Uh oh, PSP preorders already exceeding $400 on eBay

Anyone who pays $300+ for a PSP has lost their mind.

I'm waiting to hear more about the battery life. less than 4 hours battery life would be too inconvenient. The DS already seems a bit short and I think lasts about 8 hours on a single charge (not counting sleep mode).

The SNES is the only console I bought near its launch date, which was one month after. The rest has been at least one year. So the same will happen with the DS and PSP. Let you guys get the buggy defective hardwares, and I'll wait for revised ones.

Damn skippy. To pay that much for a first-run mass market Sony product must take some serious dedication/guts/colombian heather. For taking the hit for me, I salute you guys. Go get 'em tiggers!

I have two October 25th preorders with Play-Asia, I kept on pressing refresh after the announcement. Your PSP is mine!

But what about the horrible battery life, unreliable Sony hardware, and bad launch games. Surely you want to cancel?

Pretty please?

*cry* And all I have is a recent lik-sang preorder. I'm going to try and bank on the idea that A) most people preordered from Play-Asia and B) that maybe if I don't get in the first shipment, I can get in the second, which Sony will hopefully provide just a week or so after the first. As long as I can get it by Xmas, I'll be happy. If I can't, I'll still be happy when I get it, but until then, mildly perturbed.

I'm still doubting that the PSP is going to be released in March 2005 in NA. I just have this feeling it is going to get delayed -for one reason or another- To September 2005/November 2005.

Was this already posted? Has some interesting numbers that fill in some blanks...

Long, cold night likely for Sony's first PSP customers

Martyn Williams, IDG News Service

Dec. 12 could start off uncomfortably for the thousands of people who are expected to want to buy Sony's new handheld PSP (PlayStation Portable) on its launch day.

With just over two weeks to go until the system goes on sale in Japan, many retailers are not accepting advance orders and some of the country's largest electrical retailers said Thursday that they don't plan to take any. What's more, signs point towards demand for the gadget far outstripping supply. This all leaves prospective customers one option: get in line.

Queuing overnight ahead of the release of major computer entertainment hardware is not unusual in Japan. Long lines greeted Sony's PlayStation 2 in 2000, which was the last major game system launch, and lines are also expected next week when Nintendo launches its DS (Dual Screen) console in Japan.

However, the reluctance of retailers to accept advance orders this time around is different. Customers have been able to place Nintendo DS orders for several weeks but the same stores are not taking advance orders for PSP. At retailers big and small the answer has been the same: there are no current plans to accept PSP orders because we have no idea how many we'll be getting from Sony.

Sony says it has already notified major retailers of the number of PSPs they can expect by launch day and that some smaller shops might miss out because demand is far outstripping supply.

"On day one we will be shipping 200,000 units nationwide, which is really not that big of a number," said Yoshiko Furusawa, a spokeswoman for SCEI. "Each retailer's allocation will not be (a lot) so some small retailers might not get an allocation."

After the initial shipment, SCEI is planning to produce a further 100,000 units during each of the remaining three weeks of this year to take total shipments for the Japanese domestic market to 500,000 for this year, she said.

Supply is looking very tight and demand is high, said Pascal Clarysse, marketing manager for Hong Kong-based Pacific Game Technology, which operates the specialist Lik-Sang.com retail Web site for gaming products.

The company has already accepted around 5,000 pre-orders for the PSP and is currently trying to secure as many units as possible before launch day. Because it's based outside of Japan, the company can't order directly from Sony and is forced to work its contacts and acquire the PSP through Japanese distributors.

"There's a huge shortage," said Clarysse. "It's never happened before that before I even confirm my orders, the distributors are telling me my order is too high. I'm asking for 500, which is 10 percent of what I need, and they are telling me it's impossible."

He estimates demand for the PSP is around 25 percent higher than that for the Nintendo DS, which Lik-Sang began shipping over the weekend with the U.S. launch. In contrast to the 200,000 units that Sony plans to have ready for the PSP launch, Nintendo prepared 1 million units of the DS for the U.S. launch and plans to have 300,000 units in stores for the Japanese launch.

An early indicator of demand for the PSP was a charity auction that Sony held in Japan on Wednesday. It offered 500 PSP Value Packs -- which include the player and a memory card, headphones and carrying case -- in an online auction with the proceeds going to help people affected by a recent string of large earthquakes in Japan's Niigata prefecture.

Of the 500 successful bids in the auction, which ran from midnight on Wednesday to midnight on Thursday, the lowest was YEN 50,000 (US$485) and the highest was YEN 338,888. Lucky customers who manage to pick one up in stores on Dec. 12 will pay YEN 26,040.

yeesh...Good luck to all of you trying to pre-order from Lik-Sang and other Asian exporters...

Wow. Sell your Japan PSP preorders. :P So Sony is going to be able to go from 100,000 a week to, what, 250,000 a week beginning in January?! This is why I have my doubts about a March 2005 NA launch.

Met the Sony Rep today in Mississauga, Ontario. She says PSP is a lock for March but wouldn't say the price. She said it's going to be very, very competitive.

I was honestly going to go buy a DS before reading this thread.

Daaaaaaamn.

$150 it is:D

Ugh, well, I'm still not waiting til March. Hopefully news like this will prompt a lot of people to cancel their pre-orders.

They actually peeked at 300 I think. But you have to take into account that the DS was readily available in the U.S... The PSP isn't coming until March. :)

i never saw DS go for that much on ebay. Hell, I saw so many auctions where the buyer was asking for $200 right off the bat, and they would expire without even one bid on it

$175 was about the average price, I saw some people get taken for $190-$200, but nowhere near $300.

The question is, why would anyone import the PSP? There's not a single game worth importing before the US launch in March (unless you like Mah Jong), and the Japanese unit will be locked out from playing US UMD movies.

Oh shit, you have played them or did you just read a review....oh wait.

Because we really like the PSP? Because we can still get the game sooner, even if they come with the March launch? That's why. Plus, there are a few games they're getting that we won't get over here.

I agree on the point of being locked for movies, and I don't mind waiting couple more months, but why do you think Lumines, Mina Golf or Ridge Racers are not worth buying?

I didn't say they weren't worth buying. I said they're not worth sacrificing movie playback for.

Also, if the PSP retails for 150-200 in the US and I REALLY REALLY want UMD movies for some reason, then I'll get a domestic PSP, too.

From what you are hearing, do you really think the PSP will be out in NA March 2005?

You're a richer man than I am. But really, unless you're into Japanese manga or film, when the US units are released, your Japanese unit will be worthless. Of course, there's always eBay after that. If you want to pay $300 to play Luminese, an average golf game, and another Ridge Racer for a couple months be my guest. The Japanese market could use some help, anyway.

I've heard some rumblings of a delay in North America, but nothing I have been able to substantiate.

That's not a lot of money. If it wasn't as much of a hassle as it is, I'd import it, then sell it on eBay after the US release. I would love to be able to play 'another' RR (harsh word, it's not like we get them every year...) and Lumines as soon as possible, but maybe that's because Rez is one of my favorite games ever, and I'm a huge gadget freak to boot.

i have no interest in umd movies, so a potential lockout is a non-issue. if i could copy dvds to memory stick, though...

To me, $300 is a lot of money. Especially at Christmas time. Don't know if you're aware or not, but game journalists aren't exactly pulling down the big bucks. I have an equal compulsion for gadgetry. And I think I've imported every platform since the SNES. But having played all its Japanese launch games, I've not been able to rationalize importing the PSP. An inferior version of Ridge Racer when compared to its console iterations apparently isn't enough to get my brain to cough up the cash. Plus, it doesn't hurt that people at the office will have them anyway.

Just for the record, doesnt look like too many are ordering DS off Ebay either. My guess is that all of these people bought the system for $149 in the stores and are just selling it for a buck :D

That's what the Edit button is for :lol. Not my fault if you quoted something I didnt mean to post. I saw that both of the systems were going for a heck of alot and edited my post....

Like hell you didn't mean to post it! Your post was much more elaborate than what I quoted, and included a break down of a 99 cent PSP pre-order auction without a single bid :P

How could you not mean to post that!! :) Well, the change of heart was nice :lol

The guy selling them for 450$ should work for SONY marketing!! The 10 reasons to get a PSP are just gold.

Maybe that's bc My Ebay settings were on Highest Price and not Ending Soonest. If you looked at one page, you only get a few high prices but the other gave alot in both. I knew something had to be up with both systems, so I did another category search and found the prices the thread starter was talking about. I'm sorry you didnt really get to personally correct me, I edited it before then. Oh well, better luck next time :D
