Ugliest title screens in good games

That font.

That font is awesome.

What the hell is wrong with you? That's an awesome title screen.

Look at that compression, those artifacts and the color reduction. That's not due to my jpg image, that's from the original screen. They basically threw the artwork into the cartridge without touching up anything nor pixelart'ing it for a clearer appearance.

I played the original game 20 years ago on my SNES and it looks great an a real tv.

Those are all great, actually. Dunno how in the seven hells they'd get on an "ugliest" list. I mean compared to the example in the OP, they're glorious, even.

I think the worst part is that when ever you enter a new screen on the menu, it zooms in, making how pixilated it looks that much worse. The transition was painful to watch when it was new.
Yeah, that was bad. The title screen layout itself is fine but that stupid slow pixellated zoom was just annoying.

He's right, Secret of Mana title screen is one of the worst ever. EXTREMELY compressed, tons of artifacts visible even on the shittiest old TV of that era. I literally thought the title screen must hold some incredible secret since it looked so terrible. Then you have the 15 frames per second pink birds that fly by awkwardly overlaid...

The music is good, that's it.

These threads always end up the same. Some people are posting some of the best, most awesome title screens ever and think people are going to agree with them in thinking theyre bad.

to be honest i think most old/retro games have poor title screens due to the graphics. which seems like what most people are saying bout them anyway

in some ways that gears 2 screen is the best here (at being worst) due to it being a fairly recent game but having an ass of a title screen

God Hand and Hotline Miami are two I really liked. In both cases I just sat there and looked at them for a few minutes the first time I saw them.

I remember when I started playing it was a nice and clean title screen. But it gradually got worse and worse as they added those mini expansions. I think you can even add seekers of adoulin to the bottom of that list now.
Is this really what it looks like now? What a shame.

The screen wouldn't have been so bad if someone hadn't just use the cut and paste tool for the expansion titles.

Also, I'm hoping XIV is a little more creative with it's expansion names, lol.

MW2 is my favorite CoD, but the title screen is as ugly and barebones as it gets.

I remember being taken aback, and even wondered if I bought a pirated copy or something.

That title screen is what Destiny should have followed. The PvP in that game is hidden and locked away, whereas COD displays it right in front of you and it is obvious. You can also boot straight to the multiplayer menu in COD and you can get into matches within 30 seconds of putting the disc in.

Mega Man 3. So plain.

Especially compared to the Japanese version:

As for Secret of Mana, the title screen is so blurred and pixellated that it ruins the original art.

Looking for a tag quote, I see.

Actually I completely agree with him. It looks like they took a large 16-bit image than downsampled it to 8-bit and dropped the resolution instead of recreating the image properly as pixelart.

The result is a a badly colored artifact ridden mess. If the SNES could have displayed the original image, it wouldn't be bad, but the final result is lazy and ugly.

plain != ugliest

A lot of people seem to have really high standards to claim some of these as 'ugliest' anything.

Haha damn I mean I love Hotline Miami as much as the next dude but when I thought of the ugliest title screen that was the first game that came to mind. Didn't realize it was so beloved on gaf but that shit makes my eyes bleed.

Yeah but it makes your eyes bleed in the coolest way and totally fits the dirty aesthetic of the game

What about this though

Amiga port was the best, but...that title screen even back then didnt seem to blend nice with the game

while Jazz Jackrabbit 1 title screen was ok. the sequel title screen was atrocious. that Spazz really got into my nerves. At least the FMV intro was nicely animated

I understand that game was low budget back then, but at least they could have made a better title screen. The Amiga could afford it and even NES titles looked better!
