Time: Top 10 video games of 2015

I like mixing in iOS games. So much hot garbage on the platform it is difficult to actually find decent games.

Like I've heard of Bloodborne, Tomb Raider and MGS but Prune looks cool.

While fallout 4 is a good game, the latter half of the game removes it from goty contention. It boils down to eliminate other 2 factions just because I said so without any thought to logic or story telling and removes player choice.

You could argue the same about MGS V about how part 2 was incredibly disappointing, but at least mgs5 had amazing gameplay while Fallout 4 felt too much like playing Fallout 3 with better real time gun play and limited base building.

I'm finding more and more iOS games creeping onto my Top 10 lists as the platform matures and grows more sophisticated.

I think I had two make the cut last year and at the moment I'm looking at at least three for 2015.

Ah that's why you got to repeat it every ten posts, because it's fine to have an opinion different from yours. What you are doing is nothing but condescending.

You don't have to, post yours so we can get into some serious discussion.

I'll post mine for the hell of it.

10) Splatoon
9) Dragonball Xenoverse
8) Life is Strange
7) Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls
6) Dying Light
5) Metal Gear Solid 5
4) Witcher 3
3) Bloodborne

where's Prune?

Undertale is an okay pick but the following 'hipster 3' of Prune, a choose your own adventure book, and some FMV shit is where this ceases even being a top video game list and becomes someones bizarre agenda against seeming too "into games".

Really good list from a mainstream publication like Time. It has some good AAA titles that even hardcore gamers can appreciate, some indie titles that showcase diversity in gaming, and some mobile that your average "non-gaming" 20-30 something might be able to enjoy.

Some totally deserving games that should be on that list (Bloodborne), but aren't, which means Time needs to get with the times.

Why is everyone sleeping on the XB1 version of Rise of the Tomb Raider?

Sure, the PS4 version is #2. But the XB1 version has passion. You'd think that would be in consideration for these lists, but it seems to be getting snubbed.

Until Dawn is missing

This guy gets it.

Lesser known games get far more exposure on GAF than Time.

Except Prune, apparently.

Maybe, but TIME reaches places that GAF doesn't, and if there's a good game on platforms I don't spend much time with, I like hearing about them whether or not GAF is the source, rather than spuriously assuming Publication X, Y or Z simply doesn't know or understand vidya gaems just because they didn't step in line behind a title I've heard about a hundred times here, choosing instead to highlight something different.

GOTY lists are excellent vehicles for this, the Prune OT on GAF went pretty much unnoticed despite rave impressions and it's pretty rad that Time didn't forget, even if everyone else did.

Prune gameplay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OT3HxcZDLYo

Looks like a fun little game that I'd have fun for 10 minutes and then drop forever. Certainly could never be a serious GOTY contender and if it is then there are some ulterior motives for this artsy, hipster throwaway game to win out against all the juggernauts we've had this year.

I disagree, I don't feel like I'm being condescending. Perhaps bad wording which I can admit to, sure. I'm fine with that. He can have his opinions, as we all can. But I think there's a lot about Bloodborne, especially more than say MGSV, which is in 3rd, that is far more legitimate. It was just a big bloated repetitious mess to me without much of a story and a poor soundtrack, things that defined the earlier games in the series. People praise the gameplay because it's solid and polished, but I couldn't find any actual scenarios in the game to match that specific polish. And there's a severe lack of soul and creativity. Say what you will about the previous stories, but at least they were written with great heart and emotion, and the music was typically memorable and fitting. I couldn't find that in MGSV at all. It was practically absent. Just a soulless game.

A great game, to me, has this harmony between gameplay and game design. MGSV's gameplay is great. Its game design however leaves a lot to be desired. The open world design is uninspired and boring, and the story/missions are uninteresting garbage. This, to me, makes the gameplay pointless, as I'm not able to apply that good gameplay to something I care about, and this is the polar opposite of other games this year like Bloodborne or even fucking Yoshi's Wooly World, games that have great game DESIGN and structure. Those games have heart and soul behind them. MGSV feels like a corporate checklist.

People asking where certain games are in these kind of threads is just baffling.

Time made a list, these are their choices. We can all write up our own lists that no one will particularly care about later this year.

hipster throwaway game to win out against all the juggernauts we've had this year.

The game has 50 levels, which puts it well outside of 'ten minute hipster throwaway title.'

It's interesting that people are still framing this in terms of winning and losing, as if the only purpose of GOTY lists is to validate things they like, and reinforce the idea that other people's ideas are wrong.

07: Ryan North's: To be or not to be (PC, Android, iOS)

Oh hells yeah!

I had to go back when I read your "chose your own adventure" comment, and it looks like I completely missed Ryan North's game!

Okay, now I already thought the TIME list was great, but now it officially kicks ass.

(To the guy I quoted, sorry your tastes are so narrow. It must be incredibly limiting as an enthusiast who posts on Gaf.)

Prune @ #1 is like Pitchfork putting Beyonce at #4 on their year end list. Expected something like that on the list for shock value, but didn't think it would be #1 lol.

Played prune on a classmate's ipad a month ago, was pretty okay. Put it down after a couple minutes and was done, but it was serene as shit.

I wouldn't count on it. There are lot of heavy hitters this year people liked.

Witcher III will win GAF GOTY. No doubt. Bloodborne and MGSV will have a presence, yes, but Witcher III was a great multiplatform game that was available to more players outside of just PS4 owners and more accessible/friendly than Bloodborne. So I get that, and I'm even okay with it.

Her Story is without a doubt one of the best games this year. Expand your horizons, you might like it.

Still way too early for a list imo, gotta at least give December games their due. I don't really think I'll be able to even start a list until feb of next year with all the games that came out this year that I still want to play.

Or the author just liked those games more than others this year. Have you even played them?

I'm up to world 3 in Prune, and I'm not going to lie: this is one rad puzzle game. It took a lot of UI inspiration from Monument Valley, but they couldn't be more dissimilar otherwise. Lots of freedom to experiment with an ideal path and it's been doling out really cool setups that make full use of the mechanics and obstacles along the way.

Honestly, people hating on mobile games for getting critical and awards recognition over "real games" are on the same list of people who do the same for handheld games, and that list isn't fit to wipe my ass with.

I really disliked the girl's acting. She reminded me of Tim Roth where he over-gesticulates and really gets too into it and as a result it looks really unnatural. I thought Tim Roth was ass in Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs past scenes.
Just a random comment, I don't think the game's bad.

I like the Time list, both this year and last year, because it has a wide variety of games that show off the breadth of what the field has to offer, including games that don't have a lot of marketing money behind them. I'm glad it's not just a regurgitation of the most popular AAA titles.

Was literally just about to come back to the topic to post a message very similar to this. I lost track of time for a while there. Seeing the
new type of tree
is really cool.
