Transformers: Dark of the Moon |OT| - Bigger, Badder, Better?

No super long review but yeah;

Again ILM bring awesome special effects, bots move around awesome. Funny story, good action and great cinematography. Bay knows how to get people going.

3D was excellent. Like fucking brilliant. Ending left me a bit mellow though story wise.

Didn't even really notice it was long.

Best two scenes:
Sam getting picked up by Bumblebee and shoved into him when transforming. Also, when Optimus is swording everyone. Bam.

Also I noticed in the city battle, Bumblebee transforming into a car briefly to fight and use that for the fight, thought that was cool.

I agree with the TRS crew - there is no action franchise that has humor that is as completely off-putting as Transformers.

Also what was with the constant cut to blacks in this movie? Were those in the first 2? I can't remember...

I agree. I sat a little too close to the IMAX screen, need to sit further back next time.

Where the fuck is Armond White's review?

The 3D had some awesome individual moments but overall I don't get the huge praise.

What really blew me away was the sound. If you have a theater near you with Dolby 7.1 (you can check on their site), go out of your way to see it there. Frigging ear candy.

Saw this last night, don't really have much new to add, like everyone says the last hour is amazing and just one high after another. The first hour had alot of meh parts and the whole movie could proabbly be half an hour to 45 minutes shorter.

This was one wild ride and I'm sorry not only that it ended but that it didn't start sooner in the movie. The 3-d was also very very well done.

I didn't even mention that in my review, but that was so fucking poorly edited. It doesn't come off as "cool" or "suspenseful." It's just a confusing mess.

Meh. I was more impressed by Super 8's sound. Then again, I think my UltraAVX theater is newer than IMAX.

It felt like it was a movie trailer. So strange.

Oh god I fucking HATE cuts that go to a black screen in movies. Ugh, hype -1.

So weird, I don't even remember any cuts to black.

Also, everyone I advise you not to read any spoilers. I was actually surprised by the story and it made an impact.

Just got back from seeing this in 3D, my first 3D movie and i'm sold, plug that shit into my veins. although the gimmicky "papers flying through the air and the debris" effects were the best.

Phenomenal visual effects, the 3D was the star of the show but the sound was astounding, Bay done good!

Absolutely loved the '69 moon landing tie-in at the beginning

There were 2 very, very brief cut to blacks which were backed up by the sound, weren't intrusive at all imo.

I saw my friend's (obsessed) son watching a YouTube video titled "The last 10 minutes of Transformers Dark of the Moon".

I asked him why he was spoiling it for himself, and he deeply moaned "I don't know..."

There were many more than that, and one in particular was insanely intrusive:
Sentinel sets up the pillars, makes a comment about the battle beginning, it smash cuts to black and then suddenly it's nighttime and the entire Decepticon invasion fleet is hammering Chicago and clearly has been for some time. What the fuck, Bay?

It's an effects reel for the ages, but it's still a shitty film.

So $13.5 million? Not bad given it hasn't opened in all its 3D venues yet. Though it is down from ROTF (which was $16 million IIRC though that wasn't Tuesday).

There are plenty of good summer films you can see instead.

By all means please entertain me with your suggestions for superior Summer films this year.

This was THE Summer popcorn film for me.

I just got back and I had one of the most entertaining cinema experiences ever. I actually enjoyed every moment, even the stupid humor. The 3D was phenomenal and the action/CGI spectacle unrivaled IMO.

Having invested years and time in to this franchise and my favorite characters, events really did hit home. In particular...

Ironhide's death was a sad moment having spent two previous films with him and Que's (he should be Wheeljack damn it!) plead for his life was surprisingly emotional and I felt sorry for him. The only death I felt was too quick was Megatron's. Starscream's was quite funny as it highlighted his stupidity which is well-known to Trans-fans. Soundwave got what was coming to him.

Overall this film makes RotF its bitch. I also enjoyed it more than the first.

It wasn't perfect and there were questionable cuts and scenes being thrown in where they shouldn't be given the pace at the time, but I won't hold it against Bay.

Absolutely superb.

Absolutely agree. DOTM made me feel sad and scared for giant heaps of metal, something ROTF completely failed to do. Massive spoilers seriously don't read this
Ironhide's death, Que's execution, Bumblebee about to be executed, and Optimus' arm getting ripped off were pretty emotional to me. I thought Optimus was going to die again.

Oh, and one thing I had a problem with:
Herp derp I'm Optimus getting stuck in wires for 30 minutes.

Pretty semantic argument there. Did you count how many of the dozen cut to blacks had sound in the background?

I only counted 2
both when the attack on chicago began
so the rest I didn't notice at all.

holy shit = 70% saturation for 3D last night. It will dillute but that is crazy good in this current marketplace.

edit: By saturation I mean that is what percent of audiences saw it in 3D. Not technical specs, ha.

The terrible scenes when the
robots killed the gov't workers to cover it up? The pink transformers sitting with the girl at her table before it kills her father?
So, so bad.

I don't think my screening had the bulb to Bay's specs. It was pretty dim, which was annoying.

after sleeping on it another scene I fucking loved was
It was a shot that showed Optimus' sliding across the street and just stabbing the hell out of any decepticon in his way

so yeah that and the
Bee transforming grabbing Sam and then re-transforming
are the two scenes that stand out to me.

And yeah the audience I was with was very into it, they cheered when optimus came on screen the first time, and for the second spoiler. (hell I cheered for that).

It's because Tuesday previews were 100% 3D only. 2D screens didn't open up til midnight. That means it was 50-50 3D vs 2D at midnight.

well my friend wants me to see this with him and he paid for my ticket (at Lincoln Square!)

so I expect my eyeballs to melt from the insane 3d picture

So can someone tell me if this movie is GOOD? unlike the previous 2?

Did bay finally listen?

I thought 1 was good. 2 was trash.

If you didn't think 1 was good, you won't think this one is good.

TF2's action was just boring as fuck, other than the Forest scene.

Yeah. TF3 definitely has the best fight scenes. Especially the last few sequences... goddamn.

QFT.

And let me just add: Ken Jeong's scenes were totally bizarre and offputting, not funny at all. This guy just grates on my nerves in every film he's in.

The forest scene was great. Which reminds me, dd Bay deliver with the action scenes in that he PULLED THE CAMERA BACK A FEW MILES?

Next time I go to the theater I'm stealing a few pairs of glasses so I can rig up a set of clip-ons. Wearing glasses over glasses isn't comfortable and usually ruins the movie.

Rolling stone gave it no stars it seems.

I think I'm going tonight. My local theater has the sound way to loud for the size of the theater. I'm probably going to end up leaving with my hearing gone.
Sam's boss, John Malkovich, appears in orange makeup that makes him look like an Oompa-Loompa, spouting jokes that die on his tongue

So true. Actor was completely wasted in this.

I was looking forward to seeing this all week till I realised I have no one to go with me

Caught an episode of Transformers Prime last night during one of the rare moments I watch cable. Why in the fuck is Bumblebee a mute in that as well? He didn't even use mass media audio clips to speak either, just a beep boop herp derp version of R2-D2's vocab. The whole thing confused the shit out of me, with half the bots seemingly inspired by the film designs, and half of them ripped straight out of Transformers Animated. And I can't believe in the era of shows like The Clone Wars, Hasbro thinks CG that barely surpasses Beast Wars is acceptable.

Rolling Stone definitely has one thing right, these movies are just too long. Bay could cut so much from all the movies to make them much better. The DOTM plot is promising, but too many times Bay goes ADD and spends too much time on pointless side scenes.
The whole building falling down sequence was the only Chicago part I didn't enjoy. Could've been cut in half.

Yes, the action scenes are among the best I've ever seen in a film. The last hour or so had some truly spectacular moments.

Btw, for those who have also seen the film, what did you think of
Lazerbeak? I was really surprised at how much of a little badass he was. The whole assassination thing was truly dark and disturbing, not to mention bossing the humans around. I also laughed at when he appears in Africa and just shoots the vulture out of the sky as he lands on Megatron's arm. :lol

Man I really hope the franchise can continue. So much they can still do.
The Cybertron scenes and seeing it appear and disappear in space had my fanboy mind in a spin. Incredible scenes and CGI. Absolutely incredible. Made me actually join the bandwagon calling for a Unicron storyline, or at least a prequel during the war.

You need to watch Transformers: Prime from the beginning to really get an understanding of how underrated it is (though it did get Emmy nominations). A truly fantastic series and much better than TF: Animated. I have enjoyed just about every episode up to a certain point (I'm a bit behind now).

This one was the best one out of all of them in my opinion. If only more movies could do 3D as good as this and Avatar.

John Malkovich was one of the highlights for me.
