We see the suit come off and on in the games. In every single game there doesn't seem to be a significant loss of height (Other M has fucked scale in general and it's Other M so I don't count it anyway), although the proportions change for obvious reasons that the Varia Suit's proportions aren't humanly possible.

...sorry for going off-topic: I always thought, if prepared right, Samus could totally be played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead.

I can't find a picture of her with blonde hair, but personally I think she could portray an experienced version of Samus Aran very well (just imagine blonde hair):

She can act cool/tough without making it look too forced dramatic or over-the-top (Scott Pilgrim, The Thing, Die Hard, Final Destination), gives off an intelligent, capable aura without looking too dumb or like a smartass, and already has experience with horror/monster plots (she can pull off a believable 'situation going to hell' scenario).

She's more girl-next-door type, but I've always felt that kind of personality/look would fit Samus more than depressing emo-PTSD child or generic pin-up blonde Mary Sue badass. Combined with the sitting half-mech-suit version of the Varia suit (or an exosuit with elevated 'stilt' feet), it could be amazing. I imagine a Dredd-style movie, just dropped right into the middle of some personal brutal up-close action; minimal world-building with Samus taking down a Space Pirate bounty and his horde of aliens/goons on a refitted derelict space station while dropping some Metroid easter eggs throughout.

I think she could totally pull off a believable "space bounty hunter with a troubled past". When I get the time (exams right now) I'll totally draw a super-convincing mock-up.

You know what, I actually have to agree. No one else really hit a chord with me as being a capable "movie Samus", but I think you're on to something.

That's like asking why you shrink when entering a building in Pokemon Red.

We see Samus actually put on the suit in the ship in Metroid Prime 3's intro and take it off in Metroid Zero Mission. No significant change in height.

The best Samus fan art I've ever seen is one where the suit is created like a mech and samus is sitting in the center of it, instead of as a suit that she actually fills fully. Such a cool, alternative take on her classic design.
