Lastly, I've got a soft spot for this :

Yes, it's only the cheesy 80s guitar music that somewhat ruins the atmosphere, but it's truly a gem.

Speaking of gems, this is a children's film that's more chilling than most horrors for grown-ups I've ever seen:

Fans of Neil Gaiman should definitely enjoy it.

Dunno if this has been mentioned before, but Black Christmas.

It's definitely one of my favourite horror films.

Just some of my favourite scenes:
- The first person plasticbag strangling scene was disturbing and a cool way to film it
- the body in the attic
- When you can see the murderers crazy eye near the end from that narrow slit between the door and wall, you know what i'm talking about if you've seen the movie

A lengthy bump I know, but I've been watching more of the recommended movies in this thread:

SOCIETY

Please, just watch it without spoilers. Yes, it looks like a 90s teen show. It does not end that way. You will love it, I promise.

DEMONS

The best zombie movie that most people have not seen. You will be amazed by the final battle.

Society is awesome. You know it's building up to something but that something is just crazy.

Demons is incredibly 80s. Simple, effective, if underwhelming.

DAGON. inspiration for Resident Evil 4. kind of mediocre acting and production values, but the film gets so much right.

The acting was all over the place, but it's a great movie IMO.

The best thing about Demons is Simonetti's kick-ass title theme.

I absolutely loved it back in the 80's, but one time I was watching it and something occurred to me which pretty much killed it for me... Beware my spoilertext!

Every major gore-scene in the film is directly lifted from somewhere else. It really is a kind of mid-eighties "splatter's greatest hits". Its very obvious if you are actually looking for it, and it really sucks the life out of the movie.

I agree Society is a gem. Well worth checking out.

I just watched a Japanese "found footage" movie called Noroi: The Curse. IIRC it was recommended to me if, not in this thread, another thread on GAF.

Whilst not scary per se, it was quite unsettling to watch at times. I fully recommend it.

I recently watched The Howling and The Relic.

The Howling was brilliant 80s horror cheese, and The Relic was a surprisingly competent 90s monster movie. I recommend both if you're interested.

The Quiet Family

Black comedy at its finest, not underappreciated, but a lot of people doesen't know about this awesome movie

and Tsukamoto's Haze

@Noroi is amazing :3

Sorry for bumping this thread again, but I need a name from some horror movie. Its about 2 young guys(17 years old or a little older I think). One guy is a rocker kinda dude and the other guy is a christian kinda guy who is always friendly, but one day he is getting jealous from that rocker kinda guy and he is bringing up satan I think, so he becomes very evil.

Also another horror movie where every human in the graveyard is transformed into a ugly creature (I think I saw a banana head or something like that)

Two underappreciated genre entries which are probably behind only the original Halloween for my favorites in the genre:

Sure, its sort of a road movie/black comedy/exploitation/70's homage/horror hybrid, but its goddamn great.

B000FAOC2M.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Quite possibly the best horror remake ever. Its better than the original by a fair margin.
I love both of these. Very brutal and unsettling movies.

I wouldn't call Monsters a horror movie, it's more of a love drama set within the backdrop of an ecological disaster brought on by aliens. I ended up liking it a lot, though.

Not exactly a horror movie, but it creeps me out.

Ditto for this one.

I am not one to poop on other people's likes, but I am shocked that you're serious. Unless I'm thinking of something else, isn't the Gate a horrible 80's piece of camp crap? I mean, I don't remember if the actual movie was even serious or not.

edit: I'll vote Prince of Darkness for underappreciated, although its got some cheese. Session 9 is a slow burner, but I enjoyed it.

You may be thinking of the sequel. The Gate scared the beejesus out of me when I was a child. Especially the
Barbie doll leg in the eye

If you're a fan of DR I would also recommend 'House of 1000 corpses' I found it much more unsettling than DR, although DR is one of my favs.

Oh and thumbs up for whoever posted the Jack Ketchum stuff!
