Top Gun: Maverick impressions from CinemaCon.

That One Republic beach song is great. Not totally cheesy but still very irreverent. Although it would have been funny to break out Playin With the Boys again.

It's not the kind of song that I would normally listen to, but I think it fit the beach scene perfectly.

160.5 million over the holiday, surpassing even the optimistic 151 million estimate, making it the highest grossing Memorial Holiday release ever:

Just saw it, what a ride! I went in blind so the last 10-15 min were a total surprise for me! I cheered and cried at the manly hugs.

This movie was awesome. Much better than Fantastic Beasts 3: The Secrets of Dumbledore.

I wish I could see more of Hangman dog fighting and kicking ass. He's too pretty.

Haha, this is so true. I was expecting to hear "this is red 5, standing by" when they were all about to start their mission at the end.
The more I think about it the more this is true. There is literally a part you could have added a voice that said “use the force roost”. I remember thinking that but forgot to say it to my friend after the movie.

I liked it, very, very good pacing. I thoroughly enjoyed the "mission training" aspect of it. I want to see a lengthy behind the scenes documentary on this movie. Also, knowing that so much of it is real, makes it more visceral and keeps you in the movie. There are no thoughts creeping into your mind "this looks like CGI", which alone makes it stand out from other blockbusters. You can tell Tom Cruise cares and that it's his vision. I love that. More and more big movies don't have an identity.

Saw it tonight. Was super fun. Though I was pretty buzzed to be fair so I guess take that with a grain of salt.

I went to see it last night with my wife. We both a bit skeptical of all the hype, and you know, when has a sequel ever come close to the original?

Fuck me, it was awesome. We both loved it. As someone earlier in the thread there was a bit of cheesy dialogue early esp. when the young crew enter), but it just gets stronger from there. Ranks up there with my favourite action movies I reckon.

Hope it sparks a renaissance of blockbuster no agenda bullshit movies that are just there to tell cool stories, give a great cinema experience and entertain (apart from Marvel movies, etc. which have done that for the most part, except you kinda have to be into comics/that world).

Saw it couple days ago. It follows the same almost exact formula as Cobra Kai lol, old man teaches young guns but with estrange son bit but then veers off when Tom had to do it himself which was fan fucking tastic.

Jesus Christ I loved this movie, but
Ain't no fucking way a F-14 gunna take on multiple Sukhoi 57's, the first kill made sense, the others though...
How do we know? Have any of these new fighters actually been tested?

oh yeah, don't forget the danger zone :p

Glad this seems to have been done right, will be waiting until it hits home screens but can’t wait.

This is a must in D-BOX. Shit felt like I was in the cockpit. WOW

Final 30 minutes my jaw was dropped

First time in years that I wanted to rewatch a movie the moment it finished. I only wish my city had a 4DX theater but I still had a blast on D-BOX.

What's the difference between 4DX and Dbox?

I watched it in 4DX and by God what an amazing time I had.

Just came back from it. Only Dolby Atmos, but it was exactly what I wanted.

Sure, the CGI in a couple of places was a bit too poor, and the plot perhaps a little too predictable (even when switching off) and cliché, but they're just niggles.

Watched it Friday night, Jesus, the nostalgia it brought tugged at heart strings. The movie itself was fantastic and thank god they stayed as much away from CG as possible.

In the way it was set-up it's believable, in reality the superior fighter would have just stayed up high and fired missiles from several miles away when the canyons ran out.

Just got back from seeing it with an old buddy and his kids.

Yup, can confirm kill. It’s awesome! Plenty of I remember berries, but doesn’t rely on them to tell the story. So many little throwbacks but not overpowering.

It’s not citizen Kane or anything, but just a great flick and absolutely lewd airplane porn.

Felt good just going to a movie without some super geeky nerd lore background or anything else and was just was there to kick ass in a fun and heartfelt way.

Also, man, Jennifer Connolly is still looking great. (Her throw back character is also awesome)

Pilots would be to blame. They likely thought in during the entire exchange that they were in the superior machine and thus had their guard down the entire time even after Mav tagged one of them.

Let's be honest, little thought was put into the enemy fighters. They knew, quite correctly, that we only turned up to see them get blown to pieces, with enough tension there to believe that maybe some of the goodies wouldn't make it back alive.

I mean, I'm not going to defend this movie and say it's a totally realistic depiction of reality. It's not, it's a well written, well executed, fun action movie.

That said, the quality of pilot and training is the differentiator in air combat. This can be seen in the very advent of Top Gun and it's effects on kill:loss ratios in Vietnam and a large part of how the F-15 has over 100 kills without a single loss.

EDIT: Thinking about this, an apt comparison is 4th generation F15/16 or F14's against the Teledyne Ryan Firebee, which routinely trounced the average pilot in dogfighting. One Firebee named "Old Red" survived over 80 encounters.... but it was blown up eventually by a better pilot.

I have yet to see this...but i just came here to comment of that 2nd weekend drop. I thought it was a mistake at first. How the hell did it do close to 90M like that is nothing short of amazing. Tom Cruise is going for that amazing hat-trick with this and both Mission Impossible movies. Holy shit!

The man is unstoppable.

I need to go see it again just to it really hits those BO numbers and knocks some capeshit out of the top 5 list if possible. Looks like it has to get just over 700 mill domestic to knock Balck Panther out of #5.

Mind blowing that it's second week 86 million is still far higher than Tom's previous highest opening weekend of 65 million (War of the worlds).

Yeah it's kinda crazy that this was his first $100 mil + opening weekend movie.

I was a huge fan of the original, it came out the summer after kindergarten and I watched it on VHS countless times. I could recite the whole movie word for word at one point. I became obsessed with flying and almost went to school to be a pilot after high school, I was accepted and had the paperwork to sign to go but backed out at the last minute. One of my sons is now the exact same age I was when the original came out, so I of course took him to see it and he loved it. I also thought it was great, so much to love throughout. I loved how they incorporated Val Kilmer, pretty much the perfect sequel.

Saw it Saturday, awesome follow up. Still think the original is better, but, this was a solid effort.
I think the original is better too as it feels a bit more effortless (and the chemistry between all of the pilots was a bit better), but even still. Not by much. Top Gun wasn't Top Gun when it came out. TGM had to address that it was Top Gun so it had to take it all seriously and balance perfectly. In that regard, its incredible what they achieved.

Both are absolutely great movies.

There was a lot...off about the pilot crew in TGM versus TG IMHO. Even more so when the TGM pilots are all supposed to be post TG graduates and served out on deployments...right? None of them really felt like real world top shot pilots, just older people acting like teenagers mostly. Contrasted against the TG pilots in the school from TG and the confidence and cockiness difference is paplable.
