Tomb Raider sells over 4 million copies worldwide

4 Million Sold...Failure to Square Enix. I'll never understand why they think they can get COD numbers with every game they publish/develop.

But anyways, can the next Tomb Raider actually be like Tomb Raider instead of Uncharted 2 with Tomb Raider elements? Please and Thank you.

One of the worst games this generation. Proof that marketing and a known franchise is more important than quality or originality.

whatever your opinion on originality, you can't seriously suggest that the quality was lacking. This was one of the most polished and refined games ever released.

I still haven't beaten the game, but I like it. I exceeded my expectations. Although, one little note in case they work on the sequel....no fucking multiplayer. Shit is horrible.

The only thing I would consider quality would be the visuals. Everything else was average to poor (narrative, voice acting, platforming & combat).

But I completely understand the appeal to some people.

It's polished, but it's all style and no substance. The game never challenges you. The "platforming" and puzzles are underutilized and braindead simple and the combat is overabundant and repetitive. The only time the combat really shines is in the few times you can stealth kill, but if you mess up once in those segments all enemies suddenly get x-ray vision and gps coordinates to your location and you can never got back to stealth for the rest of the battle. Plus the game is rife with action sequences that, while pretty, just have you pressing forward and jumping occasionally or doing a QTE.

The game is pretty, the story is awful, and the gameplay is the mediocre at best.

Not surprising and the most likely way of gauging somebody's response to the latest game.

Think of a game series you *do* enjoy and imagine it getting the Tomb Raider treatment (core gameplay removed almost entirely and replaced with combat) and then maybe you'd understand why there can be such negativity for such a polished game.

I know. That's why I added it as a caveat to the end of my post..

Yep. Bland, derivative mediocrity in an industry filled with bland, derivative mediocrity.

The reboot was everything that's wrong with the AAA gaming right now IMO - pretentious and crappy story/characters, lots of (mediocre) shooting, that horrible automatic platforming, useless XP bars filling, lack of challenge and handholding to a point that becomes annoying and offensive.

I'm really sad to see this doing well because with this being successful the Tomb Raider that I knew and loved is dead and gone. :(

Great game that was held back by a lot of mediocre design choices. Hoping this pushes them to release a much improved sequel, would love more.

Congrats, one of the best games this generation, and one of the most successful reboots ever

Going by that picture, a Tomb Raider game hadn't sold more than 3 million copies in 14 years. Seems to have done pretty good relative to the rest of the series to me.

This game obviously had a much higher budget and, unlike the last several games, a huge marketing campaign. Seems to me it didn't sell enough to justify butchering the franchise.

LTD it is probably tracking notably beyond 4 million too.

I wouldn't be surprised if in a year or so we hear about it being at 5 million shipped.

Maybe, maybe not. But the investment that Square Enix poured into the reboot will also affect the sequels they are going to release. Who's to say that Tomb Raider is not now a franchise that can sell 4-5 million copies every 2 years? Sure sounds like a good justification to change a series where the last game to sell about that level or better was in 1999.

Gah!

Cough cough, spit!

Too much salt in here, TR 2013 is my GOTY so far with how fun it is to play, which means more to me than narrative, and acting.

I knew publishers focused heavily on first month sales, but it's not often you can see the contrast.

5th March 2013 - Tomb Raider released

26th March - 3.4m sales worldwide

24th August - over 4m sales worldwide

So the first 20 days accounts for about 85% of lifetime sales so far (~5.5 months)

The atmosphere and tone overcame whatever other problems there were. I liked this game for what it was, but I would want the sequel to be different. I'm not sure if that's a good thing in the end. Plus, I'm glad they didn't alter any scenes and cave to nonsense.

Maybe if the older games had more budget and had marketing they would have sold more as well. Maybe if this game wasn't insultingly dumbed down it would have sold more.

4 million is outstanding. And it's deserved in this case.

Unrealistic expectation by SE.

If you sell over 1.5 million copies and your still not satisfied, the problem is with you. There's simply to many options nowadays and with money being tight you should be grateful.

Well deserved. It really is a great game. This and Last of Us are, in my opinion, the best this generation offered in terms of action, mixed with adventure, atmosphere, story, and main characters.

Both quite brutal, violent, and dark.

Happens with mega hyped games with no good word of mouth. People who fall for it, shell out the money day one, but the sales become non-existent after the first month.

Insultingly dumbed down games are the types of games that sell lots of copies.

Doesn't almost every game follow that kind of sales curve?

I personally got pretty bored with it and it felt like a chore to finish, but even though I wasn't liking it, I felt like it was a really well made uncharted style game with a little bit more freedom that I could see a lot of other people enjoying.

Really disappointed in square-enix's reaction to its moderate success.

It was very good I want a sequel, there were tons of ads for this though for months I defintely saw more ads for this game than Bioshock Infinite and The Last of Us overall, maybe that's why they needed it to sell much more plus the long development. It will be lucky to crack GAF's top 5 in Game Of The Year imo.

No campaign DLC, no co-op DLC, and a mind-numbing focus on multiplayer deathmatch as the only replayability didn't help.

Great game. Sorry if some of you fans didn't get the type of game you wanted though. Maybe next time :)
I don't blame people who loved it but it does honestly upset me that they weren't able to craft a game that could satisfy fans old and new. All the parts were there. It's like it was never considered a worthwhile goal in the first place, which is a shame, as it looks like it could have been done.

While this game is excellent, I sincerely hope that Square-Enix has learned a great lesson with this upcoming sequel: Don't make a game that's so enormously expensive & expect to make back a lot of money for you. It's really unnecessary.

Wait did you just post a graph showing how the reboot has already sold more copies by far than any other tomb raider game has in the past 14 years as a negative?

Oooooookay.

Again, the game obviously had a much bigger budget than those games and one of the biggest marketing campaigns I've seen for a game. It sold better, but with marketing like that how couldn't it?

If it had good gameplay I'd have bought it instead of rent it.

Never did finish it. Not a bad game, just not all that fun or interesting.
