Titanfall 2 should go F2P

F2P probably really wouldn’t help. Rarely do games have a huge increase in pop once its already been released. There are some outliners like CSGO, but for the most part they’ll keep the same number or gradually drop.

I like TF2, but it’s definitely not as good as the original. I got all the way to Gen 10 in the original. Now I only got to Gen 2 and I pretty much stopped playing already. It just doesn’t have that same magic as the first. It doesn’t help that the PC pop isn't that great either.

I am really happy to hear about it's success in November - I don't follow sales that closely, so that's a great surprise! It's been getting GOTY talk from websites, so December might look good too with Christmas around the corner.

Hopefully it translates into PC sales as well, as it seems to have the lowest pop across the platforms.

I bought it on PC and the numbers are certainly dwindling on there already. But if you stick to Bounty Hunt and Attrition, you're good to go for likely a good while still.

Just got it on PS4, and the numbers are super encouraging! I think this could be the year's Rainbow Six: Siege, where the numbers and support for the game grow over time. The word of mouth and critical love is extremely high, so I think it'll be just fine.

It's a fantastic game!

maybe microsoft should have sold a better console

Jesus christ that is bad.

For clarity, I'm talking about Bounty Hunt.

It had the same numbers as Attrition before they moved it to make way for Angel City 24/7

Other people are saying that moving the playlist icon killed it in their regions too.

F2P? No, Titanfall 2 will continue to dominate sales with price cuts as people get bored of Battlefield 1. This is isn't a Randy Pitchford game for pity sake.

This.

Also we're gonna see a spike on Christmas no doubt. I'm playing this game almost every day since launch and I've had 0 trouble finding games. Also it was no. 5 in the NPD last month. It's doing fine.

I think a starter edition could be a good way to introduce people to the game. And in January should be nothing that steals the attention of the game like releasing it with bf1.

Great game. It deserves way more. I hope it goes the way of Siege and will build up and maintain a healthy userbase. Especially for PC.

EU needs to get its shit together and play more Bounty Hunt (at least until they provide fixes for Attrition).

But yeah, f2p wouldn't be a good idea at all. No point selling camo when everyone wants to be pink or bumblebee yellow.

At some point people should stop blaming the release date. Despite all of the sales and promotions, charting on NPD and everything, the player population continues to drop like a rock. Earlier today (off peak but during happy hour) the PC population was 1400 people, globally. That's split across about a dozen regional server clusters and then split again across playlists. There are game modes like CTF that are just straight up dead now.

Maybe not F2P but something should be done.

Levelling shouldn't have been so confusing.

We will get a Co-op mode later (I hope it comes with its OWN progression model ala ME3)

I wouldn't mind daily challenges taking over "happy hour".

---

There are no challenges anymore for regenerating ~~ and you can't even represent your generation level without having it replace your callsign. I don't even think many people would even know what GX means if they haven't regenned themselves etc.

And not to mention... I can't imagine how much the average player HATES getting killed by a Pilot Sentry (why do they do SO much damage to Titans as well?)

---

I find myself having no real reason to play other than trying to reach a higher Win%. Getting to G10 doesn't sound as rewarding. There isn't even any Multiplayer Achievements/Trophies for it.

So I just payed full price for the game (because I said fuck it and bought digital) and dude, with the campaign and variety of content, it was worth it.

Bought it on PS4 expecting that PC would have population problems, which according to some in here it does, and haven't had any problems with player count after 20 or so hours with the multiplayer (which is so, so great, and I say that as someone that normally avoids multiplayer shooters).

I agree with the thread consensus that F2P isn't a good fit, and am glad to hear the discounts have yielded good sales numbers. I think the game is good enough where strong word of mouth will carry it forward, and Respawn's monetization strategy is welcome (gameplay stuff stays free, pay for cosmetics).

Any details on that? Hadn't heard that, but that'll be welcome.

I don't know what it is about it but I wish that game hooked me more like the first one did. The actual game was a huge improvement over the pre-release tests, but nothing that made me want to keep playing it long term.

Same goes for the campaign, it was great until it was time for you to actually shoot things.

No details at all, but they've hinted in the last stream they did. It's also been requested ever since it was included in the original so... they'd be stupid not to.

I am beginning for it to have it's own progression system because... the old Frontier Defense got stale after 3 starring each stage.

Just buy it you cheap bastards. if you want games to have fair microtransactions, no random loot nonsense, free maps, no season pass then you should support the games that do that. You have to put your money where your mouth is in these matters.

The Alpha Tech Test was the largest mistake they had made. It wasn't a very good demo to give people.

Yes. That Alpha was so bad that it turned many people off from the game (including me). I got it on sale, played the campaign and was blown away. I loved the multi in the first game, but it didn't click with me at all in TF2 for some reason.

Never played the first game but Titanfall 2 is one of the best FPS I've ever played. I'd be really disappointed if they threw in F2P bullshit.

Oh nice, will be welcome if that materializes but if the game stayed as is I'd also be completely fine with it.

Yeah and they don't need it to find success. Look at Rainbow Six Siege. Huge success for Ubisoft, almost everything is purchasable with in-game currency. If you make a game with longevity and compelling gameplay people will come and support it.

It is still hovering around 17-20k on Xbox One. Finding a match is faster and easier than any other shooter out there for me.
Yup, I got bored of Battlefield 1 by the long times and how tedious it was to join games, but TF2? Straight to the game.

Like someone else said, this isn't fucking Battleborn.

it doesn't have the kind of multiplayer i'm interested in, if they put out the SP standalone as a $20 download i'd get it

Free to play for what? Respawn realized how much value they lost for TF1 with no campaign and so created one of the best fps campaigns in years. Their biggest sin was partnering with a dumb as shit publisher like EA who cannibalized their own BF1 sales and barely impacted CoD but pretty much destroyed the TF franchise with their release schedule. TitanFall was released in March of 2014 for Xbox One. There was no reason they couldn't do the same here. Or even if they wanted to, they didn't have to release between two major FPS games that are larger franchises with better marketing.

I haven't jumped in yet, but isn't the player base hovering between 15-20k pretty consistently? With that in mind I'm confused why the OP would even feel the need to post the idea of F2P. I mean, I say this as someone who wasn't the biggest fan of the tech test (and was pretty vocal on GAF about it feeling like dumbed down COD-esque dogshit compared to TF1). But, this sky is falling stuff about the full release seems way too early and unnecessary. For a point of comparison: Evolve had 350 people playing on Steam last night. Three hundred and fifty. World-wide. That's after, what, 5-6 months of going F2P? I think this notion that converting to F2P mid-stream can save a struggling game is fantasy. And, as noted, the player base numbers for TF2 (thankfully) seem very healthy. I hated the tech test...but I'm going to jump in to the full game with an open mind....

You know what GAF, maybe get off your asses and buy the game and play it and increase the population. Get your friends on board, tell your neighbors, post flyers.

Game is great. Better then the first. The game is quick, intense, filled with skill and is just plain old fun.

This is not EVOLVED or BATTLEBORED, this game was released as a full, legit package giving you access to stellar SP and MP content. Everything works.

The only thing that doesn't work are gamers, who can't separate themselves from either other games or their opinions of negativity.

If we cannot reward a company putting out a Grade A product and can only shout about requesting it to be F2P, then there is no hope for us.

I always see at least 15K on the Xbox One servers, and sales seem to be doing well. So nope, Titanfall 2 should absolutely NOT go F2P.

I used to think that, but after talking to people at retail, TF2 did represent an alternative for people who didn't dig the BF1 setting and huge maps. People who didn't like BF1 did buy TF2. It was a different kind of shooter whose existence helped kill COD this year. EA gave customers two EA options and it worked. TF2 sales weren't the disaster I expected and BF1 sales were stellar. More importantly for EA, COD sales were terrible.

If anything, the Alpha test hurt TF2 more than the release date.

I can't recall a better game that has been so over looked. It's an instant classic, with none of the season pass bullshit tied to it.

Or, EA maybe should have not released it at -the- worst release window possible for a FPS game?

Many Titanfall players and fans said that they were fine with a delay of the game, I would have been perfectly okay with it. Especially after the beta that did a lot to put people off the game, what they should have done was delay the game to February or something and then have another two or three beta tests with changes implemented.

That way, you give people first some time to breathe from the absolute clusterfuck of game releases that was this year. Then, you can start slowly repairing the trust of players in you cause let's face it, Respawn and EA did a lot to damage it when people tried the Tech Test and many fans (me included) thought it was nowhere near as good as the original game. I still honestly do, the first game was close perfection of FPS gaming to me, I played the hell out of it because it was mechanically amazing. TF2 however changed so much that no amount of unlockables and achievements could help me get rid of the nagging feeling that overall the game was worse.

No, what they should have done was have some subsequent tests instead of just a single bloody, poorly received, one. Tests where they start implementing changes to the game after feedback and see what people respond the best to, let people see that Respawn and EA are willing to help the game get better and therefore get player trust back over time before releasing it as a much better product next year where the space is much more open.

I honestly haven't played as much Titanfall 2 as I did the second game in the same span of time. Loved the singleplayer, but the multiplayer just doesn't flow as well for me. I honestly hate the incredibly annoying crouch -> slide -> jumping mechanic. I hate that Hardpoint is a more boring mode without the A.I to keep the battlefield alive and attacking points behind enemy players more action filled instead of now standing silently on a space for 30 seconds. I don't like the new battery mechanic. Most of the new maps are poorly designed without the great flow, the best one now being Angel City, a remake. It just didn't click for me like the first game did.

I do think however EA owes Respawn a third game for fucking it up so hard as a publishers. A third game should be made, a third try to really set everything in its right place cause they got so much else good going on. A great campaign, microtransactions limited to cosmetics with no RNG lootboxshit, improved amount of unlocks (if not a bit slower and more annoying).
