Thread of Wii U Gameplay Ideas

- Capable of more buttons than any console controller ever (except that big honkin' PSO Gamecube keyboard).
- Context-sensitive buttons, changing as your status or position in the game changes.
- Could allow for MMO-style action bars; a traditional controller has a hard time making, say, 10-15 spells fit comfortably. Now imagine you can just touch a spell icon to cast it.

Problem with buttons on touchscreens: you have to look at the touchscreen. Somewhat cumbersome if the action is on your T.V.

Other than that, seems like most of the ideas involve moving the HUD off your T.V. Seems nice but ultimately superficial.

Augmented reality, I feel, depends a lot on the performance of the system. If it's not accurate/fast enough, people won't use it.

An online FPS with large scale battles similar to MAG where players are divided into squads that have to perform specific tasks - the majority of the players, the grunts, play the game as a traditional FPS, while a few players from each team are randomly chosen each round to use the Wii U controller with a top-down RTS view to provide tactical support to the players on the ground. They would be able to set objectives for individual squads, set way points, send warnings about enemy locations, send in supplies, call in airstrikes, set landing zones, call in emergency evac, etc.

A City Building/RTS hybrid where the player would use the Wii U controller to construct and maintain their cities from a top-down RTS view and then expand their empire by conquering other nations. Combat would take place from a 3rd person perspective and as the leader of their nation the player can dive into the thick of combat as well as dynamically switching to RTS view to command their troops and employ strategies. Think Kingdom Under Fire mixed with Age of Empires.

An RTS where the tablet is the mini map and the TV screen is the in-game engine. You choose units by drawing a circle around them and then drawing a line from that circle to direct where you would like them to move.

Meanwhile, you could use the pointer on the tablet and analog sticks/buttons for micromanagement of those units in the game itself.

I could some minor implementation with fighters. You would have two people playing on the tv while a spectator could watch it on the tablet. He could turn on input display, frame data, etc. and maybe even change camera angles and special effects to make some dynamic looking replays. Possibly allow for in game brackets and things for tourney play. Could be pretty useful for commentators if you ask me.

A detective game, somewhat similar to LA noire, but with more depth in clue finding and interrogation. Using the wiiU as a notepad to write clues. Then when you find a clue press a button and the wiiU becomes a camera screen in which you move it around and zoom in on the clue you want to take a picture of.

an espionage game where you hack security cameras and view them on the WiiU to help you move undetected.

I would like to see a sequel to the DS game "Touch Dic" but done right this time.

man, a game were you can poke animals in their eyes.
That would be my fav game for sure.

Wii-UBet.
We all bet which kid will win the fight over the tablet controller.
WII-UFrisbee.....self explanatory
WII-U-A-backyard wrestler....
you can take the tablet and smash it over the poor chaps head who doesnt have one.
I wont even get into homebrew porn possibilities....

There really is limitless real possibilities for this.
Surgery in trauma could be fun.
A HD TWEWY (i know im reaching)
Maps,items,
RTS on this will be great

Seeing some of the lame ideas posted in this thread, I hope developers will do more than simply putting a map on the 6" screen.

Moving your little map/hub from the bottom right corner of the screen to the 6" screen is NOT = "optimized" for the Wii U.

Thing is, human eyes only see one place at a time. So, all gameplay ideas with the WiiU should be stuff that you can do while you are inactive in the game because if you look at the WiiU controller screen, you are not looking at the main screen at that time.

I think the only interesting ideas will come from the fact that it is a touch screen. In fact, it's like a giant Nintendo DS but since the screens are not fixed to one another, some stuff won't be possible (like that Dig Dug game on DS playing on the 2 screens in "vertical mode").

Almost all the ideas in this thread so far are stuff that could be done in a less cumbersome way without the screen on the controller. I would really like to be able to think about some great ideas for this, but the only one I can come up with are stuff you want to hide from other players in the same room and you make this on your own screen, but that would require multiple WiiU controllers connected to the same console. It is one thing that can be done with portable consoles.

To start with I obviously hope that we'll see more creative uses than showcasesd in this thread, but we are just hobbist coming up with ideas on the spot anyway.

But concerning looking down on the controller:
1. It can literally be done in a split second. I mean it's not like you need to turn your head, the controller is right there in front of you.
2 If we have a game with a menu on the controller that is being used throughout the game(see my metroid mock-up below) who says we wont learn exactly where the touch 'botton' for the speed booster, plasma beam etc. is on the controller removing the need to look down (we don't look down when pushing normal bottons anyway).
3. Moving menus down on the controller is manly just to get rid of the hud from the screen, which I think is fine, hopefully the games will do more than that, and I'm sure Nintendo's own games will at least. So for example in my metroid mock-up menus on the controller is just one way to use the touchscreen, using it as a visor or in some other way will obviously be the bigger game changer.

Most important improvement I expect is definitely better handling of multiple supporting screens/menus. The handling so far has always been awkward (remember the right button, etc.). Same for e.g. weapon choosing. Seeing all possible options at once will feel much better.

Genre-wise what I'd really love to see again are those complex flight simulators, that came with manuals thick enough to bludgeon people with them. Nostalgia galore. The bazillion switches and gauges in your cockpit would be no real problem with the U-Pad since you can pan it around. Back then you had to memorize a lot of keys instead.

And of course I hoping for a decent console RTS like everybody.

Gets flashbacks to DS reveal threads.

I bet you were a real popular kid. "Why are you using that water pistol when I can already get wet in the shower?" "Why climb that tree when you can just pretend you are already on top of it"

Why do you even play games? I mean it can all be replaced by closing your eyes and imagining.

If you think what you've posted comes close to the experience of basically using the tablet to turn your room into the holodeck (yay imagination) then you're either deluded, extremely dull or a troll (hint: I think I know which).

On a serious note I think there's two types of gamer. One wants games like they've been since the first day joysticks were invented and will never change. One enjoys that as well as a more interactive, immersive experience. Frankly the two should never talk to each other.

When the next great civil war rips apart humanity, it'll be over VR vs dual analogue. (And the VR people will win because they've practiced :p)

ELITE BEAT AGENTS YES!

I'd also like to see a Kirby's Canvas Curse Sequel - even if it's only playable configuration is WiiBlet only.

It's more presentation than gameplay, but I think something like the video messages in Dead Space would fit nicely to the Wii U concept, receiving those messages on your controller... pretty good.

Similar to how Sylvia's sultry phone calls in No More Heroes were done. So simple, yet brilliantly implemented.

The second screen would also work with any game featuring exploration which usually cut away to something the player just found, like RE or CSI or something. Like many DS games already do - find on top screen, manipulate/examine on bottom screen.

edit: we're just scratching the surface here, but after being skeptical during the unveil, I'm starting to think there are actually some cool possibilities there.

But why? Why would this be a good game? No more photography games, please! Afrika was bad enough.

EDIT: Fatal Frame might be the only case where I might see the light on this one.
Endless Ocean 1 & 2 are awesome and not just about photography but since they do have this aspect as well, that lots of people enjoyed, that would be sweet to have.

It's not an action game or anything that you'd fear would tire you so it could certainly be awesome to have a nearly true to life 1:1 first person view as you explore the depths.

Imagine if they could also combine it with headtracking since the controller includes a camera.

I'd love to control a tank from the inside with this tablet.

I'd also like to see a guitar hero where the tablet is placed in the guitar and instead of hearing the guitar from the tv you hear the music coming out of the tablet.

I think I thought this one through properly. Forgot to mention that P2 gets the whole screen if they're playing online. Oh, and P1 can command the other squad members by tapping on them and dragging in a direction or something. [edit] And vision selections could just be mapped to dpad instead of wasting screen space on P1.

You all have some really great ideas. And great jobs with the mock-ups, even the silly ones!

I know it's not a "hardcore" idea, but I think a lot of puzzle games could benefit from the controller, or make a good jump over to it. Things like Picross would be great.

I think it'd be great to see some adventure or point-and-click games show up. You could use the Wiimote to click around and leave the tablet on the table. The tablet could be used for keeping notes, interacting with objects, an item management area, or act like a communication device.

I think horror games would be neat too. I assume the camera can tell if you are looking right at the screen or not. Well, the tablet could provide you with a letter to read, a piece of evidence to rotate around and examine, etc. While that's going on, something could sneak on the TV, waiting for you to look back up and scare you.

A game like Super Scribblenauts would be neat, though not super innovative or anything.

I think some "two handed" things could be done using the tablet screen set down and the Wiimote in the other hand. Stupid example, but there could be a game like Harvest Moon where you have to build a shed doing a mini-game, and you use the stylus on the screen to precisely aim it and the Wiimote to hammer it in. Or, go fishing and cast your line with the Wiimote and reel on the tablet.

Again, these aren't the best of ideas, just trying to think of things not mentioned yet.

The majority of my ideas were under the assumption multiple Wii U controllers could be used ... so yeah, I got nuttin' :(

At least co op gameplay could be pretty good on the Wii U. One player could use the TV while the other could use the gamepad. You could assign the two players different roles too. For example in a FPS, one player could use the pointer controls and be a gunner while the other player using the gamepad could be a hacker engineer medic sort of class using the touchscreen for control in certain points.

Gahiggidy

My aunt & uncle run a Mom & Pop store, "The Gamecube Hut", and sold 80k WiiU within minutes of opening.
In FPS games they can use the screen on the controller to render the feet.

I don't have any specific ideas at this time that haven't already been mentioned, but I would like to see what they do with a new Warioware title.

This could also be applied to a Metal Gear Solid game with player 1 helping Snake via codec.

Seeing all this reminds me of a rather obscure Spectrum game, "They stole a million". You'd start a level with some blueprints of a building, and you'd have to plan out a heist for four independent squad members with different skills in that building. Then in the second phase, you'd carry it out, with re-ordering squad members as and when things occurred to throw a spanner in the works. I think there's a germ of a WiiU game in that, gadget-based heists?

Has no-one suggested a Tricorder yet? There is a Trek game on the way...

I'd like to see a New New Super Mario Bros. game that has the normal four-player action that the last game has. Whomever has the WiiU controller would control Wario and would have the specific goal of stealing coins from the other players along the way. (He would even be able to steal challenge coins!) Wario would have the freedom to move around the stages without being held back by the other players. Taking a page out of the Wario Land games, he would be invincible. I think it would be a lot of fun to throw people off cliffs, bump into them to prevent them from getting the flagpole bonus, and just causing chaos. The game was already pretty chaotic already, but it would even more fun if that kind of gameplay was encouraged.

like i said, i would love to have an online MMO of wii plaza (or animal crossing)
one big huge map (globe) you can run around meeting people, and the main TV screen display the over view world, and the small screen will be focusing your character

Come to think of it, Dragon Age might work excellently on the Wii U. The touch screen could be used to implement some or most of the interface from the PC versions.

For just about any RPG inventory management could be better, and for DA in particular you could have the close-up action view on the big screen and the overhead tactical Baldur's Gate-style view on the touch screen.
