greatest year of gaming

Overrated game

Another game destined to be overrated

New consoles with bad launch lineups

Best year ever.

This has been the worst year of the last 20 from a developer/publisher perspective. It's never been harder to sell a decent video game than it has been in 2013.

Although I supposed Harmonix might argue that 2009 was worse.

Nah, don't think do, but a great year either way.

Predictions (not including Nintendo titles since I no longer have a Wii and have not bought a Wii U).

Classic status

Last of Us
GTA V

Near classic

Bioshock Infinite
Gran Turismo 6

Really good

Watch Dogs
Killzone Shadow Fall

Solid

Battlefield 4
Assassin's Creed Black Flags
Forza 5
DriveClub
Beyond Two Souls

Not even close.
1995 says Hello.

Chrono Trigger
Earthbound
Donkey Kong Country 2
Yoshi's Island
Ogre Battle
Killer Instinct
Mortal Kombat 3
Breath of Fire 2
Secret of Evermore
Romance of the Three Kingdoms 4
Secret of the Stars
NBA Jam: TE
Kirby's Avalanche and Kirby's Dream Course
Mega Man 7 and X2
Ninja Gaiden Trilogy
Castlevania: Dracula X

And all that just on SNES, without even getting into the Genesis, Gameboy, and PC releases that year.

In general though, the mid-90s had some downright amazing years.

Here's the way I see it is. Every three years, video games seem to be better than usual.

2010: Bayonetta, Super Mario Galaxy 2, RDR, ME2, SSF4, DKCR, Vanquish, StarCraft 2, Fallout: New Vegas, Just Cause 2, Guardian of Light

2007: Super Mario Galaxy, Team Fortress 2, Portal, Half-Life 2 Episode 2, Crysis, Call of Duty 4, Pac-Man Championship Edition, Virtua Fighter 4, Bioshock, Metroid Prime 3, Halo 3, God of War 2, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl

2004: Half-Life 2, Halo 2, Metal Gear Solid 3, GTA: San Andreas, Metroid: Zero Mission, Unreal Tournament 2004, Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal, LoZ: the Minish Cap, Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door, Pikmin 2, Outrun2, Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines, Ninja Gaiden, Escape from Butcher Bay

etc etc to 2001, then 1998, you get the picture. I don't know what it is, but that's the way it is.

There's maybe, maybe one game a year I give a 10/10 to, if I'm lucky. 2012 was Mark of the Ninja, 2011 was Rayman Origins, 2010 had two, Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Bayonetta. The Last of Us got a 10 from me. I think it's ND's most accomplished, mature work yet, and the culmination of an entire generation of trying of marrying story and action game design into a compelling package. We still got Kamiya's newest action game building on two of my all-time favorites in Viewtiful Joe and Bayonetta, sequels to two of the best platformers of the past 15 years with Rayman Legends and Donkey Kong Tropic Freeze, and GTAV looks to be the ultimate Rockstar Games creation, like ND's TLOU, taking everything they've learned over the generation from GTA4/MP3/Midnight Club 3/RDR, and putting it in one hugely ambitious game. That could be two, maybe 3 more 10/10s right there. I haven't played that many 10/10 games since 2007.

And there's been some very fine 8-9/10 games I've played this year as well. Metal Gear Rising, Bioshock Infinite, Guacamelee, Runner2, Fire Emblem Awakening, all could fill out a top 10 list near the end of the year. Starting this week there's Mario and Luigi Dream Team, the sequel to what is, IMO, the Nintendo DS' finest hour in Bowser's Inside Story. Next week is Saints Row 4, which looks insane. Then there's a much improved Lords of Shadow sequel on PC, there's the first traditional top-down Zelda by Nintendo EAD in 20 years and a sequel to one of the 16-bit era's most beloved titles, the latest 3D Mario from the creators of SMG1/2, a Metroidvania Batman created by former Retro Studios employees, a new Arkham Batman building on a great formula, Ace Attorney 5 is coming, The Wolf Among Us looks great, Gran Turismo 6 later this year, the most ambitious Pokemon installment in years with X/Y, Battlefield 4 will soon be destroying video cards nation wide, an actual Ratchet and Clank game for the first time since 2009's wonderful Crack in Time...

IDK about greatest year ever, you say shit like that you're just asking for people to disagree with you, but if most of these games live up to what I think they can, I think it will easily continue the pattern of great gaming years every 3 years from '98, '01, '04, '07, and 2010.

Can't remember what games came out when, but looking above, 2004 stands out.

2004: Half-Life 2, Halo 2, Metal Gear Solid 3, GTA: San Andreas

Some classics there.

Just a few small games from 1997...

Final Fantasy VII
Tekken 3
Final Fantasy Tactics
Tomb Raider 2
Gran Turismo

Do i need to say more?

What the hell do you like?? You seem to have this heavy contrarian vibe about you.

Outside of the launch titles, do any next gen games even have release dates to delay?

I mean the launch titles. Anything that comes out in 2013 is practically a launch title. The Wii U ushered in the era of the "launch window" (and, of course, the era of all the good games missing it).

so cross gen games and shit launch titles makes it the best year ever?

2 games doesn't compete with 97, 99, 2001, 2003, etc.

I didn't even mention the other games coming out and those out already. I didn't even bring up the 3ds and Wii U titles.

Compared to the shit that was last year this year is godly.

3DS has been KILLING it this year. And a smattering of good titles on other platforms so far. The Wii U is starting to pick up steam games wise. New hardware is exciting, but there isn't a single launch game on PS4 or XBone that interests me.

On the Wii U front, If TW101, DKC:TF and SM3D World deliver as I expect them to, this will be the best year for Nintendo in a long time. Microsoft and Sony I'm pretty meh on this year.

Ninja Gaiden (Xbox), Final Fantasy XI

04 >>>> 98

1998 has some classics.

Gran Turismo (PAL)
Resident Evil 2
Panzer Dragon Saga
Xenogears
StarCraft
Unreal
Banjo Kazooie
F-Zero X
Metal Gear Solid
Tekken 3 (PAL)
Half Life
Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Thief
Baldur's Gate
Grim Fandango

Oh how i forgot GTA San Andreas and Metal Gear Solid 3. Halo 2 and Half-life 2 I can't comment as I didn't play them much.

Greatest year of gaming.... because of two games? Just because they release in the same year as systems being released doesn't make it noteworthy. Systems always get released.

This year is pretty damn barren when compared to true great years that have had amazing games.

boom.

This was the year i gave in to the PC Master Race and saw the glory of Steam sales, so yea it's been the greatest year personally. Along with the PS3 for console exclusives I have more to play right now than i could possibly play in a year's time.

Funny thing, out of the 350'ish games i now own on Steam, i only have 5 installed.

Looks like I've been turned on to the other GAF tradition as well, buying games and not playing them.

1998, 1999 (this one has over 20 alltime classics in it), 2001, 2004, 2007 were big years, so far it seems like we'll be lucky to get 4good games and maybe one classic in 2013

We gotta ask ourselves how many "Great Games" does it take to replace a legendary status game? Because 98 had both Ocarina of Time and Metal Gear Solid amongst others. I'm thinking you need atleast 5 Great games per Legendary status game. 98 also had a lot of great games as well

Can someone summarize what were released in 98

Metal Gear Solid
Half-Life
Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Gran Turismo
Starcraft
Pokemon Red & Blue
Diablo II
Thief: The Dark Project
Xenogears
Resident Evil 2
Heart of Darkness
Einhander
Klonoa: Door To Phantomile
Skullmonkeys
Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus
Metal Slug 2
Fallout 2
Panzer Dragoon Saga (also the year everyone regrets not buying that import copy of Radiant Silvergun)
Burning Rangers
Parasite Eve
Brave Fencer Musashi
Alundra
Grand Theft Auto
Tomba!
Colony Wars Vengeance
Breath of Fire III
Turok 2
F-Zero X
Baldur's Gate
Spyro the Dragon
Tekken 3
MegaMan Legends
Suikoden II
Grim Fandango

Very memorable year for me..... Backlog: Dead Space (PC) blown away; Tomb Raider (PC) amazing dat hair; Bioshock Infinite (PC) exceeded expectations; Backlog: Super Mario Land 3D (3DS) best Mario I've ever played; The Last Of Us (PS3) maybe the greatest game I've ever played through; Animal Crossing New Leaf (3DS) I may be playing this into 2016.

So yeah with what little time I've had to get an escape from my divorce, 2013 will be a year I'll remember fondly for the games I've played. I expect to finish the year up with Metal Gear Rising Revengeance, Grand Theft Auto V on the PS3, and Watch Dogs, Battlefield 4 on the PS4, along with the Xbone. Damn fun year.

I posted the short list last page, but it needs re-iterating how this year changed everything:

  • Resident Evil 2: cemented survival horror as a genre that was here to stay; marked the beginning of Hideki Kamiya
  • StarCraft: essentially invented eSports; king among RTSs; cemented Blizzard as a power player
  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time: oh so that's how you make a 3D game on a console, and oh video games can still be super fucking magical with polygons huh
  • Half-Life: single-player FPSs can be really fucking something without being obtuse or overly showcasey after all
  • Metal Gear Solid: finished the whole "games can be cinematic now" thing that FFVII started, plus brought stealth to the masses
  • Pokemon Red and Blue: video games can be full-on serious cross-media, cross-generational media phenomenons now guys, also redefined the Game Boy, oh and it's a really fucking good JRPG to boot

Plus games like Grim Fandango, Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped, Suikoden II, Banjo-Kazooie, Baldur's Gate, Mario Party, Thief: The Dark Project, Fallout 2, F-Zero Z, Heart of Darkness, Parasite Eve, Xenogears, Spyro the Dragon, fuckin' Tribes and oh, yeah, PANZER DRAGOON SAGA.

1998, bitches.

No year will probably beat 1998. It was the right time of 3-D hitting its stride, developers being able to take risks and Japan being on top of its game. Oh and American pc developers being on top of their game before they all moved to consoles and dumbed down gameplay =)
