Thoughts on clip-on-ties?

I know a lot of peoples first reaction is they're tacky or that a person wearing one can't tie a traditional necktie, but there are practical benefits. A normal tie can pose choking risks around machinery, even something as benign as a fax machine has been known to snag the unsuspecting wearer. A tie, over a prolonged period, can also constrict blood flow to the head and cause things like eye strain as a result.

Would you wear one on a regular basis?

Clip on ties = cheating life.

In all seriousness if you can get away with it, go for it but I haven't worn one since I was about 6 years old. lol

It's ok to wear a clip-on around heavy machinery, like you say.

It's also ok to wear one on a short sleeve shirt: because at that point, you're already a goober, might as well commit.

The kind of person who wears a clip-on tie is probably the kind of person who could get killed by a fax machine.

You know your not supposed to make it that tight right?...

God damn LOL

OP, I have been wondering this myself for quite some time now. Is there any difference in appearance between a regular tie and a clip-on? If not, I see no reason to not go with the clip-on. Seems a whole lot easier than re-teaching myself to tie a tie every six months anyway.

They're obsolete. Even if you can't tie a tie zipper ties are the more discrete and natural looking solution.

Pro-tip: Don't make them so tight or put your tie INTO the paper shredder and OP will have nothing to worry about

It's like when a woman gives you the fake orgasm. Sure it looks good, and it maybe on first glance it makes you feel accomplished, but deep down inside, you know you didn't accomplish shit.

No. If a tie is a safety risk, the dress code should be relaxed enough that they shouldn't be required. If it's cutting off blood flow, you're doing it wrong.

I've never seen an adult clip on tie. They exist?

Also if you're feeling like a tie is choking you you're probably wearing an undersized shirt at the neck. It should never feel constricted.

Tacky. If you're working in an area where a tie might get caught in machinery, you probably shouldn't be wearing a tie at all.

And no, a tie put on properly isn't supposed to choke you.

This^ robbing yourself of the chance to look good in a tie is a crime.

As you say, it appears to only have advantages. But apparently people have a lot of strong feelings about this.

Personally I wouldn't wear them because I'm not strong enough to ignore arbitrary social rules. But if you don't care what others think, I envy you and say go for it.

Wonderful response. These are a giant no -- probably the single most embarrassing thing a professional individual could do is wear one.

My eight year old wears clip on ties. I wear normal ties.

Hey didn't one of the gremlins try to kill someone with a tie and a shredder?

Also I have been wearing ties for my entire life. I have never tied one so tight to cause adverse effects. I tie a nice not but never tight.

1: Tie clamps/bars/clips eliminates any "choking risks around machinery, even something as benign as a fax machine...."

2: Everybody and they granddad will tell you if you're feeling woozy after wearing a tie for a prolonged period of time, you're doing it wrong.

C'mon son.

Clip-on ties are good for kindergartners. In the 21st century, adult clip-on ties are obsolete and quite frankly embarrassing.

Those are some good points. While a real tie is probably more useful in dire situations (making a makeshift tourniquet, using it to slide along a wire, etc.), it's only more liable to get caught on something and strangle you in more typical situations. Most of the time, no one will know the difference either since it's just decoration.

I wonder what else is generally preferable when impractical and reviled in practical form.

Yes. :^)

I work at a grocery chain and we get specially branded ties :P

That sucks, but be honest here. If they're providing a uniform, is the clip on tie really the worst thing about it?

Love them, simple and practical. I very very rarely wear ties (and never for more than an hour or so) so I don't need to bother with a real tie.

This is true. Most people won't know. Those that wear ties daily will, and they might silently judge you. I used to for some stupid reason when I was younger, but I was an idiot. Still, learn to tie a tie. Unless you are working in an environment where the tie could potentially get snagged in something, and then in turn might strangle you, well to me it just sounds like you shouldn't be wearing a tie loosely in that scenario.

There are so many ways to tie a necktie, and less ways for a bowtie, but they don't take long to learn, and most techniques have similar moves. Not to mention, tying your own ties can have way better looking knots than the generic small and compact and flat knot of all clip on ties. Not to mention, you just may need that expertise down the road to educate a young child, or even that special someone who catches your eye. Either in showing them how to, or just talking about it. Just learn. It's easy.

I've heard this several times as well. And yes, they are doing it entirely wrong, because 90% of the time this happens, it's because the shirt they are wearing is too tight. Since most people don't wear ties often, they wear the appropriate shirts for said ties not as often too, and they might not think their neck would grow just a little bit, but enough to make the collar seem tight. Tied ties should never feel like they are choking you..if they are, then loosen the tie. If that unravels the tie, then get a bigger shirt. Go to a dept store and ask someone to measure you. It may make you feel slightly uncomfortable for a minute or so, but the comfort of a properly fitting dress shirt is paramount, since likely you will be in a scenario where "professionalism" is a must.
