Twitch.tv updates their UI to be more "social"

Did you know Halo invented the FPS?

Some people are getting it at the moment. Not a fan since the new following thing only shows top 5 streamers that you are following which means popular streamers get more popular. It's still day 1 so it might change real soon. I consider twitch "gaming" discussion considering millions of gamers are using the site

Definitely a case of the big get bigger here. Also why would they hide who you follow on a drop down over what they have now? The UI already sucks and this just makes it way more cramped and ugly.

Twitch UI has been very poor for a very long time. This is a step in the right direction. Easier to navigate, and looks a lot cleaner. They also have some new twitch crate thing. Not sure how I feel about that, but my knee jerk reaction is crates are getting old and randomized rewards with the possibility of duplicates sucks (not to mention you can't even do anything with the dupes at the moment).

In regards to the follower bar, you can hit show all and it will expand the list out. Otherwise they would have to move the friends list somewhere, but then it just looks like wasted space if you don't have many followed streams. I think it's fine.

This UI is an improvement. Everything loads up quickly.

Not really. Still loads as quickly as before, maybe even a bit slower for me now.

Would rather have the options on the side though, my screen is wider than it's high after all...so I guess it's made for mobile users?

I hate that it only shows the top 5 follows. Fix that shit.

edit: actually you can click load more and that fixes it, but still, they should show more than that on default

It's fixed. Hit "Load More" and see the rest of your follows.

Liking the new update, this is significantly better than the huge waste of space that was the old Twitch front page.

The UI has never been a problem, why do they keep changing it? The real problem is the streaming aspect, they just pretend like it needs no improvement.

Good to see Twitch becoming successful enough to now follow the trend of fixing what isn't broken and ruining everything! :^)

It's not about the UI not being a problem, it's that they can keep people more engaged with their platform if they make it like Facebook.

Ugh, Twitch. I don't like it, but I might just need more time to adjust.

The worst thing about Twitch these days is the pop-out mini player. I've never understood why websites do this. If I scroll or navigate away, I'm doing it intentionally, and looking at something else, I don't want to see the video for a sec. Is it possible to disable this?

Also annoying, the needless notifications "x has gone live, want to watch?", messaging and friend systems. Feels like the whole thing is getting bloated with pointless features.

I love that they have the browser-full screen mode though. So much better for me, usually, than either real full screen or the standard size.

ya its ehh.

slightly off topic cause this was added awhile ago, but does anybody kno how to turn off picture in picture when you X out of a stream? i really fuckin hate it.
i X'd your stream fuckin close the window why do i need to X twice so dumb.

Twitch needs to stop running so many goddamn scripts! Feels like everytime I watch something I have more and more to let through noscript.

Probably the delay

That's a fair complaint, but I don't think they will ever go back to not having delay. IIRC they switched away from that model for performance reasons. Delaying the streams also enables them to add quality options so they can reach more people.

It feels like they hired too many people, and since they need to work on something every day they keep moving stuff around.

There are other things that should improve, and to be honest its been years of the same few streamers being the most popular ones while not being the best ones, but most changes to the site seem to just promote the people in the top spots while burying everyone else. It feels a bit stagnant.

Probably the delay
Depends on the stream, and there is also an option to lower the delay which some streamers don't use.

Some streams I get as low as 7 sec, where others I get 13/14. And everything in between. Still worse than what it once was, but it's "ok" I guess.

I hate that now when a streamer is broadcasting their playlist that it shows as "Live" in the "Followed channels" section to the left. Before the UI change they had a separator denoting what is live, what is a playlist, etc...

A screenshot I just took, some of these are actually live, and some are broadcasting a playlist, but all displayed the same.

That's pretty shitty. Haven't noticed that though since none of the streams I watch run playlists. How does it display their status when they host another stream?

Using the site is so much more responsive. Streams load super fast, navigating the menus is snappy. They layout changes take some getting used to but overall, just for the performance gains, this update is sweet.

It's not about the UI not being a problem, it's that they can keep people more engaged with their platform if they make it like Facebook.

Based on a survey I got from them a couple of months ago, it seems they are trying to expand to non-gaming content. They were even mentioning encouraging more people do daily vlogs that they can share with twitch friends. Seems like they want it to be a social site where people are broadcasting their hobbies, cooking, eating, watching tv, sharing news to their twitch friends. Trying to make it more of a community, not just a game streaming site.

The UI changes seem to be directed towards that. I have no idea if any of this will work though. But it was clear from the survey they want to move away from strictly a "gamers" site. It is

seems like this wont affect me since i only use like 2 or 3 channels and go straight to the page of when i know a stream is about to start

any time they want to get on putting a toggle for watching "hosted streams" id be very happy to toggle those off

and yes, i have bettertwitchtv, the addon straight up doesnt block the hosted stream half the time and also comes with a bunch of options you cant turn off that make the site even more sluggish and the chat window really glitchy

Loving the update! The toolbar makes it feel so much more modern. It's something I never realized it needed until now. So much easier to keep track of followers and it even shows which ones have a playlist going on the left which is pretty cool. They've been making some great changes lately and I think it all started with the HTML5 player. (That and Twitch Prime is dope!)

The UI has now reverted back to the old one for me, lol.

The one good thing about the new one is that it's actually much more responsive - the site felt a lot faster.

Mine reverted to the old one, didn't find the new one the best but it made some things right imho, namely the account stuff on the upper right corner.

Too bad it's back again to the new one. It's so annoying that the top bar is frozen when watching a stream. The window is now lower than it used to be.

This is why I just use the streamlink Twitch UI.

I never watch a stream from the site itself and its amazing to see how far ahead I am to others in chat when I see their reactions to things.

Wow. This is waaaaaaaaaaaay better than the native web GUI that twitch has. So many options and customizability. Thanks for the tip!
