This Just in: Deus Ex: Mankind Divided Has "I Never Asked for This" Difficulty

By a lot you mean once, right?

The line appears once and it's a dialogue option so it's even missable / skippable.

People actually getting riled up over this, good lord. Get a grip.
I believe it was originally spoken in a promo trailer before the actual game was released. That was the main source of the meme AFAIK.

Why isn't this mode unlocked from the beginning?
Because it's supposed to be a challenge. You don't want to give the player a permanent death option until they've proven themselves and played through the game once on Hard.

The main annoyance is that when you reinstall the game having erased saves or if you finished it on PS4 and then double dip on PC, you won't be able to jump straight to the challenge, you'll have to play through to unlock it.

In this setting, players will only have one life to get through the game. Progress can be saved along the way, but if the player dies, that save gets deleted.

That is brutal. And there's totally going to be an achievement/trophy for completing the game on that difficulty as well. Oof.

I never understood these "one save" difficulties in narrative games. There is nothing challenging about sitting through the 20 minute intro over and over again then rushing to skip all the dialogue just to get back to where you were. Just seems really tedious.

Not the biggest fan of permadeath. I just hope that this won't represent their only effort at creating a challenge. HR on the hardest setting was too easy, and I would hope to see that fixed in the sequel.

This is dumb. You literally did ask for this just by the act of choosing the difficulty. It doesn't even make sense. If it made sense, then okay. They just want internet brownie points.

Here's another potential name for a difficulty that's a meme but also kinda implies the main character is going to have a hard time, just like "I Never Asked For This":

Resident Evil 2 Remake
-Easy
-Normal
-Hard
-Claire Sandwich, lol they're so with it XD

See how stupid it sounds?

Yep.

This is going to be brutal and I feel like a lot of people will die from really inconsequential stuff as opposed to boss fights or a hard part of the game.

I don't get the furore over the name. It's dumb but its just a bit of fun.

Give Me Deus Ex as the hardest on HR was cool though, but what would the alternative be here? "JC Will Be Proud"?.

As for the unlocking...well it isn't really a difficulty option in a sense. It's the hardest difficulty with one life only, i think? It's more of a challenge run, so I guess having it available from the start for those who want it wouldn't be bad but I can understand why they lock it behind completion because you know some people would ragequit and never finish it.

step 1 - remove context
step 2 - false equivelancy
step 3 - ????
step 4 - profit!

ahh shit, that was a meme, please don't get mad at me

So it's almost like Doom's Ultra Nightmare difficulty, but for an action RPG-ish game rather than an FPS. Interesting.

It is a good idea.
here is why:

1. Most of the adam jensens who finish this game, dont browse gaming news, and dont know about this meme. Its not popular.
2. When they finish this game, this new difficulty plops up and it sounds a bit strange, a bit funny, and this normal dude adam jensen goes ahead and looks at the description, satisfied that he played through the game once, thinking to himself, that he accutally is a little proud of himself, that he finished it, and sees the permadeath mention and shouts out loud: "oh good golly, dying erases my save? yeah I literally never asked for this!"

And he is like, 3.5 percent amused, because he thinks the name is fitting. And he goes ahead, closing the application, satisfied with his triumph over the baddies, and because emotions sum up, even a lillte bit more satisfied, bc the joke also is something slighty okayish-positive for him, and he goes to bed, resting, sleeping, dreaming of zelda wii u.

3. Games are allowed to unlock goofy stuff after a playthrough. Fat nathan drake e.g.

4. A goofy sentence that only plops up every new playthrough minus the first one should be even less intrusive than a goofy model, or game mechanic ( for a immersion purist)

Conclusion: Nobody should complain about it, and everybody who did should feel bad.
I am serious
