Thread of obscure games you don't think anyone else has played

That one is fairly obscure I think. I'm sure people at GAF has played it, but it's a pretty decent jRPG. Very childish, but good!

Loved that RTS. Also had a PS1 version, but the PC one is much easier to play. While I think the balence was broken to an extent (Where after the long tech tree you could get a long range weapon that you couldn't counter without the same weapon when used correctly), I loved the unit customization so much.

YES!!! Drkirby you are the man.

Great, great memories.

I remember playing the demo without a "3D accelerator" and then buying a shiny new VooDoo2 (chyea 3dfx) once i bought the game. No turning back since then.

I got an Atari ST and a stack of games when I was young, half of which I've never played.
Of the ones I did, this I remember and have never seen mentioned anywhere:

Surprised Wiki had an article on it.

Probably not as obscure, but I'm curious to see who else has played it:

Might not be as obscure as I think, I just have never heard anyone ever make reference to it. Even at a video game company (which, admittedly, doesn't mean that there's more video game knowledge than a forum).

You played it on amiga or atari st. not the best bitmap brothers game anyway...

Here are a couple I've played in my youth.

Moonstone: A Hard Days Knight
An action game with a knight. You choose one out of four knights, which determines your initial location on the map. Your goal is to obtain the moonstone for the Druids. Your movement on the map is limited, and when the day runs out, the other knights and the Dragon take turn. It was pretty fun and extremely violent for its time. I still love this game.

Moonstone was hyped to death at the time. So many including me played it just for the blood.

Ah, I remember stumbling on footage of this game as the Japanese version is called Mesopotamia.
This being GAF, I'm sure this one isn't considered obscure... but no one I know ever played this game.

Ah I've played the demo. Kind of forgot about it over the years though...

Time for my contribution.

Nonono Puzzle Chai-Rian. The boxart really caught my and I noticed it cheap on Play-Asia a few years ago and so found out a bit more and decided to jump in. Also worth noting for Japanese DSi owners an expanded version of the best mode in the game got released as the "KuruKuru Action: KuruPachi 6" on DSiWare about a year ago. Here is some footage. (from the GBA version). It is made by Creatures Inc (who you might have heard of...)

937350_83037_front.jpg

Puzzle Series Vol. 12: Akari. Similar story to above; checked it curiously, saw it cheap and went for it (in hindsight I'm not sure why I hesitated on others in the series...guess I thought they would also fall in price but they didn't; they just went out of print).

Such a great game. Puzzles all involved floaty pillars or lighting torches, but they were still fun. :lol Great exploration and a huge detailed world with lots of secrets. Good story. The whole package, really.

I have never played this. Looks good.

How is the combat?

Loved this as a kid. went back and played it recently... and it's a terrible game lol:

Loved the music for this game. I guessed the password to get to the last level.

Who's played Ecstatica? It was fantastic, it had great atmosphere, gnome bashing and you were chased by an invincible werewolf, very scary.

That brings back some memories :D Yeah, this game was terrifying. Bloody hard too, don't think I ever got very far. For some reason seeing this also made me remember Bioforge which I played around the same time. Was really impressive at the time.

Chaos on the spectrum is a game that I adored but don't ever see mentioned much. Was a turn based strategy game made by Julian Gollop before he made the Rebelstar\Laser Squad\X-Com games. Was really replayable (lots of random elements and played like a board game) and great fun multiplayer.

There was a DOS version as well. I also remember playing Magic Pockets on a PC, another bitmap brothers game.

Net Yaroze.

I think this is pretty obscure. Net Yaroze was a consumer development kit for the original PlayStation. When you bought the package, you got a black debug PS1 and some limited development software so that you could programme your own crappy games. Well, you would expect them to be crappy - many of the games that the scene churned out were actually not too bad. Blatant clones of existing games, yes, but playable and with a strange charm to them. They were often devoid of background music, abused the Wilhelm scream too much and had game breaking bugs, but I spent many an hour toying with them. They were really a lot of fun when you had exhausted playing your actual games, but had no money to buy new ones.

In the UK, the Official PlayStation Magazine would bundle the following games onto a monthly demo disc:

Adventure Game
Between The Eyes
Blitter Boy (Chris Chadwick)
Bouncer 2
Clone
A Dog Tale
Gravitation
Haunted Maze
Hover Car Racing
The Incredible Coneman
Mah Jongg (Gerhard Rittenhofer)
Opera of Destruction
Psychon
Pushy 2
Rocks'n'Gems (Gerhard Rittenhofer)
Super Bub Contest (Alex Herbert)
Terra Incognita
Time Slip
Total Soccer
Tunnel

There are so many gems in there. I get nostalgic thinking about Adventure Game's scripting bugs, Rocks'n'Gems' insane difficulty, and Opera of Destruction's terrible flight controls accompanied by The Ride of the Valkyries opera music. :lol

Videos of the games here.

Well good for them - but to say that Gears of War is at all innovative, like a lot of people did when it was released, is a lie. History proves that its often the 'forgettable' games that innovate the most - I bet a lot of developers harvest their ideas simply because they think no one remembers them, which to me is very sad.
Calling Winback innovative is pushing it a bit. I wouldn't be surprised if the developers of Gears of War had never even played Winback. That's how far apart they are on the quality of gameplay/cover mechanic spectrum.

I completed Winback, but only because I had a great deal of patience. Some might call it stubbornness. It was, on all accounts, a horribly mediocre game.

Think of 2D Zelda...

It's a great Zelda clone, actually is better than most, if not all, 2D Zelda's.

Hellnight

One of the best survival horror games I played, I have yet to meet other person that played this.

Haley Wars

A nice shoot'em up.

Vampire Hunter D

2yvjmvl.jpg

A mediocre game in most aspects, is based on the movie, well it's based in the last 20 minutes of the movie (the castle part).Looks like a RE clon, but in reality it's a beat'em up.

Time Commando

Control were clunky, but it was a spectacular game back then, and actually I had a lot of fun.

fun.

I have played both of these.

I had Hellnight on my PSP for a while, and I agree, it is up there with the ranks of Silent Hill in terms of horror. I have seen new copies of this just last year in the bargain bin of a Norwegian supermarket.

The latter I have only played a demo of, but its really long ass anime intro inspired me to seek out the series.

Pizza to Go for the Apple II.

I used to play this every day back in kindergarten, but unfortunately I can't find ANY information whatsoever about this game online.

Some of the games mentioned here will be bringing a nostalgic tear to the eye of many an old Euro/UK GAF'er. Obscure? Nah, old and European. oh, wait, same thing, me and the games! :D

Hahaha I remember getting Time Commando with a graphics card I bought. That game was fun!

This one just popped into my head: One Must Fall 2097

OMF2097 isn't obscure!
I replayed a game of it over the internets just last year!

Now the *original* one must fall (basically the demo of a SFII clone), that's obscure ;)

Oops, sorry about that then. I didn't bother to look up it's popularity. I just remember playing it growing up and no one else playing it....

Amazon: Guardians of Eden a point and click game. I remember it being hilarious. I also remember it being the first game I played after I bought a sound card.

Countermeasure. You drive a tank up the screen and shoot stuff. Was very awkward.

countermeasure.png

Dig Dug II. Added a kind of overworld, which was weird, but it was actually pretty fun once you got into it.

dig_dug_2-140967-1.jpeg

Mario Teaches Typing. Does what it says. He's running through Bowser's castle and you have to type correctly in order to not die.

mario-teaches-typing1.png

Orb 3d where you control an orb that bounces from side to side against paddles. Like Pong, but in the middle is a grid with objects on it. You press the button when the orb is over an object and it crashes into it, making it disappear. The 3d aspect came into play because the orb would go over the grid when it went left to right and under it when it went right to left. Objects had a few different properties like disappearing only when hit from the bottom.

Orb%203D-2.png

Wrath of the Black Manta. Was a decent game. You were a ninja and killed stuff. You could get throwing stars and shit. Why am I explaining this?

WrathoftheBlackManta.jpg

The X-Files: The Game I don't know it can be called obscure, but I've never heard anyone mention it. It's the best FMV game I've ever played (lol).

xfiles_profilelarge.jpg

Sesame Street 123 was bought for my brother. It was actually pretty good for what it was. Can't find a gameplay picture though.

There's more. I rented a ton of games back in the 80s for my NES and I had an Atari 5200 so most of the latter would probably be pretty obscure but I'm going to bed.

's okay ;)
I didn't include it in my list because I didn't think it was that obscure, but it needs more love! (for the music, if nothing else)
Everyone who hasn't played it, here's your chance, since it went freeware a while ago!

Silent Storm? I wish they'd make a new version without the stupid robot suits at the end.

ss01.jpg
Once I understood what the end-game would be like (going by the skill-tree or whatever) I could not motivate myself enough to keep playing it, just knowing how terrible it would be.

"Hey we have this great tactical game with WWII weapons and a fully destructible environment. You can equip a guy with an MG42, hide him in a bush and set-up an ambush or just pepper a house full of holes while hurting people inside, cool shit like that. I think we should strip all that away! Those skills you're earning now? Pointless! Hah!"

And it's such a good and interesting game at that. :(

I remember this being my first game in a cardboard minisleeve thingy.
It was pretty good for a FMV game, but the best FMV game IMO is still Gabriel Knight 2 (altho the X-files game was obviously better acted ;).

I put hundreds of hours into this game, and never got all the damn toys!
Arg!
And that damn bunny thing always pissed me off. No matter how nice I was too it, it would still attack me more than the enemy.
Still, loved it.

The City of Lost Children.

Awesome point and click...too short, but with a fantastic atmosphere.

I played it too, but never finished it, I remember it was cool and a bit hard, I was a big fan of Alone in the Dark so I ended liking it too.
