Assholes will often justify themselves through religion. "Gott mit uns" in particular was used in heraldry all the way back to the Teutonic Knights. God help you if you weren't with the Nazis.

All I know is that they were called the Waffen-SS and were recruited by Himmler and Mufti Haj Amin al-Husseini who was granted Aryan status by hitler. They grew to 38 divisions during WW2 and a division has up to 20 000 people in it. So they were a large and successful bunch. Don't know much about desertion and mutiny but they were guilty of many war crimes and were Nazis.

That photo is just the Bosnians I think though.

Edit: OK.I read more about it and only 2 of the 38 divisions were Muslim, so about 42 000 troops. Not the whole waffen SS was.
