Titanfall 2 should go F2P

The multiplayer should be free.

Honestly thats how I feel about most multiplayers though. BF 1, CoD, they all offer shit to but in the store and they keep doubling down on it. Might as well go f2p and bring in potential customers that otherwise wouldnt play the game.

I paid for the game. I would genuinely be happy if it goes F2P. At least that way I will be able to play something that is not Attrition.

Going F2P didn't save Evolve. Switching to a F2P model mid-stream necessitated core design changes that gutted the original complexity of the game and they had to strip out a ton of the content while they re-tooled everything on the fly. The plan was to re-add most/all the pulled content as they tweaked and re-balanced everything over time. The end result? Well, looking at Steam numbers, the player pop jumped up to ~15K for about a month and tumbled quickly. Just the other night, I randomly checked and there were ~350 people playing Evolve on Steam worldwide. It's much easier to find a game on Xbone to play the original version of Evolve (non-F2P, called "Legacy" mode on PC now). Basically, Evolve is on life-support on all platforms...but it's even worse on PC after all the changes kicked in.

Now, we can argue the biggest reason was because 2K fucked up big time at launch with the overly convoluted/confusing DLC packages that came off as greedy. And we can also argue that what happened to Evolve wouldn't necessarily happen to TF2. But...Turtle Rock is a very talented studio and they just weren't able to make the transition to F2P work in the 6 month time frame...and were unceremoniously booted by 2K when their existing 5 yr contract expired. So, the longer term plan to bring the F2P model to consoles is never gonna happen. And the irony is, the Xbone/PS4 versions are better off for it: Even if the player bases are sparse, it's still better than the ghost town on PC. Ultimately, F2P didn't help Evolve at all (other than that one month jump). The end result is a game that was simplified/dumbed-down and had content/modes stripped out trying to chase F2P dollars...but it died anyway, a shell of Turtle Rock's original vision.

If a game is designed from the ground floor around the F2P model it can, of course, work. But changing the entire design and monetization scheme after several yrs of development as a normal retail release is going to cause major problems without necessarily fixing the player base problem. I could *maybe* see Battleborn finding a second life as F2P...but TF2? Not a chance. The core of the game would be ruined and it'd die anyway.

I feel sorry for Respawn.

Whatever they do, they can't win.

First game releases, secure console exclusitivity, release a good shooter that is multiplayer focus. The reply from the gaming community "we want single player, we don't want to pay for maps, we want releases on PlayStation"

So they do that, craft a single player, offer free dlc, any purchases are for purely cosmetic reasons, release on all platforms.

Reply now is "go f2p"

Not enough. It's positioning between Battlefield 1 and CoD certainly hurt it, I'm not convinced it would have done significantly better at the best time of the year. I don't think the beta helped it at all and I don't think there was a push marketing wise - would they have decidated more money at another time?

Give it time. It has only had a patch or two. Respawn is listening and instead of completely wrecking the game with hasty buffs and nerfs, they are giving it time. Nothing is going to happen over the holidays. Hemlock, devotion and tone seem to be issues for many people and I assume respawn is looking at all the data in order to better balance the game. Few mp shooters are well balanced at launch but TF2 is really close to where it needs to be. Free maps, modes, titans and guns will keep ppl coming back. Population is pretty good on ps4 and judging by how many more people own ps4s there is no way it would be higher on xbox. It's funny you would even expect this considering how quickly most dropped The Almighty TF1 which you all so desperately want this game to be.

Shame, because you were doing a good job as an ambassador for this game with the OT and BH montage. I was looking forward to your NS montage (not happy about song choice lol)
this is nothing like Evolve, R6 would be a better comparison.

I know Respawn are gunna hit hard with patches, so I'm cautiously excited. I played the original every day (and talked about it every day at work) until the second season of the Ranked Chip... I got absorbed into Destiny, but I still played it once a day and loved it. I did all the maps solo on Frontier Defense (well, almost all haha).

I want a full session without anything to feel a bit off about, like I did with the original until aggressive SBMM ruined the game for soloQ.

As for the montage, I'm still working in it (though, not many people are using NS lol).

I was joking about the song choice btw, lol

If it went F2P the free titan better not be Tone.

Omg lmao

I'm finally getting around to playing this game and it's so much fun. This game and DOOM have so many things in that are so enjoyable! Really hope that whatever happens with it we will get to see a Titanfall 3 and they release it when it can actually stand a chance to succeed!

TF2's tech test really killed enthusiasm from the majority of TF1 die-hards like myself because it was pretty obvious the flow of the game was being streamlined and it essentially felt like "COD w/ Mechs". The realization that this was deliberate and not something that could be solved with a bug fix was a major problem. Word of mouth spreads fast and this definitely took the wind out of the sails from a pretty rabid TF1 fan-base.

Then they had a blase', unmemorable marketing push (someone in this thread mentioned the lame commercial with bad music, etc...) that really was pathetic compared to the marketing MS did for TF1...and then you throw in the braindead timing of the release? It's amazing it has sold as well as it has. Word of mouth on the stellar SP campaign no doubt has had a positive effect. I really want TF2 to succeed...but predicting a rocky road for the sales numbers/player base didn't require a crystal ball.

Titanfall 2 supports a diverse array of playstyles, some have different skill floors and ceilings than others but I'm sure that things like that will be tweaked and balanced in upcoming patches. Either way, we get the idea, your cousin, your brothers and your friends, hate Titanfall 2, and you're here to tell us all about it. Maybe we should keep discussions to our own views rather than anecdotal impressions of outsiders? It doesn't really add anything to the discussion.

Also, Evolve got awards prior to its launch, that's a little different to post-launch. The critical reception of Titanfall 2 has been resoundingly positive, the same could not be said for Evolve. Evolve had the exact opposite problem, really. It had a lot of early adopters, but those sales dropped off as consumers got bored of the game and prospective consumers saw the poor critical reception.

First impression during the free weekend I didn't like the changes Titanfall 2 made. Having the choice of a side arm or Anti Titan weapon with Titans having both Electric Smoke and a minimap that isn't helpful.

If it went F2P the free titan better not be Tone.

Why not? Tone is equivalently the best Mech in the game. Even if they "nerf" it, it's still got a thousand options that the other Mech's don't. Instead of "buff/nerf"ing they need to REALLY radically redesign it's loadout IMO.

Legion would be the next best one (given it's high damage at short OR long-range depending on your mode and how you pilot it) but it's no where near as bad as having a particle shield, missiles, dash, etc.

Well the player base is hurting. I am in US East and I cannot get a Free for all or Capture the flag game going at all during the day. Only at night after 6 or on the weekend. I can however get a Ctf match on Titanfall 1 almost any time of the day except for maybe 2 or 3 in the morning.

I'm part of the problem. I got the game for $27 at BB and only plan to ever play the single player. My sale won't help those numbers.

Are you on PC, Xbone, or PS4?

I don't know if they need to yet. Rainbow Six Siege managed to turn it around after a tumultuous start. I feel like Titanfall 2 should follow the same model.

Siege came out in a holiday season that wasn't crammed to the brim with amazing games every other week, and didn't have a lot of competition in early 2016, either. Titanfall 2 did and will.

Titanfall 2 has only been out for a couple months though. They are already giving us new maps for free, we can't expect them to do this. Free weekends at the most, I believe.

Edit: They should give us some overall holiday stats. Like 1 million Ronins wrecked while phasing, total population kills, etc.

Rainbow Six Siege came out in a very tough shooter market. Halo 5, Battlefront and Black Ops 3 definitely ate a lot of Rainbow Six's lunch at the end of 2015. It didn't help that R6S had terrible word of mouth out of the beta. It launched into a bad situation. It turned itself around thanks to the community who were playing the final game and gushed over it for months on end. If Titanfall 2 has a similar community I think it can find new life.

That depends on EA though. Ubisoft understand what they had early on and cultivated that market to success.

Huh. That's surprising. From what I understand player counts on consoles have been hovering in the 15-20k range recently. Judging by estimated sales numbers Xbone would seem to have the strongest player pop. But I'm gonna have to jump in soon to check for myself. Have u tried switching servers?

Side Note: I'm in Oregon and generally don't have any trouble finding games in TF1 during peak hours (tho some of the modes have dwindled dramatically, there's always attrition, hp, ctf, campaign, etc...).

And Titanfall 2 launched after Gears of War 4 and Battlefield 1, and came out in the week between Battlefield and Call of Duty. Not to mention it was competing with the likes of Dishonored 2, Watch Dogs 2, Pokemon, Final Fantasy, and Dead Rising 4.

And the thing is, Dishonored, Watch Dogs, and Dead Rising didn't even do that well. But those three, along with Titanfall, all had a lot of market potential if not for Battlefield, Gears, Call of Duty, and Pokemon absolutely devouring holiday sales. All four of those games should've been pushed to 2017.

And that's before mentioning the Q1 2017 releases. Right out of the gate, there's Kingdom Hearts 2.8 and Resident Evil 7. February has Horizon Zero Dawn, Halo Wars 2, For Honor, and Nioh. March has Ghost Recon Wildlands, Nier Automata, and Kingdom Hearts 1.5 and 2.5 HD.

Siege was able to recuperate in early 2016 because it wasn't a super competitive market in that first quarter. Q1 2016's biggest releases didn't really start until February with Street Fighter V and Fire Emblem, and SF5 wasn't exactly a huge success initially, either.

Maybe in late January or early February they should have another free weekend and have it coincide with a sale for $25 at the same time (was $30 for Black Friday and is $30 on PSN right now, so that seems reasonable).

I think that would cause a lot of people to jump in. I would. That's my sweet spot.

I'm loving these jokes.

FFA died in the 2nd or so week of the game. They pushed it to the second page. I should think FFA will come back to life with UI fixes.

I quite liked the mode, considering. I could see it becoming my main mode if Bounty Hunt dies.

I bought Titanfall 2 and play it. I would not play a f2p microtransaction delivery system with everything stripped out to be sold back at a premium. No thanks

Almost 19,000 on X1 right now.
Update: Merry Xmas. Over 40,000 on!
