Today I played Mega Man X for the first time ever

Firstly, yes, I know. I'm bad. I know. I've been meaning to play this forever, so when I saw it was released on the 3DS eShop today I don't think I've ever hit "Purchase" so quickly.

Anyway - as someone whose only Mega Man franchise experience has been the classic series, I gotta say: this game is fucking incredible. I'm surprised at how much it has in common with the original Mega Man games - obviously it's a little more subdued aesthetically, but in terms of what you actually do it's more or less identical. I don't know what I expected, but it felt comfortable after playing Mega Man 2, 3, 9 etc etc.

What I definitely didn't expect was how much the game grows the idea of progressing through the Robot Masters Mavericks in your chosen order. Going back to defeated levels to uncover upgrades with your newer powers is a great addition - classic series Mega Man definitely had those moments where certain weapons could nab you a life or an E-Tank, but this feels way more crucial, and way meatier. Moments like dashing up a cliff face to fight a secret miniboss for an armour upgrade, or sinking a boat to reveal a miniboss to be fought for a health tank... I really enjoy all these changes. Neat touches like Flame Mammoth's level freezing over after beating Chill Penguin are just icing on the cake (I wish more of the levels changed like this, really).

Furthermore, there's the way the game plays. Classic Mega Man is robust enough, for sure, but MMX is a cut above. The walljump and the dash make X a whole lot more versatile than young Rock, and the way those actions feel when combined together is something I never expected from a Mega Man game. Launching through the air with a dash jump to a higher path, or figuring out the extended walljump to launch over a frustratingly-perched enemy - moments like these feel damn good.

Best weapon name, right here.

Oh, the soundtrack kicks ass too. Armored Armadillo is a jam. I haven't finished it all yet - Sigma Stage 2 has been kicking my arse pretty badly. All the same, I already know this is one I'll be playing for years to come.

Thread is now open for you to berate me for sleeping on this for literally decades.

First off, I hope you enjoy the rest of the game. It's one of those that I never get enough of.

Secondly, you have admitted to having played this game far too late, and I hope you are willing you accept your punishment.

In my defence the only way I could have played this before now is on the Wii VC

and I skipped it because... er. I had other games to play. like that one Konami Famicom game with the baby

Oh god you made me check the eshop for it and there's just fucking Final Fight like I saw in Nintendo's website last night, so I assume you're from Europe? I bought a $10 card like a month ago just for this game because I assumed Capcom would release it the same week as MN9 lol.

But yeah reading your post is heartwarming, you sound as excited as I was when I played it as a kid. This game is BLAST, this and X2 are one of Mega Man's highest points and the only comparable thing after it woule be the Zero series, I'd say.

Here's hoping you keep enjoying every second OP
and that Capcom USA stops tearing me apart and releases it here too already because all we have is lame ass MM7

I told you man.

It's the best. I already talked at length about why it's so good and why it's my favorite game of all time.

Glad you like it though.

What matters is that you finally played this amazing game.

You gonna do the rest of the games? MMX4 at least. It's almost as amazing.

Almost. I think X2 is better than X4 though.

One of the greatest games of all time. I wish its remake (Maverick Hunter X) had been released on a platform other than PSP so it could have sold more copy, and for the rest of the franchise to be remade similarly.

I never knew people loved this game back in the day. I always thought people loved nes Mega Man games and didnt like the way the X games evolved from the Nes era. I was so wrong.

Both of them are pretty great. I mean, Coldman can't go wrong playing either one. I personally prefer X4 tho, yeah.

I have X4 and X5 on PS3, but I've been sitting on it until I played this one. They were like 50p in a sale.

Careful with X5. While it's not bad game by any means, it's where the lack of polish that plagued future installments started.

Mega Man X actually was one of my first Mega Man games, alongside MM2. It was such an evolutionary leap in the gameplay department tho. I remember being disappointed that you couldn't wall jump in any other MM game on the NES.

Lucky you.

Playing this as a kid was so confusing: on the one hand, it wasn't exactly like the classic series, and I found the animal robot masters a bit off-putting and not as cool as the classic robot masters initially. What didn't help was that my big brother didn't like it.

On the other hand, it was so freaking cool, and the soundtrack so stellar I couldn't help but play it over and over.

Last time I talked with my brother he actually told me he bought the game. I was like "I thought you didn't like it." Man, I felt so vindicated after all these years :lol.

What an absolute classic.

I sort of thought the X series was some edgy nonsense for a while until I started seeing tons of "MMX is the GOAT" sentiment. Now I've played it, it's like the smartest evolution of the NES games I could have imagined.

Ignore the talk of others being "Just as good" OP, none of the other games in the series are as good as what you're about to play. Mega Man X is the pinnacle of the entire mega man franchise.

My favorite game of all time. I loved Classic but it always felt a little stiff to me. X was so much faster and mobile with dashes and wall jumps while the new items like Heart Tanks and armor capsules forced the stages to become larger and more complex. The better graphics allowed the bosses to vary in size making them more dynamic and memorable. Finally, we actually got an engaging and involving story told with very few "cutscenes".

X1 is the complete package.

Why would you do this?

Firstly, yes, I know. I'm bad. I know.

oh okay just making sure you know

In all seriousness, it's pretty mindboggling how much thought was put into this game versus pretty much every other 2D MM game. Even top tier stuff like X4 or Zero 2 kinda pale in comparison as far as sheer attention to detail goes. I personally consider it and Resident Evil 4 to be the GOAT Capcom games.

I'm glad you finally tried it. It's the best X game by far in my opinion, as someone who greatly prefers the classic series and hates Zero as a character. Great soundtrack, great gameplay, great secrets, great package. I just wish the other games kept it up for me.

Dashing, Wall jumping, Dash jumping, and Wall+Dash jumping are probably the greatest movement mechanic iterative change ever seen in a videogame.

More than 20 years later and the level of speed and control is still one of the most satisfying in any game I've ever played.

Mega Man X is the 61st best-selling Capcom game of all time.

It's the third best-selling Mega Man game in the whole franchise, below Mega Man 2 and, suprisingly, Battle Network 4.

It sold better than Mega Man 3, Super Ghouls 'n' Ghosts and Street Fighter Alpha 3.

Why would you do this?

The PC port was actually pretty solid for the time. I remember mine coming with a genesis knock off controller that was actually quite good. If memory serves me right the lead programmer on MMX PC is the same person who did those god awful Mega Man 1 and 3 DOS games.

Its a pretty interesting port too, not only as PC ports of consoles games during that era were quite rare but it has a lot of subtle differences and changes.

Definitely the best Mega Man game for me and one of the best designed side-scrollers in gaming. I used to dust off the SNES while the PS3 was downloading the updates and play MMX while it finished. Most of the times I finished the game before the update was finished. lol

Have fun!

Hey, to be fair, I did say "almost"

And yeah, nothing really lives up to the near perfection they achieved with Mega Man X. It's a shame too, even if the other titles are still good in their own right.

Yeah that gamepad was the PC Fighter 6 that Krejlooc mentioned. It was a pretty good gamepad, and the port of MMX was pretty good overall despite some issues with the music.

quoted the wrong post, but it's ok because those YM2612 remixes rock lol

yes, the PC Fighter 6. You could get it either packed in with megaman X. As I said, I also got Super Street Fighter II Turbo at the same time because it supported it. I still have mine, actually:

And I have a 486 to run it on, too.

How is the SNES emulation on 3DS?

People who know better about these things may have different opinions on this, but I think it's great? I've got Mario World, Earthbound, Kirby's Dream Course and now this and MM7, and they all look great. There's an option to switch between a more screen-filling display and the "original TV resolution", and that last one is the one you want, because the games look wonderfully sharp.

The day I brought home Megaman X was so, so awesome. I also got Super Street Fighter II Turbo at the same time, because it had the PC Fighter 6 gamepad packed in.

Also, the PC Version of mega man X has SAVING.
This was the only version I had when I was a kid(was a sega kid). I remember seeing pictures of ride armor online and was confused why it wasn't in the pc version. I was also an idiot for a few months and didn't know you could blow up the cars at the very beginning and would always get stuck just blowing up the guns on the cars forever.

How is the SNES emulation on 3DS?

Pretty good, all things considered. There's even a pixel perfect mode that runs everything at native res.

The only minor complaint I have is that there's some sort of darkening filter in place for whatever reason, like with NES VC games. That aside, its great.

X is such a weird beast for me. As a standalone, I think X might be the best game in the entire Mega Man franchise, but none of the sequels in the X franchise are as good as the first one. 2,3 and 4 are ok, but all of the classic Mega Man titles are better than any of the X sequels.

As a little kid, beating the 8th maverick and having the music on the stage select screen change, accompanied by Sigma's giant bald headed grimace, scared the hell out of me.

Scanlines, maybe? I have never tried the VC on the 3DS. I don't even have one.
