Tusk: You never go full walrus

Spoilers ahoy

So I searched and didn't see a thread for this movie so I thought I would make one.

First off I'm a huge Kevin Smith fan.


I just got done watching this Tusk and the all I can say is meh. I listen to Smodcast and Kevin Smith talked a lot about this movie, maybe to much. It was aboot what I expected, I guess, but I can't help, but think the editing hurt it and the "comedy" distracted from what could have been a legitimate body horror flick.

Justin Long's walrus body really made no sense, because he obviously had way more mass as a walrus, but what ever.

I think the Johnny Depp parts were mostly a waste of time and felt like filler.

Also, the end doesn't make any sense. When the "One Year Later" came up I assumed they would show Justin Long some what restored, but instead he's still a "walrus". I don't feel like they sold the mental transformation to that extent.

I would like to hear more opinions.

I enjoyed the movie and I understand what you're saying. I think it could have been better with few tweaks. This will be a future How Did This Get Made episode for sure.
 
That movie was so weird and disturbing. Nothing else really like it so I gotta give credit to Kevin Smith for making a very original movie at the very least.

The guy who played the crazy dude is an insanely good actor tho.

This movie was made for Michael Parks and he was awesome, except for the Johnny Depp parts.
 
Depp should have been cut from the movie to keep the tone on point. There also should have been more play leading up to the walrus. Parks telling creepy stories was amazing.
 
I felt like an asshole because I paid to see that movie. And by the time Johnny Depp's faux-Borat sounding ass appears, I honestly wanted to stab my brain with a silly straw.

We'll always have Chasing Amy, at least...
 
That the ending doesnt make sense is kinda the point.

It was thought up by two guys smoking pot and laughing about a weird ad in a newspaper.
 
Shame, the first half was actually quite disturbing, the feeling of being trapped and helpless was really well done. The second half was just silly and the effects weren't good enough. Johnny Depp giving another kooky phoned in performance.

Well, Depp ties into the next movie, so they weren't going to cut that.

I don't really think Kevin is interested in coherent three act movies at this point, at least besides Clerks 3.

I'll always love Kevin Smith for putting Michael Parks' talent on front street. Giving that guy two really colorful characters and tons of screen time after a career of killing it in bit parts.

It doesn't sound like Parks will be with us too much longer, sadly.
 
The movie gets dead serious at point and then turns into a comedy with the Johnny Depp character.
And then they just leave Justin Long at a zoo(?) in the end.

It's a wild ride.

Also it was nice too see Haley Joel Osment in movies again.
 
I watched this purely because of Smith in the hope that it would be good but sadly as with red state it just didnt do it for me. Absolutely love clerks, mallrats chasing amy, dogma and jay and silent bob but his new path of films are just to put it blunty, shit
 
Maybe it was because I was drinking, but I loved this movie.

I absolutely would never want to see it again, because part of its charm is the shock factor, something that loses effect on a second viewing. Seeing Justin Long as a Walrus, with that really eerie suit, was all kinds of unsettling. But it's the marriage of that and so many well done elements that made me enjoy the movie.

Depp killed it in that role and I actually thought he did better as the detective than he did in any of the nonsense he's done as a leading role in the past few years. The humor it brought was absolutely necessary for the film, otherwise the film borderlines horror. Instead it manages to find a niche in just being a creepy film.

Michael Parks is a ridiculously good actor and it adds so much to the film. Going from that crass podcast intro into him just talking, jesus what a transition in tone. Smith knows what he's doing; the movie solely exists as a "lol why not" film to mess around but he still manages to do it with such finesse. For example, there are explicit scenes to mislead the viewer into thinking the girlfriend is cheating with the podcast friend, but right before they find out their friend is in trouble, for the briefest of moments, you witness a shot of the bed and can see that they were sleeping on opposite side (pillow on foot of the bed) hinting that their relationship is platonic. The dude knows how to world build even in a film about a guy turning into a walrus.

Having not heard the podcast that inspired the film prior, I think the finishing touches was hearing an excerpt of the podcast during the end credits. After the sappy music finishes, the podcast plays and they outline how ridiculous the film is, even mentioning the sappy music at the end. It just makes it all the more amazing because it reveals that level of self-awareness that went into the film. Ultimately I'm amazed because nothing like this will likely ever exist. Because no one else has this much hollywood pull and just doesn't give a crap. Closest thing to this is probably Grindhouse or the Machete movies, and even those serve as action movie parodies. This is just...bizarrely entertaining.

But ya...how did he poop as a Walrus? :-|
 
I enjoyed it for what it was. I agree the Depp parts were overly long.

It was a combination of body medication (cutting off his legs and fusing his arms to his body) and a suit, presumably made from other dead people.

I think the idea is that at the end where he had to 'become' a walrus to beat the crazy guy in the walrus-fight, his mind finally snapped.
