Times we overreacted in 2016

Everything Final Fantasy XV. There was a new overreaction thread each week. Sometimes several threads each week. The most memorable and entertaining:

FFXV 4chan leaks
FFXV's sexism
FFXV delay rumor
FFXV delay
FFXV looks like a PS2 game
FFXV's saviour PS4 Pro
FFXV unplayable on PS4 Pro
FFXV day one patch
FFXV season pass/DLC
FFXV Balee dat

There were 3 threads dedicated to its japanese sales, thats not including the one that got merged with it. 3 threads of people making fun of XVs sales when its by far the best selling ps4 game in that country.

Nintendo-NX-controller-1-650x379.jpg

Nothing comes close to this.

Remember that thread where people got really riled up by a non existent gamer gate reference in Mario?

Although honestly any thread that gets locked like that could probably count.

Oh I remember that, it was so embarrassing and I had to unfollow Allison Rap as she refused to be corrected and would block anyone who corrected her.

She was harmlessly mistaken, while having lost her job and being target of a extreme hate group.

Give her a break.

You guys who are saying No Mans Sky because of death threats and stalking (the last of which didn't actually happen) do realize that this is about GAF yeah?

Also,

A: NMS was not an overreaction. It was absolutely justified.

B: The reason the "hate campaign" grew was because it was getting attention and people saw a way for their voices to be heard because they where fed up with this crap happening far to often. Doesn't happen often because people usually think that all they can do in these situations is take it up the rear.

C: It would be healthy to try to separate the minority of mental midgets that actually did send the death threats and so on from people who had a legitimate beef and where expressing it in acceptable ways. You will find these idiots in EVERY campaign or movement in human existence but that shouldn't delegitimize the entire campaign or movement itself.

B: I have not seen once, on this website at least, anyone say that they don't want you to enjoy the game or actively try to make you not like it. Maybe it happened but I've read... a whole lot of NMS posts and if it did it is VERY few and far between so just lump them in with the other mental midgets instead of everyone else because I truly don't think that is the sentiment most are trying to convey. So for real, if you can enjoy it then please keep on keeping on and we will do the same.

Now, my vote for overreaction... the plethora of Gaffers that I see who keep posting that VR is a fail... I just don't...

Even if you completely ignore the deplorables sending death threats and all, I still think the reaction to NMS was a massive overrreaction. At the end of the day it's still only just a videogame that's kind of disappointing.

About VR, I think that also was overhyped somewhat, I wouldn't call it a 'fail' but so far all the games for it are basically gimmicky bitesize stuff that plays really well to someone trying it out for half an hour, but not really beyond that. The tech, while miles better than what was before also still has lots of issues to overcome. It feels more like a promise of something for the future than for right now, so I'm not surprised people find it disappointing.

No, at the end of the day it was a videogame wherein it's capabilities and depth were lied about up through day zero, and never denied nor tempered. That is the actual problem.

are there honestly people that think FFXV looks like a PS2 game?

Nah. Those people are being intentionally hyperbolic.

But I do think that people saying it looks like a mid last gen game are kinda serious. And that's just ridiculous

The game and everything surrounding it deserves more hate than anything else of late, but it was still a bit much IMO. 3 months and who knows how many tens of thousands of posts across dozens of topics saying the exact same things on repeat that were revealed in week 1 or 2.

Then there are those who comment venomously on the quality of the game that never played it, and that's BS as has been discussed in this very thread. You can tell whether a game is for you or not, but not comment definitively on it without playing. I stopped playing after only a few hours due to repetition. I may try again after a few more patches. I am no fan of the game, but the vitriol absolutely has been disproportionate to the failings of the game. The emotional connection required to make people echo the same few sentiments over and over and over for months is pretty damn strong.

I thought DOOm would be shit because of the terrible gameplay they showed at first. Happy to have been proven wrong though.

The reaction to the gameplay video was overblown too. Was it Polygon where the guy sucked? People acted as if he was committing a crime by not being good at using dual analogs.

Yes? XD To be fair, some of the promo screenshots SE released this year were truly terrible.

Jesus, people need to pull out a PS2 and remember what the games looked like. Of course, that would require they pull their heads out of their assessment first, so it's never going to happen.

Negatively the fact that PS4 Pro can't play 4k discs. I know GAF has a lot of box collectors but the majority of us aren't buying movies on disc anymore.

Positively for VR. VR came out like a wimper and isn't going to change gaming this generation. People can get $15 VR headsets for their phone and satiate their total desire for that short lived experience.

What about it?

We have an entire thread of people saying they won't buy For Honor because the SP might require an internet connection according to the box.

And we don't even know if that's true or what it entails.

No Man's Sky by a country mile. The way people are acting about that game is shameful.

Some people were acting absurd but a lot of the criticism and disappointment was completely warranted.

The pre-release hype was more ridiculous than the post-release backlash. I'd say the former is directly responsible for the latter.

Everybody was hyping VR to be a gamechanger, then the widest appealing one (PSVR) released and hype sizzled out.

I think VR has great potential but it won't hit a stride until the third or fourth iteration of it.

It is a gamechanger, people who knew better knew it wasn't going to be a mainstream succes in its current iteration.

In time it will. The hype hasn't died, it's just gotten maneageable. The tech is pushing forward. Hell, I see those damn Gear VR commercials constantly. They must be selling them.

I'm a huge VR believer and this year went exactly as I expected it would.

2016 was my 10th year as a gaffer, &, in that time, i think the whole no man's sky thing was likely, for me, the low point of this forum. while i offer no excuses for the failure of hello games to deliver what they said they were going to, there's responding by stomping something deeply/repeatedly into the ground, & then there's what went on here. it was sad & embarrassing to witness...
