Ubisoft hate?

Not open for further replies.
to be fair, outside of sony and nintendo every game company is pretty much hated by the internet. EA probably tops the list with ubisoft and MS right behind them

Most of their games just feel like they adhere to a specific formula these days. The open world cycle. Even the one recent game I really liked by them, Watch Dogs, everybody hated. And then they released a sequel that, to me, was just inferior in nearly every way. I don't hate Ubisoft, I'm mostly indifferent to them now.

Just stop pumping out so many open world games in the retail market.

Edit - I just remembered, they've got For Honor out soon, which actually is a breath of fresh air by Ubisoft standards. I'm not excited about it though for some reason. Vikings vs samurai to me is about as intriguing as cowboys vs aliens.

Watch dogs, rainbow six, the division, AC Unity, etc. People don't 'hate' them for no reason. Personally i try to stay as far away from Ubi games as i can. Not only do their IPs not really interest me personally but their focus on MP games is kinda ehhh. For example, For Honor looks really good, but after playing the Alpha & Beta i can't help but feel that the sp campaign will just be glorified MP levels.

Although, they have made some excellent games in recent memory, AC Black Flag & south park.

They're not the worst but definitely not the best in terms of quality games. I do hope Beyond Good and Evil 2 will be one of their top quality games in the future.

Say what you will about Assasin's Creed but Ubisoft's ability to bring the feel and spirit of a historical period and land long since past to life in those games is regularly impressive.

The only I used to not like them was because thier games seemed to always have screen tearing...thats doesnt seem to be the case this gen.

They also make solid games if a bit too cookie cutter sometimes. But I really enjoyed the last 2 FC games and more recently Steep and R6 both of which are pretty unique.

I will say that For Honor looks original and fun though...cant wait for that one.

I've played plenty of Ubisoft games that I really like - most recently The Division (after patch 1.4) and Farcry 3/4 have been brilliant, and total value for money.

Currently going through AC: Unity (got it on a special on PSN - Black Flag, Unity and Syndicate for £20 I think it was). It's certainly got it's problems. Uplay as a platform is not outstanding too - but it provides cross platform rewards, which is something new and interesting.

The thing is - when Ubisoft fuck up, it's usually a massive fuck up and it hits their reputation. But they are capable and have released really, really fun games. Black Flag and Farcry 3 are in my discussion of best games of the last few years IMO.

Well i actually like Ubisoft. Granted i'm ignoring major AAA releaes from them and in general for that matter.

Not many major studios are ballsy enough to venture away from big budget titles and make smaller yet high quality titles. Rayman Origins, Legends, Child of Light, South Park. Or just experiment to bring something fresh to the table Driver San Francisco, Red Steel 2, Prince of Persia.

The biggest problem they have like many similar big studios is either weak quality control or higher ups forcing bizzare decisions. Releasing unfinished products and not very honest marketing.

So big props Ubi, you ain't perfect but when you do good. You do real good.

their games are just normally so mediocre

I think this is what really does it to me, personally, and why I can enjoy games like Mad Max or Mafia 3 that while have numerous issues I still put lots of time into and completed them.

Ubisoft is different in that they're just so confidently mediocre. They put tens of millions into making everything so pretty and shiny and TOPCLASS AAAA+(tm) but the gameplay and design elements underneath are just completely boring and tired, and intentionally so. They're entirely shallow games with little to no mechanical meat to anything they make, and that's the way they want it. Okay enough that it's playable and approachable, but nothing more. They don't even really try anymore. That's the core difference between something like Mad Max and something like Far Cry Primal. At least Avalanche fucking tried to do something interesting and engaging. FCP and other ubisoft games are fine with wrapping the same game you played a year ago into a different shell and hitting "ship".

I like Ubisoft quite a lot
- Their games are great
- Their open world approach, including towers, are fun
- The quality of their titles usually good/great
- Aisha Tyler is entertaining and glad they bring her back
- Their games are great

They went a little overboard on their open-world formula. Otherwise, yeah they're not nearly as bad as GAF would have you think.

And they've been trying to pull away from it. You can see that with watch dogs 2. No towers to unlock the map, its literally just explore the world and you'll find missions to do.

People complain about "oh so many outposts" and their "lack of mission design", but imo I genuinely prefer open ended levels where I can do it however I want instead of the heavily scripted trash mission design seen in Rockstars games. Like I feel they understand what an open world should be in moment to moment since it should be "give the player a bunch of tools, and let them figure out how to do it" instead of a hyper linear script one must follow to a tee. Like people rail on them because they used to have 3 games with very similar formula's that bled into other companies (Like Warner Bros) games and that AC was a yearly franchise. But now AC has been delayed, and Watch Dogs 2 made efforts to move away from their formula, but a lot of people didn't want to give Watch Dogs 2 a shot on GAF because "lol ubisoft".

Honestly, I've hit a point where I don't really want to have discussions or look in threads about ubisoft games on GAF because it's clear I am in a minority, where the majority claims their gameplay loop is bad but don't really back it up or explain why it is "bad".

I'm not saying their games are perfect, they do have flaws but I'm just fed up with the lack of explanation people have for claiming these games are "bad or mediocre".

I think this is what really does it to me, personally, and why I can enjoy games like Mad Max or Mafia 3 that while have numerous issues I still put lots of time into and completed them.

How the hell can you say "Mad Max tried to do something interesting and engaging" it is the most"open world throw garbage around the map" game I've ever seen in a long time. The combat mechaics are copy and pasted from the Rocksteady template (which is also used in Shadow of Mordor). Not to mention the outposts can only be cleared in one way and that is to punch everything. Its incredibly mediocre. The only thing of worth might be the car combat, but you saying "Mad Max is interesting, while Ubi's openworlds lack interesting mechanics" is incredibly bullshit.

Sure FCP is not a good example, but they've done games like AC4 with really great ship mechanics and Watch Dogs 2 opening up the level design to actually offer different ways of solving a mission.

I dislike the majority of their games because they apply the same kind of formula and it isn't very fun. I like when they shake the formula strongly, like with Black Flag. For Honor looks like it could be good as well.

Because they purposely try to decieve pc gamers with their fake ass gameworks trailers. The trailers include hand crafted, frabricated footage

Theres other reasons but the above is just completely despicable and they deserve whatever happens to them when vivendi takes over

I'll never get the hate for Ubitowers, they give a sense of progression to the world IMO. I think Ubisoft needs to be commended for their push for diversity in video games, which is a lot more than can be said for most other publishers, but I just don't find most of their games that fun to play. I'm having fun with Watch Dogs 2, though, in terms of their recent output.

Honestly I have no problem with their games (mostly) but FUCK Uplay! What a piece of shit service. I can't fucking stand it! GAH!

I see their open-world games as travel simulator and love them for that unique reason. They always have a great atmosphere and a diverse cast of characters as well. And there's so much stuff to do, you can always find at least a few things that are enjoyable to you.

Also, they always get dirt cheap in no time.

Exactly want I was talking aout earlier, criticizing Ubisoft open world game and praising Mad Max of all game in the same sentence.

They've put out a lot of mediocre games but I think right now they're putting out some of the most consistent AAA games since AC: Syndicate launched but unfortunately they still have that Revelations, AC3, Conviction stink for a lot of people.

and the fact that For Honor doesn't have Dedicated Servers is beyond stupid

Ubisoft have good games, but they never hit great standards. The gameplay is impressively mediocre, cookie cutter design and poor storytelling. I do admit I buy their games, but only ever at bargain prices.

They need to try harder and stop annualing their games. Also they need to make real attempt at an RPG.

- Their games are not very good
- Their AAA games are way too samey
- They popularized the bland, paint-by-numbers AAA open-world game that's fucking everywhere (and is fucking terrible)
- They have a long history of bullshitting about their games (bullshots, fake MP video footage, downgrades, and even reverse bullshots)
- Releasing pathetically unfinished games like AC: Unity
- Ridiculously long credits (seriously, fuck off)
- Aisha Tyler
- uPlay
- Their games are really just not very good

Yeah, I don't care for Ubisoft and I honestly do understand the hate, sorry OP. I like Rayman Legends and Valiant Hearts, but that's about it.

Get out of here.

The difference between the two is that they actually tried in Mad Max. It's a pretty okay at best game, but when you play it you can tell they really loved the world and put everything they had into making it even if it did fall short in a number of areas. I'm okay with it being at best a "7/10 game" because they took a bad situation with a bungled development and made something fun and interesting out of it. If Avalanche had put out 5 Mad Max games in 7 years you might have a point, but they didn't.

With Ubisoft they just transparently recycle the same garbage year after year after year, despite having the man power and money to do whatever they want to. If Avalanche had 100M to make whatever they wanted would I see the same shit I see in Ubisoft games? No, I don't think I would. I just don't have it in me to cut Ubisoft any slack, especially when developers have made games in the genres Ubisoft shits out of their corporate skinner box creation machine with less budget and manpower that were much, much better.

Uplay is annoying(and the reason I generally don't buy their games) and their PC ports have been incredibly spotty.

Like seriously...where the hell is Splinter Cell?

Theyre gonna make it open world arent they?

Which is the antithesis to Splinter Cells masterly crafted linear level design. The only modern Splinter Cell I want to see is a mid-budget release so Ubisoft doesn't feel the need to tick all the boxes to appeal to the largest audience possible. Give me Chaos Theory 2 damnit. Linear-ish level design, focus on light and shadow gameplay, slow and methodical movement, and less focus on OP gadgets and equipment(looking at you Blacklist). But by how Ubi is treating the new 'Ghost Recon', I'm doubting it'll ever happen.

As usual your just justifying your point of view with felings instead of facts.

Your comparing a gaming studio with a publisher which doesn't make much sense. Avalanche was contracted to do Mad Max, they didn't up and choose to do it.

Furthermore Ubisoft isn't "recyclying the same garbage year after year after year" as you said. Eagle Flight as well as Werewolves Within, For Honor and Steep proves you wong.

And no Mad Max isn't a 7/10 game for me, more like a 5/10 at best. But that's my opinion and your entitled to yours

I think Rayman is kind of neat and I admire their smaller projects like Valiant Hearts and Child of Light, but they have not made a big budget project I like since their inception, and I have not and probably will not ever buy a game they develop.

The Assassin's Creed series is one of the top five gaming experiences of this and last gen.

I really liked the annual releases, I thought it was the perfect amount of time for me to enjoy each game before moving on to the next.

Yes, I have been called many names on NeoGAF for saying this before.

I feel like they just don't put out any games that are worth my time. With so many games coming out it saves me a lot of time to just say I'll never buy from certain publishers. I agree with a lot of people in the thread that their games are just ok. Don't get me wrong I can have fun with games like Far Cry 4, but I'd rather be playing something with substance. Last game I enjoyed from Ubisoft was Assassin's Creed Brotherhood and that was on release.

I'm bored of them due to how similar all the games are. They went down the franchise hole that many developers go but they've still got a demand so good luck to them.

They're the main catalyst of the "Maddenization" of game franchises, something that even Rockstar stopped doing with their biggest franchise after the PS2 era. There's a lot to dislike about that.

And also, to agree with Jim Sterling, how do you fuck up TETRIS?!

I really do like a lot of their games - both the big and small ones - but some of their publishing/business decisions can be irritating, albeit I can't think of anything truly egregious recently.

I'm not really a fan of Ubisoft unless they're allowing Rayman games to be made.

Their style of AAA open world games is not what I look for at all.

But also they have a really bad habit of misleading people seemingly every single time they make one of their trademark open world games (Watch_Dogs, Far Cry 4, The Division) and even something like Rainbow Six Siege.

The initial footage for these games were spruced up BS and the actual releases were downgraded. Its a really shady practice that I can't condone at all, and somehow they keep doing it with their major titles.

I actually really like Ubi. Sure they're a bit dumb at times, especially throwing all their eggs into one tower filled open world basket. But they're one of the few left to take risks. They released Steep recently, a snowboarding game these days out of nowhere. Then they have For Honor coming soon. At least they still take risks amidst their own stupidity. They could easily churn out tower hunter #46.

Yeah, ubisoft never does this. I mean that lady who spent 2 years of her life modelling the Notre Dame Cathedral, not to mention the rest of the team who spent 5 years recreating Paris didn't put any effort into it. Nope none at all. Or the fact they released 7 games in a row all meticulously crafting worlds, creating new assets for new iterations (2-Revelation) (3-Rogue) (Unity-Syndicate)

I don't even like unity. I think its a poor game, but trying to say "oh they recycle the same things over and over despite having money and resources to do it" is inane. Hell the reason I dislike unity is because the new mechanics they added in were not good.

Do you actually think every ubisoft game has the same budget behind it? You think FarCry Primal is a 100 million dollar game? Fucking hell budget =/= quality, look at Destiny. A good portion of budget is for marketing anyways and not all of that money goes into development costs.

Finally you don't even explain "what makes ubisoft games lazy" with examples. You just make broad statements saying "their games are bad" and then say "oh other games doing the same thing are better for some reason"

Just fucking say "you don't like their formula" instead of "this is a bad game" and give no real explanation as to why it is a bad game.

I am very interested in seeing assassins creed with a year of rest on it. E3 should be fun

AC3 really soured me on that series

I'm not a big fan of their formula with the Assassin's Creed games but I LOVE it for Far Cry so I'm probably part of the problem. I am glad they took a year off from AC because even though I really enjoyed Syndicate, I'm sure they'll come back with a lot of new ideas after a break.

To me it's just impossible to not compare WD2 to GTAV, and GTAV is better in almost every single way.

Depends on what you want out of a game. Mechanically WD2 is better and it also has way more player agency when compared to GTA.

R6 is the true star of their line-up though. And For Honor has a ton of potential too.

Ubisoft is the company I want to love but disappoints me far too often.

They have great ideas for games, but too often fall short on being a solid game. I love that they have spent time with games like From Dust, Steep, Child of Eden, Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, and they tinker in lots of areas that don't get enough attention.

They have also absolutely butchered one of the best franchises in gaming history; Heroes of Might and Magic, and their development for their latest title, which I did not buy, was horribly mangled.
