I own every Tomb Raider game to date and a couple years ago, played them all in release order. It was a pretty interesting journey to say the least, seeing how much the series, as well as Lara, have changed.
So you have three Laras, one for each "era" or canons from the games:
- Classic Lara (TR1-Angel of Darkness)
- 2006 Lara (Legends, Anniversary, Underworld)
- Modern Lara (TR13, Rise, Shadow)
To be totally honest the 2006 Lara is very similar to, if not a bit less over-the-top than, Classic Lara. Lara in Underworld is kind of like a transition between the two. Classic Lara was sexy, quippy, and dangerous. She was essentially your typical 90's comic book heroine--anybody who read female-led comics in those days knows exactly the type of character I'm describing. Very pulpy, very corny at times.
Modern Lara is a realistic take on the type of character, But she's not quite as "badass," or snarky. She's more whimsical and full of wonder. I think what they were planning to do was to make her this way in the first reboot game (Tomb Raider 2013), and have her grow into the more badass Lara. But it didn't really happen? And honestly it wouldn't have felt natural had it.
Personally I'm not a fan of the new Lara, though I do understand the intent behind her design. I'm ready for Tomb Raider to go back to cheesy and snarky. Basically, a game that combines the modern trilogy's gameplay with a character more like Bayonetta. Confident, sexy, smarmy. We got our realistic take on the series, now it's time to return to the comic book heroine.
Though, I'll say that there was a moment in Shadow when she felt like classic Lara again. Just for a moment, though.
