Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection | Review Thread

I'm a bit surprised some people are skipping the collection due to the demo impressions, especially if you loved the trilogy on PS3. I mean it's just a demo and doesn't really give you a proper feeling of the game or gameplay. I've a feeling that after couple of hours of playing the gameplay feels natural and smooth again. Plus I'm mostly excited to experience the story and the characters again.

I think for their time, those games are perfect (well, 2 & 3). But there's too many issues I have with it today. Mostly the floaty Nathan. The aiming and gunplay feels cheap. Even the helicopter scene from the demo didn't wow me again. It just felt old.

I've played all of them already which is why I'm skipping. Graphics being updated isn't enough for me to jump on board when there's too many other games coming out.

If you've played then it you know that's essentially the whole "gameplay" of the Uncharted games anyway. The demo just made some people realise their memory of the games was better than the reality. I'm still getting it, but the demo made it pretty clear the games are a bit dated now and the graphics aren't that good. Half the fun of Uncharted is the set pieces and character interactions and if you've played them before then that's all old.

the melee was not improved in UC3, they made it more tedious and convoluted. there were a handful of those big guys and his cousins from around the world you had to pummel with the same formula of button mashes. and the melee would get you too involved in firefights, leading to deaths.
I agree with this. One of the biggest reasons why I never finished uncharted 3

The best melee is from Uncharted 1. Uncharted 2-3 melee gets you killed in firefights. Who in their right minds would melee somebody in Crushing mode when there is several enemies alive in Uncharted 2-3?

Fair enough and you make some valid points. I understand completely this point of view especially with so many games to play at the moment. I guess I was trying to say that I don't personally let just the demo affect all the good memories I've from the series, but I'm interested to see how they hold up after playing them all again. I just recently played again Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time 3D and to me they play just as well as they did back when they were released. I hope it will be the case with the Uncharted as well, especially with the new and improved remasters.

You're right especially if you've played them several times. I've personally played each through only once so they're not that fresh in my memory. I can't wait to experience them again.

Looks like it's getting some great reviews, which is unsurprising looking at the the tech threads on the collection. Sounds like Bluepoint did a great job here.

Read some of the more critical reviews out of curiousity and some of them were kind of... odd in what they're counting as negatives in there... but I'll not dwell on it considering how hostile certain gaffers get if you don't agree with any critical points in game reviews.

Jim Sterling did a good job on his review though at least. Critical and fair all at once, so clearly it can be done :)

You can have a review thread if you can act like adults.

Like the mod who was hiding behind the modbot account so they could make generalising insults about a group of GAF members (Which is behaviour I've seen members get banned for in the past.) based on the posts of a small handful of people as they were locking the last thread you mean?

Reviewing remasters is still weird to me. It's not like the game really changes so most of the criteria they cover isn't applicable. A technical analysis is more appropriate in my opinion since that answers the question, "Is it a good remaster." Can't wait to play these for the first time though.

Some of them probably had no intention, lots of hyperbole quite frankly over uncharted gameplay which is great. It is in every Naughty dog thread.

Don't see how outdated UC 2's gameplay is? It plays as well as a good modern tps game would? Am I missing something? Uc2 and 3 are not that old and play fantastic imo.

A very solid remaster thats lost the MPs of its original games - 8/10 sounds about right

Ill be picking this up at some point, though Ive played the first two to death, mainly because of the UC4 MP Beta :p

Yeah that was petty and sad - hopefully that gets sorted...

ps3ud0 8)

I read the DF article on the technical aspects of the remaster, and which really bigged up the game, but I had to say that when I played the snippet of the Uncharted 2 Nepal level in the demo I felt like I'd lost my rose tinted spectables. While textures and some models do look better, the environment is quite sparse and basic in complexity compared to what I've become used in PS4 games - and yes, I know these is an unfair comparison!

That said, I'm still really stoked to play these games again so I am looking forward to the Blu-ray version popping through my letterbox next Friday.

Are you seriously defending that other thread....

Please...if it can stop that bullshit and make review threads a better place without people constantly sitting there trying to discredit people because they said something you find "odd" and all that. Please it's a good thing what the mods are doing now, maybe some people can realize that shit is really childish.

I think the fact that this doesn't have MP really sucks. Saying you don't want to split up the UC2/3 community on PS3 is just silly. It would be a great incentive for those last gen user to upgrade. Plus couldn't they just transfer stats anyway?

There's some still playing UC2 MP still? Haven't touched it in so long, pretty cool to know that there is still a lot people playing the MP.

Same. Whennis this out? Not starting anything new until this. Just finished arkham knight, until dawn and tearaway unfolded. I guess I could try and kill everyone in UD while I wait..

Comes out on the 7th I believe. Trying to finish up Kingdom Hearts 2.5 before I move onto UC1 in it's all new glory.

I haven't played a cover-shooter since The Order.

I feel like an addict without his fix. INTO MY VEINS

I don't think there is. I think they didn't want to include MP because they wanted the game out for the holiday season.

so is it confirmed that all of the prerendered videos are now real time in this collection? That's the impression i got from the demo at least and it would explain how they fit all three games onto one disc

It's outdated in the sense that it's literally just point and shoot now with the gunplay - it feels a bit basic. There's two issues that exacerbates it in the demo - the fact that you're locked to normal difficulty and the 60fps making everything so snappy. Compared to something like TLOU your aim feels "too good", there's not enough visual feedback with firing your weapon and the of course the gun sounds are terrible in comparison. I'm sure the game will feel more satisfying when you can play on crushing or very hard difficulty.

Gameplay has been surpassed by TLOU and Tomb Raider(IMO)

I agree with this, especially the bolded. I'm still going to get this remaster, because I like every Uncharted game as an overall package, but the shooting and movement feel a lot more fluid and satisfying in TR 2013 than they ever did in any Uncharted game I played.

Review scores don't matter to me for this title. I was always buying this ASAP for its '1080p/60fps/Upgraded visuals/Brutal Difficulty/Bonuses and Unlockables/Photo Mode/Platinum 'em all over again/U4 MP beta access' goodness.

I tried playing the demo yesterday and to preface this I never played an uncharted game, is it just my being used to TLOU that it felt weird for me to play? I thought the dialogue was really charming and the whole running and jumping thing was pretty cool if not a bit floaty feeling, that goes for the gunplay too. Do you think just playing the demo a few times will help it click for me, it kinda felt like the demo was for people who already played the games and needed to see one of the more iconic scenes remastered, not so much introduce new people to the games.

Played through the demo a couple of times last night, damn, Uncharted 2 still looks so good, could pass as an original PS4 game from a lot of developers.

Hmm it has a few cutscenes ,some funny lines, platforming, some gunplay and a boss battle.

I think you should keep trying like I said before it may click.

Try the demo a couple more times tbh but if it doesn't click then it doesn't click. I think the gameplay is a bit dated and I'm not the biggest UC1/UC3 fan in the first place but UC2 was phenomenal when it came out.

Which section is in the demo? I haven't played it yet.

I thought the demo was impressive. I really want to play through all three, especially since I never played Drake's Fortune. But sadly I'm probably going to have to wait until this semester is over and I have more time to run through them.

You have to realize that the game is rated for Teen, and thus, they must lower the impact of the violence to keep it at that rating. I'm actually very surprised on what they have accomplished considering neck-snapping and other murder-like elements are very pop referential to action movies without the camera cuts and the like.

I don't even know what this means....you can say that about any shooter really, in reality there is a heck of a lot more to it then that like stealth, melee, grreat encounters, multiple ways to take on enemies, UC offers all this.,

Ive got to say I expected to be more excited about this game than I actually am, however I will eventually have to get this once the holiday bloat passes.

The "this game has killing in it so -2 points. Only for Uncharted though, all other games are fine" critiques are so bizarre to me. It's a meme that people actually buy into.

Oh well, I'm really looking forward to playing it.

Games are so good they have little else to latch unto.

One reviewer "it has aged very poorly"
Another says "it has aged remarkably well"

It's almost like talking about how something has "aged" is a shitty way to evaluate something that requires so many qualifiers to be a worthwhile avenue of discussion you may as well focus on those qualifiers (and, by extension, the actual design of the game and why you think it works/doesn't) instead.

Like I've said in the demo thread it isn't a very good stretch of the game for the showing off the main strengths of the systems, and what you've said seems to be exactly what the intentions of the demo were (because, beyond being shown at E3 once I can't think of any other reason they'd choose this segment).

ngl the poorer than expected reviews have me considering cancelling my preorder. No longer sure this is worth $74.99 plus tax

I have never played Uncharted and I played the demo for the Collection yesterday. It feels and looks wonderful. I can't wait to dive in next Friday.

Woo Hoo! Just had my delivery confirmed by Simply Games. Should be getting this tomorrow or Monday at the latest.

Gonna finish MGSV before I jump on it though.

I'll gladly say exactly the same thing publicly as my user account. Uncharted review threads are consistently among our most embarrassing threads. The way people react to reviews of games in general is embarrassing, but something about the Uncharted games specifically tends to bring out the worst in people.

And frankly, you have all played these games before. The only new information you're getting here is about the quality of the ports, so using the thread to whine about how someone doesn't think these games are as amazing as you do is more transparent than usual.
