Tomb Raider is biggest UK launch of year so far

I can't help but notice that a fair number of guys on that list seem to hate all modern videogames. I guess that's kind of ironic then.

I'm glad that a game I like has sold well again.

Also the "UK market is bad this means nothing" defense doesn't really work since they've also compared it to previous Tomb Raider sales.

Yup. Hitman was like the 5th highest selling game over there for all of last year and that game tanked so hard that SE pretends it doesn't exist.

I guess the real question is - will TR hold or is it extremely front loaded. I'm guessing the latter.

My thoughts are:
-Will it have legs? Square-Enix tend to force the legs by price dropping within a few months of release (that said, if the people inclined to wait for this did so then it would be a second wind in sales numbers)
-How long will it hold this title (best seller) for? I mean Starcraft 2 is out tomorrow so it could be as quick as 1 week...(wings of liberty was no 1 when it came out but was the only new release in the charts).
-From the above I just noticed? Did Aliens come out on a Friday? If so then Tomb Raider had more days to make the numbers.

Forcing legs? Reducing the price isn't forcing legs. That's an odd thing to say.

It will hold it until March 26.

Tuesday.

Good news, glad to see it doing so well. It has definitely exceeded my expectations, that is for sure. Well made and very fun game.

Hey sales GAF, how is this selling compared to 2008, 2009, 2010 sales? Good to see stuff is still able to sell at the moment if that's the case. All of this gaming is doomed talk has been worrying me.

Did Hitman REALLY sell that well in the UK?

I mean, here in the US it pretty much disappeared without a trace.

Yeah but it didn't mean much. The market over there for most games is horrible, that's why I'm trying to say don't celebrate just yet unless specific numbers were given.

And of course it's the biggest launch this year. What else has come out for the mass market, Dead space and crysis 3? Those aren't exactly blowing the doors off in sales either.

edit: Oh yeah....Aliens hahahaha

Wait, Colonial Marines was the biggest launch of the year? What is wrong with this picture?

It basically means DmC and Dead Space 3 flopped, while NnK was hardly expected to ignite fires.

It will probably sell the same as Underworld in the long term. Maybe slightly less.

Do we have concrete sale figures for TRUnderworld? I recall something like 1.5 shipped first month or something, nothing else.

And if TR 2013 indeed sells as much or less than TRUnderworld, then I imagine it would be a disappointment. Sales decline is why they rebooted it in the first place (well I guess franchise fatigue too but whatever). Not to mention TR definitely has a much larger budget than the other 3 CD Tomb Raider games.

I hope it keeps being successful.
Reboot Lara totally deserves it, and as much as I love Nathan Drake, I'm more than happy to see him getting some serious competition in the treasure-hunter/adventure genre.

After playing it I thought for sure it would hit at least 4 million lifetime being multi-platform, big marketing push very well done besides some silly stuff developers were saying that most mainstream gamers never even heard about, good game with iconic video game character that people never really tired of, even her less than average games have sold more than they should have. Isn't TR Legend close to 5 million which this game should do more. This game deserves it, I enjoy collecting things on my own more than the main game, but it is right behind TR1/2 as best in series, sky's the limit for a sequel on new harware. Crystal Dynamics finally delivers been a while imo, was a fan of pretty much all there games on 3D0, but then the they were not to be trusted for a while, glad they are back.

Isn't Uncharted over yet anyway? Wasn't it meant to be a trilogy? Can't tell myself, never played those; can't stand Drake for the life of me.

I guess there's a large market for big, dumb spectacles with no depth and/or intellectual & emotional stimulation. No surprise there, obviously.

But I'm glad that some people had an enjoyable experience.

Not surprised, it's a damn good interactive experience. However, in my opinion the name Tomb Raider has no place on the front of the box.

It was cool to hate, people don't like change and when they found out it was going to be more action adventure than puzzle and exploration they just went NOPE.

It went in the perfect direction for a reboot, establishing characters and setting, hopefully the next one will have bigger tombs and more complex puzzles.

Yeah make it really old fashioned and dated and just like all the things they chucked out to make it a better game.

I really, really hope they do that.

Agreed. Great game and it deserves the success.

What? How is that change? Most games I played this gen were action adventure! If it went for puzzle and exploration, that would be change. It's the reason I didn't buy the game, most people are saying it's just like uncharted, which I've already played to death.

It's the biggest Tomb Raider launch since ever:
In fact, this new Tomb Raider set a new record for the franchise in the UK. The previous best was Crystal Dynamics' first game in the series, Tomb Raider: Legend, which in 2006 sold around half what the new Tomb Raider sold.

More records: the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of Tomb Raider set new week one records as the fastest-selling individual formats of any Tomb Raider release so far. The previous record was held by Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness, which released on PS2 in 2003.

But keep spinning. And no, the market there is not horrible for games (TR just proved it by beating the PS2 one), people who follow the EU sales thread know that UK is doing perfectly fine.

I've really enjoyed playing Tomb Raider, great game and it deserves to do well. I'm more of an Uncharted 2 person myself, but still had a complete blast playing TR. Yes, some things were a bit ludicrous, but I don't necessarily want to plug into a digital Dostoyevsky every time I click "load save".

It's disappointing that people are still riding the hate train because of the mess ups of Eidos' PR during the development of TR, but screw them. It's a phenomenal game and really nails what they promised back at the start of this journey.

Don't go blaming "hive-mind gaf", it doesn't exist. What exists is small vocal groups of haters for different things that somehow always seemed to be heard over the majority who like or are neutral on the subjects in question. But that's the way of the world, negativity always gets heard 1st.

Yup. Hitman was like the 5th highest selling game over there for all of last year and that game tanked so hard that SE pretends it doesn't exist.

.....that's not very accurate.

They're not that good at it then as Sleeping Dogs & Tomb Raider has Hitman related dlc

But the game isn't different. It's like tons of other games.

And it's not hating if I can explain my dislikes in a coherent and detailed manner.

Not to toot my horn... wait fuck it i'm tooting, but i was one of the few who said to give the game a chance and that this move to more action/adventure was probably a good idea since the sales of the previous games went down with every new installment, and that times had changed. Just to give it a chance before writing it off...
