Ubisoft Connect: Not all Ubisoft PS4 games will work on PS5

There's no way Microsoft or Sony is going to put thousands of hours into titles to explore every corner and make sure everything works completely identically. I won't be surprised if either console has weird quirky issues in some titles. Too much time spent trying to get PC games to work because I play on a laptop a lot of the time for me to have faith that any platform will just work trying to run source code which was not targetted at it.

Guess I'll found out in a couple weeks, assuming that my preorders for the Series X and PS5 aren't delayed.

We don't know if that's the case for Xbox one games on the Xbox series consoles.

Everything I've read sounds like they just work and don't need a new download like the 360 and OG Xbox games do.

Okay. That is a fair assessment. I hope MS are trending towards the put the disc in and it works method.

One games get installed directly from the disc.
but game preservation on both will be a shitshow since when have we had a bug AAA game or even smaller game that is well optimised by simply playing the version that comes on the disc?

that almost never happens. you usually need at least the day 1 patch to have a something finished game.

so installing from a disc without server connection to get the latest patch will be an issue regardless of the fact that it installs directly from the disc or not.

There are many games that do boot, do let you play, but do have issues on the disc version. The issues may be game breaking as you say. The issues, however, may also be bad framerate or stuttering.

Provided the XSX/PS5 can run the game with increased processing, increased graphics processing, have more memory overhead, and a faster IO system may in fact allow these discs to run better.

It's almost like the peeps in this thread won't still have a PS4/Pro accessible to them.
I probably won't because I don't turn on old consoles and always focus on play new games.
That is why late gen backlog ends beings erased for a new next-gen life.

Same kind of compatability as the ps3 phat had for ps2? i remember back in the day i had Tour De France Centenary Edition and it did technicaly work on my ps3 phat, but it was full of graphical glitches and gamebreaking bugs, actually had to buy a ps2 slim to play that game.

Why do you guys think the store listing would be more up to date than Ubisofts info?

Sony likely booted games to quickly test them.. sets them by default to this "bootable but could have errors" state.

Then third parties would be the ones to do more full testing; and would likely let Sony know if a game should be marked as fully incompatible. Ubisoft released this blog post today indicating Syndicate is incompatible.

Expect Sony to update their store listing in the near future, but they would not know before Ubisoft.

Sony's "99%" comment comes from their bootability testing. Expect that to go down, not up, over time.

It does appear to have different wording compared to the other titles. Here's what it says about Doom Eternal.

To play this game on PS5, your system may need to be updated to the latest system software. Although this game is playable on PS5, some features available on PS4 may be absent. See PlayStation.com/bc for more details.

Notice it excludes:
When playing on PS5, this game may exhibit errors or unexpected behaviour

You know I was going to comment on how this was upsetting and then I realized that I never want to play syndicate ever and I'm not sure I saw anything in the other list that I ever want to play. In fact syndicate is a game that came with my Xbox one back in the day and I've still never played it I'm pretty sure I traded it in at some point unless it was digital I can't remember it might have just been a digital copy. Either way never touch that s***.

That's just the generic "compatible" message (meaning it's been tested more than just past booting) vs. the "bootable" message (likely only testing done by Sony was booting it, probably launching the game itself.)

There's no way for Sony to have done much testing of all 4,000 games.. hence Cerny saying they were going to focus on the top 100. Everyone thinks that was only for "boost mode" but Sony never said that.. they said "playable."

Sony's 99% message likely applied to bootability.. and they must have some confidence that most bootable games will also be compatible once tested. That's not really contradicted by this Ubisoft news.. as they have tons of games, and most are compatible.

You probably need to update the PS5 system software first. There already is a firmware update available. Digital Foundry's John Litman mentioned that the pre-installed Astrobot game was visually more polished after a firmware update. It wouldn't surprise me if the OS has a db with bc settings for a host of games that will be constantly updated by Sony until and after launch.

sony really does have their fans wrapped around their fingers, can flat out lie about backwards compatibility and somehow has got them believing the ps5 has features of a gpu that's two years away from being released.

I was thinking that Unity would have been the one game that would pose issues, but Syndicate surprises me. Yes, it'll boot and will be playable. I don't remember if it had issues on the current hardware as well.

It'll probably get patched in over time, same as the other bootable games. Doom Eternal seems to be past the bootable stage, so maybe only time will tell.

Interesting.

My theory is Sony only listed games that can't even boot.

Ubisoft are perhaps listing games that can boot, but just don't work past that.

This might be a deeper problem than expected.

Perhaps there are more games from other developers that don't get past boot, but PS mark as BC just because they can boot? Hmm.

At least they tried? I mean the whole saves not going between gens is a bigger blow than this tbh.

Syndicate is great, only AC I bothered to platinum. Shame it wont work.

Rest is some offshot stuff, not really amazing material.

First post has probably incomplete list of games marked by sony as "bootable" instead of "compatible". I hope it means they have some graphical glitches during game play and not freeze in menu.

Hearing Star Trek Bridge Crew is on the list is a huge blow to the gut. I doubt it will happen but I hope they patch that game to make it work. It's too good of a game to not be ps5 playable.

Jason just said on the Xbox podcast they have put 500,000 hours into testing 🤷🏼‍♀️
500000 thousand hours into testing is not "thousands of hours into titles" in the way I meant it (thousands of hours each title), although I apologize in not making my words more clear.

I still bet there will be weird quirky crap in titles. There's weird quirky crap in Xbox One titles running on the Xbox One. I gave up for over a month on completing the Bard's Tale Trilogy because of a bug in the xbox keyboard/game interface where it'd pop up a text box without the keyboard, requiring you to back out and start a sequence over, and I simply couldn't get the whole sequence to work. I did finally luck into it when I came back later, after maybe a dozen tries.

I have little doubt the games will play, and have upgraded graphics, that's Microsoft's thing. It's why I've owned every Xbox, and part of why since I've had it I use my Xbox One X more than my PS4.

MS only a day or two ago said that after 500,000 hours they had finally managed to make every Xbox One and previous BC 360 and OG XB games now playable on series x.
Chances are Sony is a bit behind MS on this, and so I would think more games will get ticked off in the coming weeks.

wtf is going on at Ubisoft? I doubt whoever wrote that post just randomly added a fake list of unsupported games... maybe they will word it differently? like maybe they will change it to "These games might exhibit gamebreaking errors" or something like that?
these companies and their messaging is so fucked up, they should know how stuff they put out will come across and should check if they are actually accurately describing the situation.

Ubisoft, CD Red, etc... The communication is horrible! Not to mention all the resolution wordplay from Ubisoft this week! It's embarrassing!

Obvious. Sony knows better than Ubisoft does at what games work. Ubisoft isn't wasting their time over there testing their games. Lots of console warriors looking dumb right now after saying "PS5 takes another L." This is why you wait for statements to be made before jumping to conclusions.

They seem to have done the same to you. You post in more Sony threads than Sony fans.

Seems to be fud....likely the compatibility issues get resolved as soon as they are identified.

Update: Since the publication of this article, Ubisoft reached out to IGN to confirm that it has removed the Ubisoft Connect article specifically due to possible errors regarding PS5 backward-compatible games.

Edit: already posted above
