Today I played Mega Man X for the first time ever

I haven't played MMX either. I know it's a classic and love the N3DS VC, though, so maybe I'll give it a try!

Pretty good, all things considered. There's even a pixel perfect mode that runs everything at native res.

The only minor complaint I have is that there's some sort of darkening filter in place for whatever reason, like with NES VC games. That aside, its great.
I haven't noticed any darkening filter. All of the games look perfect, especially in perfect pixel mode, which technically looks better than they did on TVs (since it's 8:7 rather than stretched 4:3).

X is such a weird beast for me. As a standalone, I think X might be the best game in the entire Mega Man franchise, but none of the sequels in the X franchise are as good as the first one. 2,3 and 4 are ok, but all of the classic Mega Man titles are better than any of the X sequels.

I'd say 2, 3 and 4 are still great games, though not the level of 1 (very few games are). 5 is pretty good, 6 is total trash. Honestly i prefer 7 over 6, as at least 7 tried (and failed) to do something new.

Mega Man 8 however is also a really strong title that sadly not many have played, i would check it out and say its probably on par with 2,3 and 4.

Scanlines, maybe? I have never tried the VC on the 3DS. I don't even have one.

Nah, not scanlines, the screen is just darkened for no apparent reason. If you quickly enter/exit the VC or home menu during a game, you can actually catch a quick glimpse of the game at regular brightness before it goes dark for some reason.

Like I said though, it's a minor nitpick and it really hinders NES games moreso than SNES on VC.

Might just be my favorite game of all time. Afterwards I went through a prolonged phase where all I did was draw X and Zero. Good times.

In a way I'm jealous of you OP. Wish I could play like it was 1993 again .

Have you played any games in the Zero series? While not as big of a jump from classic MM to X, I found the Zero series' mobility to be a huge addition to the series, to the point where MMX feels slow and sluggish by comparison.

For real? I've never noticed it myself. I'm trying going to the menu and exiting multiple times and I can't notice anything, and boy I sure hate it in NES games to the point I don't play NES VC anymore.

Do you have an XL? Mine's a regular n3DS.

when I saw it was released on the 3DS eShop today I don't think I've ever hit "Purchase" so quickly.

What the hell is this Nintendo of America? Japan's had the game for months, Europe has it now and it's nowhere in sight for NA? Get your shit together!

@OP - Congrats on playing one of the greatest games of all time. I've replayed that game countless times, and I can't wait until it's available to me on a handheld. Storm Eagle's theme is going in my head right now. Time to pull it up on YouTube.

I hope they release X2 now! Because I'm definitely excited to see play that and X4 based on people's excitement around these.

Apparently Japan is getting MMX2 next week. God damn, NOA is terrible.

quoted the wrong post, but it's ok because those YM2612 remixes rock lol

yes, the PC Fighter 6. You could get it either packed in with megaman X. As I said, I also got Super Street Fighter II Turbo at the same time because it supported it. I still have mine, actually:

And I have a 486 to run it on, too.
I'm sure I still have mine somewhere too, along with the Mega Man X disc. Also, that version of SSF2T was a-ma-zing, though whenever I played it with my friend, one of us would have to use the keyboard :P

They're releasing X2 in Japan next week and I believe the lineup Nintendo presented in Japan when announcing SNES VC included X1-3 so I guess is safe to assume we're getting the trilogy.

MMX is kinda tragic in the sense that the first game is a masterpiece and while a couple of others in the series are very good too, everything goes downhill after X4, only to regain quality in X8 but even that one isn't that good. So yeah try to keep expectations in check even if X1 is the second coming.

Also consider giving MM Zero a try once you're done. I think it surpasses X in some ways and is by far the most consistently good MM series IMO. So good.

For me, it's the greatest 2D platformer of all time and it ain't even close. Glad you finally got to play/discover it all these years later. :)

Playing and deconstructing Mega Man X should be a requirement in any game design or (theoretical) gaming history course.

Megaman X is one of those super rare games that are complete packages that deliver on every front. It is absolutely the best game in the Megaman franchise.

I'm jealous that you get to experience this for the first time OP. This was the first game I ever owned when I was around 3 or 4 and I still have it. Was also the first game I ever beaten. Fell in love with the way it looked and sounded. It's personally my favorite game of all time and I always take the time to play it once a month.

One attention to detail I always liked that people never bring up is when you're low on energy in Chill Penguin's stage and X is doing his heavy breathing animation, you can actually see his breathe. That always stuck with me for some reason.

I'm glad you know what's up.

I must have rented the SNES cart 10 times back in the days. It's been my favorite MM ever since (along with both PSP remakes).

Best SNES game of all time. No hyperbole. Infinitely replayable, super tight level design, amazing upgrade system, simple but effective plot. I love it to death and always will. Here's some articles I've written about it:

Why the boss design is amazing

Appreciating the final battle

Bonus: Can Mega Man X take his helmet off?

The other games are great as well, OP. X4 is my personal favorite and just as good as this one, but up until X5 they're all amazing. X6 less so, but still worth playing.

After X6 just move onto the Zero series though.

I paid $72 for it back in 1994 and my mom was pissed but I didn't care because it was so worth it. One of my favorite games of all time.

I always preferred MMX over all other Mega Man games, and I actually thought that most people felt the same way. But I've seen a lot of popular opinions say that other "X" games are better. I couldn't disagree more.

Superb game with glorious music. Seriously, the OST is out of this world, with Boomer Kuwanger having the best track. That being said, as much as I adore it, it was my first Mega Man game and after playing classic MM, I'd actually place most of those games above it in my personal ranking. Classic MM is definitely more my thing.

Make sure you get the Hadoken, if you can figure out how to get it without help you are a gaming pro!

there is no way you'll know what to do unless you ask someone
