I was initially disappointed, but I'm loving it now. Catchy AND moody.

B000159EZ6.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

After hearing the first single I was extremely disappointed. I bought the CD anyway, and it's grown on me like few CDs have. This was a total surprise, I love the entire album. Very different for PP.

B0001ZMCWS.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

I can't get enough of the New Pornographers, so obviously this works well with me.

B0001ZMWQO.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

I originally bought the "Darts of Pleasure" import and couldn't get enough. Soon after the LP was released and it's a lot of fun.

B0001M7P78.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Definitely not Brock's best album as a whole, but it has some really strong songs (World at Large, Float On, Bury Me With It, The View, Blame It On the Tetons, The Good Times Are Killing me).

Oh, Brian Wilson's SMiLE is incredible as well as Bjork's Medulla. Oh, one more that I just got: Stars' Set Yourself On Fire is REALLY good.

My biggest disappointment of the year has to be:
B0001P2IWW.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

It's not terrible, but Sha Sha is the better album by a long shot. Ben is still awesome live, however.

I've been pretty lazy with music this year. The only new albums that I've listened to are from artists that I know I like (Interpol, RJD2, MF Doom). This thread has had so many great ideas, I'm posting in it so I remember to go and see what I've missed.

Björk - Médulla

Nothing else this year has blown my mind really. A couple of good albums has but nothing on the level of Björk latest baby IMO.

I'm surprised to see someone list Within Temptation. Another Dutch band who gets less praise than they deserve. Although I hate the way they went with this album, the bit more commercial route.

On My Way was a huge disappointment, but for me the biggest disappointment was:
B0002IQJ14.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

After three amazing albums, Hot Rod Circuit decides to release this. At least there's one great song called Cheap Trick.

My list is pretty similar to fart's, but I'd add Stars "Set Yourself on Fire" somewhere near the top. I'm glad to see so many people listing Mirah, she's really fantastic.

At this point in my life, it's overwhelming trying to stay caught up with new releases. Most of the stuff I'm listening to is from years past. My most listened to bands of the year were Gang of Four, MX-80, Super Furries earlier stuff, as well as a ton of Brit-pop/rock (i miss it!).

As for this list, it's very work-in-progressy:

Ted Leo & the Pharmacists - Shake the Sheets
Fiery Furnaces - Blueberry Boat
Xiu Xiu - Fabulous Muscles
Arcade Fire - Funeral
Tie: Devendra Banhart/Iron&Wine - Rejoicing.../Our Endless...

Posting in this thread so I can keep referring to it in the future. I don't know where some of you guys get this stuff but it's cool that you can find some good music when mainstream stuff is pretty much shit nowadays (if you aren't into rap that much).

At this point in my life, it's overwhelming trying to stay caught up with new releases.

Couldn't agree more. I simply don't have the time or money to check out all the albums I'd like, so my purchases have to be pretty carefully chosen. There's an absurd number of bands I've missed out on hearing this year, and it's only going to get more backed up if I continue to focus on this. That said, I'm continually thrilled to listen to each of my top five picks and can't imagine having passed them up.

5. Animal Collective, Sung Tongs
4. John Vanderslice, Cellar Door
3. Death From Above 1979, You're a Woman, I'm a Machine
2. The Streets, A Grand Don't Come for Free

and...

1. Patrick Wolf, Lycanthropy

Musashi Wins!

FLAWLESS VICTOLY!
I didn't see this years best album, so I thought I'd add it:

American Music Club -- Love Songs for Patriots

B0002ZYDMO.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

The best American band re-forms and releases a critically acclaimed album? Oh yes, AOTY indeed.

God I love them. I need to get this!

No particular order:

antibalas~~_whoisthis_101b.jpg

Antibalas - "Who Is This America?" - Lefty political afrobeat from Brooklyn.

nomo~~~~~~~_nomo~~~~~_101b.jpg

Nomo - "Nomo - Afrobeat from Detroit; less political, more jazzy.

madvillainm_madvillai_101b.jpg

Madvillain - "Madvillain" - Best hip-hop album of the year? Why, yes, yes it is.

ATSIGT-150.jpg

Tom Smith - "And They Say I've Got Talent" - Filk music from the very funny, very talented, very, very obscure Tom Smith. If you've heard of this guy, give yourself a cookie.

And, last but not least (especially if we're going by image size):

CS158991-01A-BIG.jpg

Shitmat - "Full English Breakfast" - I'm not entirely sure how to describe this, but boy howdy is it ever some kind of incredible.

And an honorable mention to the Grey Album, which I'd like much better if Jay-Z wasn't so goddamned dull.

I suck at remembering everything that came out this year. Now, while I've liked Franz Ferdinand, The Killers, The Walkmen, and a slew of others this year, there has really only been one album I keep coming back to since its release:

The Arcade Fire - Funeral

Brilliant. Probably helps that I saw them live shortly after falling in love with the album and that they're part of the reason I'm with my g/f. Haha.

#2 (for me) would have to be Stars - Set Yourself On Fire.

Still really want to get the new Interpol album. Argh.

Top 5:

1. Arcade Fire -- Funeral
2. Stars -- Set Yourself on Fire
3. Vells -- Flight From Echo Falls
4. United State of Electronica -- U.S.E.
5. Sufjan Stevens -- Seven Swans

Second 5:

6. Neko Case -- The Tigers Have Spoken
7. A.C. Newman -- The Slow Wonder
8. Memphis -- I Dreamed We Fell Apart
9. Franz Ferdinand -- Franz Ferdinand
10. Pinback -- Summer in Abaddon

The ultimate guilty pleasure award of 2004 goes to:
The Killers -- Hot Fuss

Hey SSX, I enjoyed the Chewing Gum single, how's the rest of Anniemal compare to that?

Chewing Gum is basically how the whole album is. A collection of extremely catchy songs. So if that's what you liked about Chewing Gum then you'll really like the album. Heartbeat and Me Plus One are my favorite tracks overall.

I was going to start a new thread, but then I remembered that people had put a lot of work into their lists just after Thanksgiving. Does anyone want to change their order or add/subtract anything based on CDs they got for Christmas?

I'm toying with the idea of switching my #1 with my #2, since that Ulrich Schnauss record is SWANK. I've also gotten some albums between now and then that might make (at least) the honorable mention list...

Damn, I didn't buy a whole lot of cds this year. Mostly had stuff from last year playing.

Top picks:
The Blood Brothers - Crimes
Fear Before The March of Flames - Art Damage
My Chemical Romace - Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge

Biggest Disappointment:
Alexisonfire - Watch Out!

Eminem

goddamit, Griese!
I think I can rank them now.

1. Atreyu - The Curse
2. My Chemical Romance - Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge
3. Alexisonfire - Watch Out!
4. The Fire Theft - The Fire Theft
5. Fear Before The March of Flames - Art Damage

No order for now, I can't think that hard:

B00025ETIW.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

B0002XDODU.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

B0001HOYEU.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

B0002858YS.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

B000645UPA.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

So hard to decide. Here are other albums that deserve mention:

Sum 41 - Chuck
Franz Ferdinand - S/T
Action Action - Don't Cut Your Fabric To This Years Fashion
Denver Harbor - Scenic
Ensiferum - Iron

here are my top albums of 2004. In no order, because that would take forever.

so_jealous.jpg

Tegan and Sara - So Jealous
The progress that Tegan and Sara have shown is great since their last album. Partly due to this being their first 'real' studio album, and the addition of Matt Sharp during recording. It really shows that Matt Sharp was far more important to the sucess of Weezer, in what he brought to this record. The sad pop sound of this record is dead on, and the girls singing is great.

set-yourself-on-fire.gif

Stars - Set Yourself on Fire
Great follow-up album. Brilliant live.

funeral.jpg

The Aracade Fire - Funeral
The album grew on me, making it one of my favorites by far this year. The energy in the album was alright, but after seeing them live, I have a totally different view on the band. I hope their next album doesn't disappoint.

worlds_apart.jpg

And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead - World's Apart
While technically not released until 2005, we all have been listening to it, and it freaking rocks.

winning_days.jpg

The Vines - Winning Days
I don't care what the haters say, this is actually a very good album. Well crafted songs, such as Autumn Shade II show that The Vines are a pretty damn good band, even if they suck live.

ratatat.jpg

Ratatat - Ratatat
Brilliant mix album.

The more I thought about it, Ted Leo got bumped. It was a fucking great record, but narrowing it down to 5, it has to go. I agree with Banhart over Sufjan. Seven Swans was good, but man was it ever boring. "This Song is for Siobhan" is better than every song on SS. Combined.

Anyway...

B00023B1YY.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

5. Vetiver - Vetiver A beautiful, dreamy, gorgeous album. It was a perfect album to listen to on a warm summer day, and in fact, I spent many warm summer days listening to it. Many, many, many. I can't wait to see what they do next. And I'm still kicking myself for missing the Banhart/Vetiver/Newsom tour. I'm a retard.

B00029LOFO.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

4. Pidgeon - From Gutter w/ Love Yeah, holy shitting fuck. This album rocks so hard that it's not even funny. There's shades of death metal, dreamy pop, ska, punk, prog, it just does everything, and the hardest thing to believe is that it does it all right. The fact that this is their first album, and it's this polished, and this fucking good, bodes well for the future. Very, very, very well. Now all they need to do is play someplace that isn't San Francisco/NorCal so I can see them.

B0001ZMWQO.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

3. Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand So, when I first got this record, I listened to it an obscene number of times, somewhere in the realm of 100, within the first two or three weeks. I made everyone I know listen to and buy it. I played the ever loving fuck out of it on my radio show. Ten months later, it's lost a bit of that luster, but it's still an incredible record. It's catchy, it's fun, it makes me want to dance. There seems to be a bit of a backlash because it got so popular, but fuck those guys. These guys deserve all the praise they get, they're the real deal. Or at least this record (and the b-sides I've heard, "Van Tango!" <3) is. I'm eagerly anticipating their followup.

B00023B1LW.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

2. the pAper chAse - God Bless Your Black Heart The first time I listened to this disc, I was a tad bit disappointed. One of my friends said that I should give it another chance, and am I ever glad I did. It's a slow burner, compared to the manic attack that is the beginning of Hide the Kichen Knives. The more I listened to it shuffle its way through Congleton's fucked up brain, telling a wonderful, macabre story, the more it grew on me. The track "Your Ankles to Your Earlobes" is one of the most fantastic, catharctic songs I heard all year. This album didn't get nearly enough praise in my opinion, and it made me a bit sad. These guys are wonderful, and combine this with the US release of the What Big Teeth You Have EP and their split with Redwormsfarm this year, it was a mighty good year for these guys. They're doing a split with Xiu Xiu early next year. I'm pumped.

B0002KVUWK.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

1. Hot Snakes - Audit in Progress Yeah, woah, holy fuck. It's the aural equivilant of a punch in the teeth. Me, being of little faith, said to myself before this album came out, "how, oh how, could they possibly top Suicide Invoice?. Yeah, this is how. The rhythm section is way more prominant on this disc than their first two. The guitar work is just as ridiculous and awesome. The first five tracks are about the best album opening ever. I mean, I can't say a whole lot about this record... I listen to it, and it just kills me. I listen to it multiple times a day, and have since its release. If you haven't heard it, do it. If you have, listen more. This is rock 'n' roll. Thanks Speedo & Rick for bringing the rock in 2004.
