Tribes Ascend overhauling weapon unlocks, ~7x faster (why aren't you playing yet??)

There's the Community thread over here, but I thought this might be worthy New News that would interest some people who aren't currently playing.

This game has seen massive post-release support, but this update takes the cake. Maybe it's enough to pull in the people who were initially turned off by the slow unlock speed? It completely overhauls the weapon unlock/upgrade mechanic so that you get stuff faster and can spend your Experience on other, more meaningful stuff. Like, for example, the 27 new weapon variations.

Also: New maps, lots of weapon balance tweaks, and more. All for free of course.

If you haven't played the game yet, why not? It's seriously one of the best multiplayer shooters I've ever played. And you can play it for tens of hours completely free if you want.

I put $30 total into it for Gold back in the beta, 6+ months ago, and I haven't come close to using it up yet since there's so much variation I can get by simply spending Experience for free.

I've been patiently playing away, waiting to unlock the cross-bow. Enjoying the game a lot, but I'm not nearly skilled enough to build up enough exp anytime soon.

This is fantastic news for me!

Classes need to be free and weapons need to be cheaper. Otherwise its the best F2P game out there. Better than the Valve F2P offerings (IMO).

So are the weapon unlocks going to still cost an exorbitant amount of XP? That really kills the whole feeling of progression taking you upwards of a month just to get one new weapon.

But new maps and variations is always a good thing. Tribes is quickly replacing TF2 as my go-to multiplayer. It's just so freaking good and addictive.

It's so fast. Even the juggernaut can rocket along if you're good at skiing. That sensation of movement is just so, so ace.

Serious Section 8 vibes are pushing me away. I have no previous experience with the Tribes franchise.

Section 8 didn't have skiing. To put it succinctly, holding down the space bar causes you to become frictionless, allowing you to slide down hills and build up an absurd amount of speed. The game is fast and not much like any other shooter out there.

Unlike Section 8 the series has minimal hitscan weapons outside Shottys, pistols and the Sniper rifles. Also unlike Section 8 the game doesn't have autoaim crap and you can 'Ski' up to 300miles an hour, the game is super fast.

What a sad gaming history you have.

I've played shittier titles while ignoring even better games.

Oh, what the hell. It's free anyway.

300? Goddamn, I've yet to break 250.

So if I'm reading this right, they're only removing the XP cost from upgrades but you still have to spend 100-150k XP per weapon? Which would normally take weeks worth of playing anyway?

Some weapons will still cost exorbitant amounts of xp like that, but there are also plenty that cost much less from what it seems like.

Wow, update sounds great. I stopped upgrading weapons when I realized it was putting me further away from new weapons and perks.

I only played the beta and a bit of post-beta and yeah, those weapon unlocks were ungodly expensive. To have a successful F2P game, you really have to make it so the player WANTS to buy things instead of forcing them to feel obligated that they need to purchase things in order to stay competitive.

The only F2P game I've actually spent money on. A truly terrific game, and this update hits all the right notes with me. D3 will continue on the back burner while I give the new maps a go, and smash out some further upgrades for my Tech (I'm assuming there are some in this patch?)

I guess now I'll have a stack of unused XP too, so I might unlock the few remaining classes I haven't got and try them.

Bravo Hi-Rez.

The best F2P game out there if you ask me. Love the game. Played Tribes 2 a bunch, but that was forever ago. CTF isn't as fun to me, but I put in an hour or so into TDM every day. Spent $50 in it. Not in a rush to buy more, but I could see myself doing so further on.

Out of curiosity, anyone have an idea of the approximate player count?

In game? 32players per room. Overall? No idea, they had 800K afew months back. I live in Australia an I instantly find a match within 1 or 2 seconds, so I guess heaps of people play.

I'll second this. Another Aussie here, and there is almost zero waiting time to get into CTF matches. It's great, leaves SMNC and F1OnlineTheGame for dead in that regard.

/edit: god, I'm reading the forums regarding this patch, they're as stupid as Blizzard forums, if not worse due to the niche competitive nature of Tribes.

I meant overall but yeah it seems to be doing well. I just hopped in for my first games before the servers went down. Holy shit this is a fun game, and its nowhere near as difficult as I would've expected.

I downloaded this game last week and having tons of fun. Jetpacking and skiing is the shit.
Although I only play TDM for now, I will try the CTF mode soon.

It's not very difficult as there are many roles you can take on. Playing like the pro's is another story though, watching some of the matches is mighty impressive.

I've you're new to the game or the series, definitely try out some defensive roles to start. If you unlock the Brute or Technician (both cheap unlocks with either exp or gold), you can help out your team immensely and still get tons of credits and exp by simply defending your generator, repairing turrets, sensor, and generator, upgrading defenses, etc.

I'm pretty terrible on offense but still have tons of fun simply defending.
