You mean the same Reddit that is supported by tencent? Yes China's internet censorship is fucked up but that's no reason to stop globalisation. Tencent isn't China, just as Google isn't the US.
Well, as Joe Biden would say: "......huh?, well.....I.....wha?......yeah, man."
Any idea how this will affect discord?
They were early investors and I think they are still involved. They also invest in Reddit. What’s China’s stake in the company?
So what is this big list of alternatives to Unreal Engine? It wouldn’t do anything to those developers because tencent doesn’t own Epic, nor Unreal Engine. And even if they did, every developer that uses Unreal Engine would have a big list of alternatives to move to. They could also make their own engine.
It wouldn’t be the end of the world, and it wouldn’t have society altering effects. To believe so is pretty laughable.
It doesn’t matter though, because the US government was too short sited to see that tencent is as big of a problem as WeChat. For now...
Development on the engine grounds to a halt and the majority of the industry is using that same engine 10 years later because it's 'free'. Graphics never get better. After giving it some thought, it would be absolutely hilarious for Trump to declare that the DoJ will not prosecute people for pirating the Unreal Engine and other Chinese IP. They have infiltrated and stolen from US universities and corporations for decades - I think it is only fair.

That's what I'm saying. Everyone will find an angle to do awful things. Probably the CCP has a justification that makes sense to them.
While "reeducation" camps are the limit for Americans, I bet that there are many other countries that find what the US does way beyond the line. For example putting illegal immigrant's kids in cages.
None of it is good. Nobody really has a moral position to point fingers to anyone else.
So what is this big list of alternatives to Unreal Engine?
If you'd find an alternative that has all the features and tools that yoi need for your game, once you have the game running on an engine, porting it to another engine is a colosal task. Small devs that have used a relevant ammount of their budget, would not beable to afford it.
And yeah, for an indie company, developing an engine is almost a suicide. Some do it because they want to make an engine and spend many resources on that. I is definitely not worth it for a small or medium-small team.
Hopefully, it won't come to this

Stop the conspiracy theories and face the truth. We are not living out some hyper woke, hyper partison article from Vox, Vice, or The Atlantic. This has nothing to do with China wanting Trump to win. Since Trump started being tougher on China, especially post pandemic, more countries are speaking out on what relying on China has cost their country as well. More and more countries are trying to rally together and stop China from taking over other countries through spying, intellectual theft, or through financial means.
UK calls on EU for tougher approach on China
Germany and EU must get tougher on China
Also, who said anything about Trump being smart? The man has reasonable intelligence and he has always had this vision since his early days on television (80's-90's) when speaking out against American companies selling out to China or the dangers of doing so.
No, I don't want a lost of game engines, I want a list of altrrnatives to Unreal Engine. Alternatives comparable to the performance, fearures and tools to UE4. I asked because you may find a couple only and they are still way, way behind.List of game engines - Wikipedia

There’s quite a few there. Companies change software all the time. Game developing companies included. Sure, it’s a pain, but it’s not impossible.
And just one more time, to clarify. IF tencent was banned from making transactions with the US, that doesn’t mean Unreal Engine would be banned. At all. Tencent doesn’t own it, so I’m not sure why you keep arguing something that isn’t a reality.
Be interesting if Tencent was gonna buy WB Games.
Well, as Joe Biden would say: "......huh?, well.....I.....wha?......yeah, man."
This thread is filled with the dreaded realisation that the Anglo-Saxon world is no longer the centre of the world. The political move discussed is a reptile brain response to the complex issue of a multi-polar world where not only US wealth dictates the terms of engagement.
As citizens of small countries, we have always have to relate to the giants in the playground. It is interesting to see how hard this new world is to accept for the Anglo-Saxons that have only seen the immediate post-WWII world.
What did tiktok do that pissed Trump off so much anyway? The only familiarity I have with TikTok is the Perfume posted some wonderful dance clips on the service at one time

We are very lucky that the USA, with all it’s flaws and mistakes, is the one making the calls and being in charge.
You don’t want a world in which China or Russia can do whatever they want.
Why do people say "we"?We hate Tim Sweeney now?
So strange that you seem to have a Dr. Disrespect meme for everything...ministry of state security on suicide watch

You are right that we have been lucky that has been the case. Throughout my upbringing, the US was seen as the light on the hill. Recently though, the US is acting out of fear instead of playing chess. Fear is a very bad foundation for decisions.
Valid point, but that's the problem. There needs to be manufacturing over here and elsewhere around the world. Maybe it's triple+++ the cost but we would pay it knowing we're not giving money to China. The more the OPs mentality is accepted the closer we can get to a more just reality.
How is this cheating again ?When you can't beat em, cheat. Typical.
South America with some investment on infra-structure could easily substitute China. Take Brazil, for example, $1 US Dollar equal R$5 (Reais), minimum wage here is around R$1000, so $200. That may not be as cheap as China but it keeps things locally in the Americas and at much lower costs than manufacturing in the US.
Brazil has the raw materials, Brazil has the land, Brazil has the working force, Brazil is a very good option geographically, it "only" requires the technology and the opportunity.
So exactly like Google, Apple, Microsoft, Facebook and so on operative systems, devices and apps but but instead of sending all your data and giving access to camera, mic, gps position, watch its screen, what do you type and so on to intelligence agencies and ads companies from USA and some western countries. It basically takes all of your data on your phone and sends it to a server in China without you knowing. It’s massive spyware.
I'm one of them, not kidding. I'm working on a GMS game for Switch and if possible I'd like to release it some day in the future on next gen xDAt this very moment, hundreds of game developers are feverishly trying to get their next-gen game up and running on GameMaker Studio
Intriguing, but don’t have some pretty strict economic regulations?
Going back to the racist and xenophobia claims again. So what is the name of your account over on Reset?Tencent... Are they responsible for any great games?
He's only doing this to try and gather a few more supporters, I think, starting to mix his racist deal with xenophobia again... Hope it doesn't work too well! (sorry, overseer, have I said the wrong thing here?)
Anyway, I don't really think Tencent do much beyond pedal addictive games stuffed with microtransactions, right? So, I don't mind
Methinks you don't know your history as well as you pretend to.
Please elaborate - I am honestly not sure what you are hinting at unless you assume I am younger than I am.
