Thoughts on Destiny 2 PvP?

It´s Osiris without any rewards so basically effort for nothing which obviously is lame.

A god tier game like Overwatch needed 1,5 years to be near "e-sports-ready" so i don´t understand why they would leave out the fun 6v6 mode. so sad.

Id like to think Im above average on d1 and d2 PvP but the game mode is just ok imo. I'll play it only because of milestones other than that most of my team is spent grinding pve.

That may change once the PC version is available but highly unlikely.

i'm enjoying it.

i only played a couple rounds in the D1 beta and maybe 1 round when the game launched. the same for D2 beta but i played about 5 rounds in a row yesterday and was having so much fun.

i found a gun that i really enjoy using and it plays well in the crucible. i'm not usually one for doing PVP but i'll probably spend more time in it. can't wait to play it on PC with a kb/m. if i can play this well with a controller then i should be better with kb/m.

Compared to other shooters, it's OK. Compared to Destiny, it's awful.

Things I consider. This new 4v4 focussed and confined map design:
- takes away expressive freedom of movement
- feels like there is no 'out' in a 'Fireteam Rush'
- heavily favours Auto Rifles/Sub Machines

Everything feels restrictive.

In Destiny, varied map design:
- ensured all weapons had a role to play
- always offered room to move and express yourself
- always offered an out, a piece of architecture or a forked-route that could help you recover
- hardly offered a hive-mind Fireteam Rush mentality

Comparatively Destiny 2 feels like I'm being suffocated.

'Fireteam Rush' is the infection of 4v4. Every now and again, fine, if you find yourself out of position (which hardly ever happened in Destiny) but now that's all there seems to be. It's the core gameplay loop for all Destiny 2 PvP. Why would Bungie think being rushed 90% of the time would be fun or interesting?

There's much less room for sneaking strategic plays. Comparatively, the maps are restrictive enough that the radar always shows your play. And then comes the Fireteam Rush. At least Destiny offered something of everything so I could appreciate different map design and gameplay loops. It had options.

It's not just maps and movement that suffer though because this new design philosophy seems to have changed engagements too. I consider myself to be a respectable, precise PvP player, regardless of what I think I still have a decent K/D ratio, but the amount of cheap spray-and-pray and pre-fire deaths is hilarious. The difference from Destiny is stark.

Maps size and design in Destiny suppressed spray-and-pray because there was no guarantee of where your opponent would be but in these smaller cubes the issue is more pronounced. Pre-fire, a result of narrow spaces and shortened distances, is pretty much a requirement to survive. There's no thinking allowed anymore.

Overall, Assault Rifles and Sub Machine Guns are now dominant. I've always been a precision player and I don't mind not being able to flex my play-style some of the time but all of the time? Really?

We no longer have choices in PvP. That restricted path Bungie seems to be going down is tightening. At least let me play modes when I want to play them. Maybe filter out the maps too. Something to make this at least half enjoyable.

Overall this new PvP is smaller in scale, not as intelligent in play and regressive in nature.

Like:

* higher focus on teamplay and positioning (due to higher focus on mid and long range combat)
* less super spam
* less shotgun sliding
* less fusion rifle one-shotting

dislike:

* Challenges that require power weapon usage - people just get super selfish and rather wait 20 seconds at the power ammo spawn than do actual PvP
* the mode where you need to pick up the enemy's "token" to score. there's always randoms that are selfish and run into enemy fire. i prefer regular Clash over that mode.

I feel like 4-people parties (fireteams) shouldn't be mathched against teams of 4 solo-queuers. Like, why not queue them straight into competitive.

Why can't I choose the gamemode I want to play ?

And what is the point in playing "competitive" when there is no ladder system or better rewards ?

At the moment, i quite enjoy it. A few niggles though i hope are sorted out. The 4v4 is good, but the randomness of the modes is off putting. If an option was available to choose a mode, that would be good to see.

Would love to see 6v6 return, but for now 4v4 is enough.

Every single match I tried to play was a complete clan pre-made against a complete random group. It's fucking terrible.

Much better than destiny 1. Less chaotic and more focus on teamwork.

It wouldn't hurt to add in a 6v6 mode though, for those who enjoy the chaos.

I like it significantly more. The massive changes they made to the weapon system to remove things like shotty slides and super spamming have really helped give the PvP it's own flavor and tactical feel.

Massive improvement across the board from me, and I imagine they'll bring back things like Mayhem and higher player counts for events in the future as well.

Really? It feels like 100x other games I've played now. Just has good gunplay. D1 PvP was pretty unique.

teammates don't seem to make use of the defensive options available to them (titans shields for example) and play non-clash modes like tdm but thats kind of the norm for most online shooters. kind of wish there were more defensive options when someone with super pops out of nowhere that gives you a fighting chance. but at least its not happening all the time like the first game.

i dont think i've heard any randoms use their mic either...that or they are all in party chat so its hard to play against other teams that are in clans able to coordinate via vooice chat

I like it way way more than Destiny 1's PvP. It's less chaotic, more team focused, more competitive with less cheap deaths. I genuinely like it, where as in Destiny one I always kind of just half enjoyed it.

Garbage. 30fps and the pvp feels sluggish although the lag isn't as bad as d1.

The trials mode sucks now. 3v3 was intense and fun. The new trials just isn't as good.

The good:
Countdown
Less super, heavy, and ability spam
longer time to kill

The bad:
Matchmaking seems to be bugged (Bungie has noted this for competitive)
too many trading kills
though people lagging around the map is a less frequent occasion it's not not good.
Hunter knife throw is about as powerful as sneezing on someone
Warlock rifts seem a bit too powerful
not enough maps
a lot of trash maps

Overall better than D1 but nowhere near good enough to be esports viable or taken seriously for that matter.

Hoping trials goes over well

Something I noticed.

It is easy to stay alive and kill dudes to win matches in D2 than D1.

The skill level decreased.

I like it more, but they absolutely need to add a solo queue (like CoD's mercenary playlist or whatever it was called). The focus is so high on team shooting with the lower player count right now that if you are playing with randoms and get paired against a team, it's usually not even close.

The other negative is the maps. I don't feel they are that good.

Yes D2 needs skilled options to solo wins against teams like D1.

Actually there is no incentive to refine your shooting skills.

Ok I'm salty as fuck right now, like legit nervous.

In D1, except in trials because I sucked at using snipers, I was pretty good in PVP, always first.

Now I simply suck. It doesn't matter if I use a MIDA or that Osiris looking gun, I always lose, and they kill me with what it looks like to be 2 shots. Damn, I even lost using a MIDA vs full auto on a long distance in a sec.

What the hell should I do to improve or even understand what's happening?

(More on topic, right now I'm hating it because I suck at it)

Are you sure that you are being shot at by only one person? Almost everyone these days is shooting in tandem. I have not had any issues with ttk but I have not played trials yet.

I don't mind it. But I hate almost all forms of pvp so im not a good judge of these things.

The blink shotgun nonsense of Destiny 1 infuriated me to no end. In this one, when i get popped I know why. I made a mistake, wasn't covering a lane properly, wasn't with a teammate, didn't know when to engage (or disengage).

Its much more thoughtful to me. But, Meh.

Not my bag anyway.

Yeah pretty sure. Team shots are all another matter.

Maybe I don't like the maps, I always have someone shooting at me from a side, and I move carefully without pushing.

You are probably being team shoot... there is no way to fight back in D2.

The map design feels the same across all of them, just different gimmicks for D2.
6v6 playlist should have been an option in quickplay...

As for Quickplay, let me choose what game type I want to go into.
I don't like Supremacy(kill confirmed). Let me choose to only play Control, Clash... and bring back rift!

I understand they wanted a more balanced competitive scene... but it should have stayed in that playlist.

Quickplay should have stuck with D1s game mode selection and an option to do 6v6.

Its absolutely terrible and lost every feature that made Destiny PVP fun. I have no interest in ever playing again past the initial quests.

i quite like the TTK.

yknow, given how simple and enclosed the pvp maps are, and how few players are present, it indeed is quite odd that the framerate is fixed at 30 for pvp right now.

This is honestly my GotY so far, however I hate the direction they took with PvP. It's way more focused on competitive and ESports now. I personally find it more stressful than fun. I still think Destiny 2 is leagues better than Destiny 1...however D1 has the funner Crucible.

Some of us want to just enjoy ourselves in PvP...can't do it anymore with 4v4.

I'm pretty sure it is 30fps due PVE.

There are good reasons to have the same framerate for all modes.

It is not at all focused on esports. Like at all.

Making crazy high level plays with powerful abilities and weaponry plays to audience. That's why D1 PvP is so popular on Twitch. D2 will not have the same staying power as a result. You can only watch a guy teamshoot another guy so many times.

I don't really mind the fact that the PvP is bad. You could just ignore a bad mode, or set of modes in this case. Unfortunately, Bungie is somehow convinced it is not bad, continuing to force people to play it to finish exotic quests and such. Stop fucking doing this.

There's probably some dev at Bungie right now furiously programming a new exotic weapon quest that requires 500 warlock headshot kills using green void sidearms.

Coming from Titanfall 2 and other shooters, how is the pvp still at 30fps?? I didnt play the PC beta but people that did said it felt great. Personally I wouldve preferred they lowered the graphics in pvp so they could hit 60fps, the game just feels super sluggish and slow mo.

I've already played it more than I ever did Destiny 1's, so I can definitly say I like it more than D1's (not saying much, as I hated D1's). I'm going to wait and see how the meta develops over time before saying if I like it or not though.

So far I'm really enjoying the two Competitive modes for the most part and I've hated pretty much every Quickplay mode that's not Clash.

Slow paced and generally dull.

Not if you're a hunter. The game on PC will become a 60+fps hunter fest.

I would like to see them drop in some maps from the pve world and do 16vs16 players with tanks and pikes, bring back halo bungie. Do it.

This would be amazing. Keep the 4 v 4 for competitive and give us big team battle for everything else.

I've been enjoying it quite a bit. I like the primary focus, and I haven't really come across power ammo campers like I initially thought would be the case.

D2 PvP is a tail of far extremes for me. When things click, it's a lot of fun but when things aren't going your way its REALLY bad.

D1 PvP mindset definitely won't work in D2 cause the way the PvP is structured punishes the old D1 PvP mindset.

I'm fairly certain that D2 PvP is going to be a very hotly contested subject for a long time.

It's a spam fest of auto rifles right now. The inability to select modes is also disappointing. With 1.3 million concurrent players we can definitely have more than 2 playlists.

Lack of join in progress in the competitive playlist makes solo queuing in that list annoying as teammates will quit leaving you in a 3v4 or 2v4, which is basically unwinnable in destiny 2 due to the time to kill buffs and ability nerfs.

An incredibly disappointing downgrade from Destiny. Every match feels the same. Much less room for anything outside of staying with your team and rushing the enemy. Most of the maps are uninspiring too – it even made me wish for the return of Twilight Gap.

Probably the only thing I downright hate about the game.
