Ultima Series: Where to start?

I put an extraordinary amount of time into UO before the later expansion packs started to ruin the game, but I've never played any other games in the series. I was thinking 7 was the best myself, just from what I've heard so I'm gonna go and try this game out.

I found a Ultima 7 "Complete Edition" on GOG so I'm gonna give this a shot. It's windows 7 compatible so there's no need to dosbox or anything. I'm curious to see how it would play on a PSP though, that would be awesome.

This guy "Spoony" does a retrospective of the series.

If you can, investigate Ultima Underworld. It's a first person dungeon crawl. It's very very much worth playing. Simply amazing.

Ultima 7 with Exult is probably the best experience.

http://www.it-he.com/ has a bunch of excellent anti-walkthroughs for Ultima. Essentially breaking the game in as many ways possible, including killing Lord British, obtaining so much money that it overflows and breaks the engine, and force feeding drugs to dragons.

I stand by my suggestion:

I still play online, but on a private shard that is like the t2a era. I actually signed up for the official UO because they offered a free trial. The first thing I did was make a toon then run to brit bank, but they changed it too much and added a bunch of weird things that you'd see on crazy private shards, plus there was no one in sight. Haven't logged back in yet and I don't really plan to.

Ultima 7\Serpents Isle is great - one of the best rpgs made. Ultima 8 was pretty good but had some very frustrating puzzles plus some control issues. Ultima 9 was...well...an interesting experiment. I've found any Ultimas earlier than 7 are pretty damn archaic. Like others have said, check out Ultima Underworld 1 and 2 if you can. There are other Ultima spin offs like The Savage Empire which is really really good too.

I actually played 8 when it was new as a kid and thought it was badass. Yeah, it's got nothing on the older games, but the graphics were mind-blowing to me and they still look nice.

Thanks a lot for all of the suggestions everyone. I've currently got Ultima 4 from GoG since it was free. Haven't done much so far, just trying to figure out all the different commands you can type out.

I'll take a look at Ultima 7 as well.

9 got a lot of criticism when it came out and rightly so. However the first moment I sailed into bucaneers den in 3D is still a high moment in gaming for me. I would get it, play around a bit, but don't dig too deep.
Yes, was in awe when I first played it in 2000.
To bad it's (was) bug ridden but exploring the 3D Britannia was really fun despite not being as expansive as in previous games
