Tomb Raider E3 Gameplay Trailer - March 5, 2013 release date

Is this game supposed to be before Lara became a explorer, she's way to whiny and doesn't at all show the courage and strong character personality of the old games :(
Sorry, I criticized parts of this trailer myself but these arguments sound just bogus to me...
She being unprepared to go through a LIVING HELL should make her a weak character? Really?
In that same circumstance most of us would be in a corner whispering, moaning and crying under some state of shock.
And she's supposed to be the inexperienced Lara, not the one forged in hundreds of adventures.

Also... "strong character and personality of the previous games"?
What personality? She's always been a cardboard character so far.

This looks like it could be a better version of Uncharted. Almost no shooting in the trailer, that is a good sign.

God I hope there's seriously not a "You got raped by a bandit" fail state. :lol

Looks good! 2013 though, man. 2012 holiday gonna be DULL

Ha, I like how only her pigtail is affected by gravity.

If cinematic gameplay is good for something, it's highlighting those little annoying details.

Said in the other thread, but I like the idea of a character who has a hard time killing people, even if it's just for a little while. That's one thing Uncharted could take from this game.

How can such a high profile game have such god awful voice acting? This woman needs to be replaced STAT.

I dunno, to me it looks more interesting than Uncharted.

Also feel like I saw slight hints of multiple paths in these action sequences.

Well, it's an origin story, right? So that desire for adventure must somehow... develop in her. Hopefully whatever journey she undertakes in this game is the impetus for continuing along that path.

Though getting shipwrecked and nearly murdered multiple times is not the best way to instill a sense of adventure in someone.

Then they are clearly forgetting to show off half of the features in these trailers.

Beside, I get it: this is supposed to be the young and inexperienced Lara, but is there a single moment in the whole game where she's not weeping, screaming or bleeding, if not all the above?
Cause it starts to look like some misogynist/sadist wet dream.

Apart from that, can't say I care for "character integrity", as the original the original has always been a very poor character.
Yeah of course it's not about the character here, let's be clear, but the point is that NOW the gameplay seems to revolve around this idea of a fragile weak girl who(supposedly) gets tougher with time.
Ok, whatever, that's fine with me and i don't really care, but what i care is that Tomb Raider, to me, was about exploring big areas, exotic places with platforming and decent puzzles, a sense of isolation and timeless-ness.
I hated the constant chatting in Legend and Underworld, i hated the stupid London, Venice, Tokyo levels, i hated shooting dozens of mafia or Yakuza goons, that was not unique or interesting.
The series DID need a reboot, but in what direction? Here i see what i've seen countless times already: try hard mature cinematics, scripted sequences without consequences (that get dull at the second run) and a whole bunch of crap that would've worked in The Last of Us, but i don't what is doing here, explosions, bullet-time.
I've played this game already this generation, a million times, i was hoping for something that would've picked up on the more unique elements of TR, as i said.

I'll wait for MS coinference, as i said, but with very little confidence, since even a 50-50 ratio would be fucked up, imo.

Also... "strong character and personality of the previous games"?
What personality? She's always been a cardboard character so far.
She was mostly a conduit for the player, in the style of Link or Gordon Freeman.

The SOUNDTRACK is really awesome,
even though the trailer uses a lot of stock sound effects.

Despite what everyone says, this game will be successful and will be worth playing.

Thanks for the gifs Plywood. Looks great.

My only concern is how it will take Lara to mature. I didn't really like uber badass Lara Croft, and am glad she's more realistic here. But she's getting that hell beaten out of her throughout the whole trailer. Surely Lara will develop into a tougher and more mature person as the game goes on, but hopefully that doesn't take too long. Can't be helpless forever.

Personally, I hope she starts kicking some ass starting with that rapist guy.

Looking pretty good, sure it's returning the favor and borrowing some from Uncharted but that's how products get better plus this is an open world game. Been playing Tomb Raider games since PS1 and though the voice is different its not bad, it won't bother me in the least bit. Also think people are way overreacting to the grunts, not that big of a deal. Perhaps simply because we haven't seen many action/adventure/survival games with a female protagonist.

March 5th is a bit of a bummer but I probably wouldn't of got a chance to play it this year anyways. Plenty of other products to keep us all busy in the mean time.

Scripted sequences will be fine as long as the gameplay in general isn't as linear as Uncharted. Hopefully that hunting part is actually throughout the entire game.

If this game was 90% deer-shootin', I might get it. As it is, it looks like this game is exactly what I don't want in a game. Taking the "cinematic" gameplay of uncharted to a whole new level. Of course, this is just a trailer, but I don't have high hopes for the game itself. Which is a shame because it looks amazing visually.

Looks fucking disgusting to me.
Scripted shit all over.
FULL of people, kidnappers, survivors, fucking people everywhere (goodbye sense of isolation and loneliness).
Bullet-time and even more scripted bullshit all over.
Awful voice acting.

The only good part was that snippet of her hunting the deer with the bow, what the hell is this? Is one thing to reboot, is another to completely shit on everything that made the series interesting, keeping only the idiotic elements (Like Venice in TR2, shoot down the Venice mafia).
They even had the balls to close with "i hate tombs", yeah, that's why i'm going bullet time on armed kidnappers to save my friends, instead of exploring mysterious shit alone?

Sorry for the outrage, i'll wait for the Microsoft conference with a little bit of hope, but so far i'm fucking disappointed, UGH.

My thoughts exactly.

I have no idea why you guys torture yourselves. Having never heard any feedback or participated on any forum for this game prior to watching this, I would have never known it was even an issue.

Well that's just you. It was my fist complaint since I saw the first footage, she wouldnt fucking stop talking and vocally reacting to EVERYTHING.

You guys see snippets of a 6-8 hr game and suddenly we know for a fact that for the entirety of the game, she'll be talking.

I have no idea why you guys torture yourselves. Having never heard any feedback or participated on any forum for this game prior to watching this, I would have never known it was even an issue.

I think the fact that people are annoyed with a 2 minute trailer says more than anything. She's really whiny and noisy in general.

I think this shows some promise.

+ The part where Lara was sneaking around with her hands tied behind her back really appealed to me. I like the idea of the stealth aspect being introduced at the very least as a result of Lara being vulnerable, and not some high-score chasing, or "I don't want to fight dudes right now" tangent.

+ The idea that she may have to set up camp, find supplies, get water and food, etc in order to progress is really appealing. It's a refreshing take on upgrades, again playing to young Lara's lack of experience in these situations (like most people have).

+ Some real nice animations.

+ If this is open-world, that'd be splendid. I do wonder though because of all the clearly scripted sequences...

+ And this may seem creepy, but I really appreciated the... uh... uncomfortable touching part? I've always been a bit nagged that villains are portrayed as thieves and murderers and tyrants, and blahblahblah, but almost never inappropriate towards women, in the way evil men are. That scene gives the universe a bit of verisimilitude, and really adds to the theme threaded through the rest of the game that this is Lara before she becomes some ultra-confident and capable superhero.

On the other hand...

– Way too much gore. It's cheap and playing to the lowest common denominator.

– I don't think it looks all that good? Too brown, nothing stands out, everything is real blasse and uninspired.

– Terrible voice work; on all fronts, from what I can tell.

– Can't tell if fun.

I am hoping they just went this route for the trailer. I think it is okay to have this sort of stuff in the game as long as there is good exploration and platforming in those open hubs and that is a large chunk of the game. They said there is gear gating. So I am hoping we get a better idea of what is in-store with all of that at E3. Though I am guessing the MS demo would be something like the trailer right? Isn't that more of a typical conference demo? I need to see the other side of this game.

I loved the cover reveal on Game Informer and the screens back in the day. But this in footage, with that voice, and those annoying "movie-like Uncharted" scripted scenes...boring. I'll probably pass on this unless I hear the gameplay is stellar and there's a lot of platforming/puzzles.

Also it's damn near comical how much she's getting hurt in that trailer. Every 10 seconds she's falling or getting tackled.

The animation still needs some work, but this is looking really promising. Glad they're gonna be working on it for at least another year.

Well, neither will you! :P

I get that angle, but there's a point where you need to sacrifice "realistic" in order to get what works in a game. A character constantly speaking in a whiny matter over any situation just doesnt work in a game, no matter how realistic it is.

Didn't do much for me, looks too cinematic and like it's trying hard to be Uncharted. I preferred this game when it was going to be open world and all about hunting and survival.

Somehow I never learn to not expect any real gameplay from gameplay trailers anymore. Gets me every time! Just show me 5 fucking uninterrupted minutes of gameplay. I'm not an idiot, these cinematic trailers do not get me hyped.

I was impressed, but the criticisms are very warranted. I think visually, it is ridiculously pretty. But the gore is really brutal- it feels sadistic at times.

I'm excited for the open world structure- maybe that bow/arrow will be used to hunt for food/survive in the wilderness, rather than solely combat? If there are heavily scripted scenes, maybe they'll occur as you progress in the world. I hope that exploration remains intact. I'm optimistic (and I consider myself a huge fan of the series...)

Kudos to The Last of Us shop- it is too perfect for words!

THE LESS COMBAT, THE BETTER.
