Walking Dead - I watching the premiere during Halloween a couple of years back and really enjoyed it, I read a lot of the comic books and enjoyed the show's first two seasons. Then the end of last season came and it was very clear it was not the same show as it's inception. It's a shame really because I like zombie, apocalyptic themed shows. I have not watched any of the most recent season, and by the comments in this thread it's best not to even bother

Boardwalk Empire - I watched 2-3 episodes and I just couldn't get into it, I wish I could because I like that era in time and personally I think it's been underutilized in media, but the show itself just seems so dull

The Wire - before you eviscerate me, I do plan on finishing it, I am about half way through the 4th season and it's just not as hot as the first 3 seasons. I do plan on forcing myself to finish the show to the end but I haven't watched in 6 months because the 4th season just didn't have the hook, perhaps I need drunk McNulty in order to be fully entertained

Keep watching then. :P

It's amazing because you can actually mark the rise and decline in quality with the whole Glen Mazzara ordeal (2nd show runner). A lot of people here stopped watching into the 2nd half of the 3rd season.

I challenge anyone here to recall when season 2 actually became fucking GREAT. The people who stopped watching before the halfway mark of season two
missed the group finding Sophia in the barn as a zombie and Rick putting her down by shooting her in the head.
Easily one of the most powerful moments in the show and the point at which Mazzara took over.

At that point, he was interviewed and literally said they would start ramping things up and burning through story. Season two was all uphill from that point because you had
things with Shane finally come to a close, you had the farm get overtaken by a herd...a lot of shit happened and it ended in a really awesome spot.

Enter season 3, and the first half of that was pure gold. SO MUCH happened in those first 8 episodes with the group trying to
take the prison, running into some asshole convicts and Rick immediately burying his hatchet into the head of one of them, Laurie giving birth and then dying, Rick losing his shit, the introduction of the Governor (a character which they would later take a big shit on), the attack on Woodbury (which was awesome)...
so many good things...and then BOOM! Mazzara leaves and it's all been downhill since then.

This season is the worst the show has ever been, and I can't see it getting better anytime soon.

Call me crazy, but I've always thought the Walking Dead was poor. Season 1's pilot was incredible. But every episode after that was very hit and miss. It MAYBE had like one or two other decent episodes. Granted, it was a very short season. But it's not like every episode was good. And the finale for Season 1 was terrible.

First half of Season 2 was awful, with meandering plot, and idiotic characters driving the plot by their own stupidity (you pretty much loathed every character). It didn't help much, that much of the episodes were driven by character/dialogue and non-action, when you hate the characters.

We see a reversal in Season 3, where the first half was really great (probably the best the show had been since the pilot). But then the second half of Season 3 was a complete abomination. It fell apart at every level, and imploded by the end. First half of Season 4 was okay. Had some good moments, but nothing great. So far the second half of Season 4 has been all over the place, and pretty awful.

So yeah, this is a show that has never had focus. They've never been able to write a complete season where it comes together. It's no shock that, writers have continuously quit, showrunner's have been fired or stepped down, and production has had to be stopped. There is some serious problems behind the scenes.

Walking Dead after season 3. I thought the show started great, but then the
CDC
part was beyond ridiculous
NO ONE LOOKED AT THE COUNTDOWN CLOCK BEFORE THE VERY END?? Come on!
and could totally not have happened at all and the show would have gone on just fine. That was strike one. But I kept going. Season 2 started out great too. Back in the outdoors, new characters, etc. Yeah... they stay put for a while, but I thought they did a well enough job about it, I didn't find myself too bored. And the whole drama about
Rick finding out about Shane and who knows who the baby's father is was actually really well done.
In fact, I was pumped at seeing this conflict go on for a bit and take some twists and turns, when suddenly bam, strike two
They kill Shane right when his character's plotline was getting interesting.
.

Then season 3 started out with a slaughter of a bunch more main characters for that shock value, as a result of characters doing shit people wouldn't normally do just to force the scenes in. Still, I stuck it through until strike 3,
they build up this huge drama about this final battle with the governor, and he lives at the end so they can drag it on for who knows how much longer.
By the end of season 3 it had become a chore for me to watch. I always like to see my shows all the way through, but I decided that would be it for me.

I finally gave up on Walking Dead about 20 minutes in to the premiere of the current season. I just couldn't do it anymore. I always thought it sucked but I was for some reason sucked in and for some reason halfway into the premiere I just realized I don't care anymore and deleted the episode.

I did the exact same thing with Boardwalk. Went 2-3 eps, while I thought it was well done, there wasn't anything really bringing me back to continue. A year or so later some of my buddies who are big fans talked me into continuing it. And it really ramps up after that and just keeps going. It's an amazing ride and one of the best shows on TV right now. Do yourself a favor and keep going, it's a treat.

I did the same with the Wire as well, haha. Season 3 ended on such a high energy level, that season 4 and 5 took me months to get through. Don't get me wrong, they were effing brilliant, but it was harder to come back to those coming right off season 3.

Heroes: Midway through Season 2. Should have actually have become super heroes rather than bitch about family shit.

Dexter: Twice actually! Dropped it season 2 or 3. Picked it up again for the Lithgow season, and then never watched another episode.

Homeland: Dropped it after the Islamic Terrorist Ninja Assassination Squad showed up in season 2. That combined with Dana's storyline were some big ass warning signs that they ran out of good ideas.

The Office: Just stopped caring about any of the characters after a while.

Wish I would have dropped HMIYM, but I can't stop. Stupid Jason Segel and Cobie Smulders for being on that show.

Agents of SHIELD - dropped it after episode 10 or 11, should have done it much sooner.
Boardwalk Empire - watched the first season and it was slow/boring, decided it wasn't for me
New Girl - show went to complete shit after Nick and Jess hooked up

Californication - quit after like season 3 i think
Dexter - Quit after the terrible season 5 and bullshit ending with the plastic sheet. Made a good choice.
Weeds - dropped this after season 4 i think it was, just wasn't the same

That's three Showtime series, damn.

I'm really close to dropping the Walking Dead. It just keeps getting worse and worse. I'll probably stick it out til the end of this season and if it doesn't improve drastically I won't be back for the next season. Oh well.

God, most of them.

Walking Dead sucked early and hard
Same with Agents of Shield
The Following was ridiculous and better shows have a similar theme (Hannibal for example)
New Girl, as others have said, got really dumb lately

This topic could apply to most sitcoms after season 4 or 5. How I Met Your Mother, New Girl, Big Bang Theory, The Office, Friends, Frasier. Basically, around season 4 or 5 most sitcoms decide to stop being funny and instead "explore the depths of their characters" or some crap; listen, I don't care that Barney is a womanizer because his pet dog got run over when he was a kid. Or that Dwight Schrute is insecure about his abilities to be branch manager because of what happened with Angela. Just keep being funny and work in the character development within the context of the humor.

That's the number one reason why I drop shows like the ones above. They get all up their own ass with self-important pathos instead of being entertaining. That's what made Seinfeld so great; the characters were cynical, self-absorbed, and never grew. That was the point of the show and it stayed funny and fresh for almost 10 years. Parks and Rec also balances out humor and character development really well.

I usually hate procedural too, but Hannibal's is very much on the side.
Besides, in s2 they want to do multiple episodes arcs, which should work better.

How many episodes were you in?

I was 5 episodes into it. I will give it another shot at some point. Going to finish True Detective and series 4 of Boardwalk Empire first. Oh, and Treme season 3.

Bones: Fun at first for the characters, but then they start doing too much manufactured shitty drama (I love you, I don't love you, now I love you but you don't love me, lets get married, I'm already married, we don't trust each other lets break up, lets get back together and get married, oops the one time we had sex you got pregnant now we're together, etc.). I also hated when the good intern form the beginning left so they replaced him with several (all shitty) interns that rotate in and out. I cheered when they actually killed one of them!

Community: Not sure why I stopped since I still liked it. Just haven't watched it at all the last two seasons or so.

Castle: I think I just got burnt out by watching too many by-the-numbers crime shows.

Justified: Love the show, just haven't watched the last two seasons or so (too busy I guess).

Mentalist: Another crime drama I got sick of. The Red Jon mystery was so stupid after a certain point. I did watch it again when they finally resolved it after missing 2-3 seasons and I felt like I hadn't missed anything of importance (other than the two side characters getting back together).

House: Stopped watching it for a few episodes during the last season, but tuned back in for the episodes leading to the finally. House was such a great character at first, but the lack of character development was pretty terrible. LOVED the season where he goes into rehab and actually does show some growth, but then they just throw that away halfway through the season after that. Ugh.

Dexter: Holy shit did that show lose my interest like no other! First two season were a lot of fun, and there were good moments in the others, but the side characters just got too annoying and Dexter started being less and less interesting.

...Yeah, I had way too much free time when I was in college, haha. Now I just pick a handful shows and binge watch on Netflix if something good comes out there.

Smallville, the show kept building up hype that Clark and Doomday was going to have this big showdown, nope Clark just picked up Doomday and slam him into a shed.

Heroes, I got bored and felt that the show was nothing special.

Lost, it got moved to Sky 1, but I was getting bored of it.

American Horror Story. The first season fell off hard. Then the second season was fucking awesome. And the third season started off awesome and flew off a cliff.

I was 5 episodes into it. I will give it another shot at some point. Going to finish True Detective and series 4 of Boardwalk Empire first. Oh, and Treme season 3.

5 episodes is where it started to click for me, there about.

Don't want to pimp the show or anything, just point out that the procedural stuff is fairly tame and secondary, as the show goes on.

It is very rare for me to stick with any TV show after about four seasons. Even the good shows tend to eventually overstay their welcome and become a bit boring. There's only so many ideas you can apply to a show.

Sons of Anarchy, stopped at the start of season 4.

Burn Notice, stopped at the end of season 5.

Vikings, stopped in the middle of season 1.

Da Vinci's Demon, stopped mid season as well.

Borgias,stopped after season 1...

And probably a few others...so many shows,so little time,if I would watch everything I like out there,I would be sitting in front of the tube for like 8 hours a day lol.

mainly just comedies when they stop satisfying me - the us office, parks & rec, how i met your mother, community, californication. pretty easy to stop watching.

i rarely drop dramas because i feel i'm already invested. that said, i dropped the americans in s1 because it wasn't the show i wanted it to be. too actiony. oh and the newsroom because i gave up hoping it would be good and it started just being okay instead of unintentionally hilarious. s2 of homeland killed my interest in the characters such that i couldn't motivate myself to bother with s3. i guess i drop a few dramas actually.

That's a shame... War of the Damned is one of my favorite seasons of TV ever. I was less into the politics and more into the characters and action though.
The thing is I like the characters, especially the devious ones like Lucretia and Ashur. All the Romans are delightfully cynical as well. Even Crixus and Onomaeus had their moments. I just wanted the grand story told better.

To tell you the truth, Spartacus himself was always the weakest part of the show. The main thing driving him was revenge for his wife. Then they went and gave him a girlfriend and spent all this time trying to explain that no, he really is still miserable and fueled by pure rage. He wasn't that interesting to begin with and they took away his main motivation to keep up their T&A quota.

Walking Dead when I realized the game had better writing than the show.
Enjoyed it for 2.5 seasons but got tired of the characters and the ridiculous headshots.
