This Just in: Deus Ex: Mankind Divided Has "I Never Asked for This" Difficulty

A single post saying that I hate memes and don;t want them put into games is overreacting?

It's not like this shit is egregious. I consider it an overreaction because silly names for difficulty levels have been a thing for longer than internet memes have. To each his own, though. I totally get where you're coming from, I just don't think this particular example is anything to get rustled over. After all, it's the most well-known quote from the direct predecessor to this very game, and it fits well in this context.

Will play through legit so long as my first play doesn't involve meeting any "instant death snipers" like the original game on Realistic difficulty. Those guys didn't even need to aim!

But your save gets deleted if you die, so I suppose save scumming isn't even an option even if you wanted to?
There is still a possible workaround with the cloud save sync like others have mentioned, but whether or not it would work is not something we'll know right now.

Memes/catchphrases/references of your own creation are exempted from the meme in games rules

example:

Cringe: popcorn.gif in Halo CEA's achievements

Okay: Monument To All Your Sins in Reach's achievements

Agreed. Most of the achievements in the High Moon studios Transformers games were highly memorable/memetic lines from the cartoon, and it was glorious.

Gross.

Stop putting memes in games.

"Gross". Get a grip, man.

It would be one thing if there's a moment in the game where Adam turns to the camera and says it or another character has some dialogue along the lines of "I guess you never asked for this, huh? ;)" but this is totally harmless.

I don't see a problem with this.

For context: The difficulty settings in Deus Ex: Human Revolution were based on the player asking for a specific feel and were worded as such

"Give Me a Story" - Easy
"Give Me a Challenge" - Normal
"Give Me Deus Ex" - Hard

If we were to now assume that the game is responding in the sequel by giving us a hardcore mode, we could assume the player to thus respond by saying "I never asked for this".

I know I just justified SE's reasoning for quoting a line FROM THEIR OWN FUCKING PREVIOUS GAME, but hey, some folks are mad, and I figured maybe this might smooth things a bit.

This thread reminded me just how incredible that first reveal trailer of Human Revolution was, seriously is there a better game trailer?

Even the iconic "I never asked for this" carries much more weight in the trailer than in the actual game.

The game itself was fine, servicable, but that trailer is a work of fucking art.

WHY do games keep locking these things behind having to beat the game? Not everyone wants to play a game, beat it, and then immediately replay it, some people would likle to play it this way the "first" time and it baffles me why they lock it away.

They certainly are.

Probably just fear of someone accidentally enabling it, or it's considered a reward, increases the playtime you can get out of a game by basically making you play it twice rather than once.

I did like how Bioshock Infinite allowed you to unlock it (1999 Mode) from the get go by inputting the Konami Code in the main menu.

Yeah this is pretty much my favorite trailer (although I'm not sure if I like the cinematic or E3 2010 version better). It sounds crazy to say about a video game trailer, but every now and then I go back and rewatch it and I'm always still impressed. Some lines/scenes are a little cheesy but it's so damn atmospheric and it looks great.

You guys don't own the quote from their game. They can use it where they want. Especially if it makes perfect sense as a unlockable difficulty setting that is designed for hardcore players.

Isn't it obvious? That was a phrase that had its own definition and context. It didn't need to be a meme. People didn't need to repeat it over and over and over, but they thought it was cool or clever, so they did. And the more people who saw it, the more people began to use it in that new context.

and now the creators of that phrase are co-opting it in a humorous way? That's so 'gross'
lolol

Certainly. It did indeed not need to be a meme. 'I never asked for this' could have simply been an in joke amongst DE fans, rather than a full blown internet meme, and this reference still would've worked in the exact same capacity. The devs are winking at their audience. That's what's actually relevant and it's the only point they're actually making. That the quote became a 'meme', technically, is irrelevant to the sentiment behind the fanservicing.

You really want to experience the game with permanent game overs on your first playthrough? Uhhhh....

Some people like playing games on hard.

You do realize that this isn't just a harder difficulty, but that the actual game ENDS on death right?
No one in their right mind would want to experience the game like that for the first time, it's merely a bonus for replayability.

He says it a lot and it sounds weird in HR

By a lot you mean once, right?

The line appears once and it's a dialogue option so it's even missable / skippable.

People actually getting riled up over this, good lord. Get a grip.

I never understood why some get so worked up over an internet meme appearing in video games or some other piece of media. At the worst, it is a bit of cringe that you'll quickly forget.

Sweet jesus. I hope more games hop on this bandwagon in the future, especially long-ish RPGs like Deus Ex. Hands down the best way to play imo.

Why isn't this mode unlocked from the beginning?

I might want to play through that first. I am not sure I want to replay the game after going through on Hard.

Some people like playing games on hard.

But you can play the game on Hard.

Without having to restart the entire game everytime you die and have to redo everything again. Or having to muck about with Cloud Saves and USBs.

And straight from the beginning to.

Will there be an option to remove all the hideous object and objectives highlighting?

It just ruins the screen and the immersion.
