Trunks is useless (DBZ Thread)

Trunks' biggest moment out of his child/teenage years is obviously his introduction of him sweeping in to kick the shit out of Mecha-Frieza. That big buildup to Frieza's return, ultimately him being bodied by this completely new character (who we learn later is Vegeta/Bulma's kid.). I remember first watching his introduction as a child and going, "This character is fucking amazing!" ...then, as the Android/Cell saga went on, he just seemed to be yet another DBZ character in Goku's entourage that was just 'there.' Nothing he's done since killing Frieza seems worth mentioning.

Then Buu Saga came around, and yes while the friendship with Goten's humorous, and Gotenks at the time was cool, it was still a whole lot of boring undeveloped shit, coming from Trunks when looking back now.

What do you think?

Everybody was useless.

Especially when poor writing reached nirvana and every human is useless. I think, in the dub, tien or yamucha even said "we're just here, but we can't even do anything". Like the biggest slap in the face to people who watched these guys in dragonball.

Trunks was crucial for the defeat of Cell, him being mortally wounded in front of Vegeta set him off and allowed for Vegeta to counter attack cell while he was fighting Gohan. If it wasn't for Trunks, Cell would have never been beaten.

Up until then, he didn't do much aside from crying, going ascended with Vegeta was cool and all but meh. History of Trunks was pretty damn good though.

Everyone was useless by the same metric.

Except for Goku, obviously.

These two posts sum up everything wrong with the series, particularly after Namek. Toriyama clearly phoning it in just to keep the series going during the Buu Saga was especially bad--I don't think I've ever been able to read/watch it straight through.

Ironically enough, Trunks, Tien, and Piccolo are my favorite Z warriors, and the Android/Cell Sagas are my favorite in the series. XD

One of the biggest flaws in DBZ is that anyone is worthless except Goku, I wish that DBZ ended at Gohan taking down Cell, it was perfect and showed a great Gohan taking the leading role.

But then Bu saga and GT happened...

Trunks story was one of the greatest moments in the series anyway.

Trunks best moment was when we first saw him and he destroyed Frieza and his dad.

Other than that, he was pretty useless (although not as useless as the other non saiyan fighters)

So much this.

i always felt a lot of the minor characters got a lot more of the spotlight in the Cell/Android saga than they did in the Namek/Freeza saga.

I think the OP is refering to the fact that after his big Freeza defeat when he comes back to the present he's only one real battle with focus was with Perfect Cell.

While Goku was out of action it basically fell to Piccolo and Vegeta to carry the action. Each of them gets three battles. One against one of the first Androids, another versus a member of the second set and one against cell. Then Trunks finally gets one after they're done. Even in the final battle when Cell comes back he insta-kills him. Preventing him from helping out in the final battle.

He did stuff with the time machine and Dr. Gero"s lab but that seemed more "Krillan" type background stuff as opposed to big battles.

That was like maxing out a character's stats and then playing New Game+ on easy mode at that point. :/
Hehe, I guess that was always the problem for all the characters that are not Goku. For some reason they all had the potential, but it was always Goku who got there first. They just spend all their time trying to catch up.

Yeah, Trunks had a big intro and I was hyped to see what he could do. Didn't do much fighting after that I'm afraid.

Tien was able to keep Imperfect Cell 2 down for a while by repeatedly using the tri-beam. Didn't do a lick of damage but it was a good for stalling the fight. That's better than nothing.

I'm almost impressed they were willing to allow him to do that.

They set him up to establish just how dangerous the androids were, then to job to them and cell to make them look incredibly dangerous, he played his role in the plot perfectly

People say the buu saga ruined the story beyond repair, but I say it was the time traveling bullshit that started with trunks' arrival.

I'm probably the only DB/Z fan that enjoyed the series all the way through til completion (and enjoyed GT to an extent though if I wouldn't mind GT being remade with a new storyline. None of that Black Star Dragonball crap) or at least it feels like it when I see these threads.

I didn't realize until a year ago or so that Goku never really killed anyone in DBZ himself til Buu. Kinda funny thinking about that now lol.

I also hope Teamfourstar goes to the kid Buu Saga, wouldn't mind seeing how they handle it. :D
