Underrated Video Game Soundtracks

glNPbc6.jpg

VM Japan's soundtrack features a blend between traditional Japanese instrumentation with orchestral and electronic elements, resulting into a very unusual and completely different score you'd expect from Falcom, but certainly among the sound team's very best and most distinctive. I honestly rank this game's soundtrack among Falcom's top 5 soundtracks of all time (which is a statement I don't say lightly!), and also made me realize how profilitic and versatile Falcom composers can really be. It was also Atsushi Shirakawa (now known as Tenmon - a famous anime composer)'s last contribution to Falcom, composing around half of the soundtrack.

Have some very awesome and sweet tracks from the soundtrack - Alternately, here's a YouTube playlist to the complete soundtrack.

· Alone in the Moonlight (Dat killer synth at 2:11!)
· Narrative of an Illusion
· Travelling Skies (Fantastic!)
· Warriors (A 5 MINUTES LONG WITHOUT LOOPING character select theme. Crazy!)
· Rainy Landscape
· Distant Blazes
· Into the Crimson Sky (Gorgeous!)
· Master of Chaos -The Trial- (Superb!)
· Gathering of the Fates (INCREDIBLE!)
· An Ill Omen (Great track - be sure to absolutely check out the remix at the bottom!)
· An Elegant Banquet (Very elegant, as the title indicates!)
· How They Flee when Night Falls
· Burning Sands (Spectacular!)
· https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZBniYtEtG8"]An Ill Omen -Indian Version-[/URL] (Just perfect!)

Give it a listen if you can - you'll be blown away!

You weren't wrong, this is great.

I also want to mention Yggdra Union's OST. I think it's underrated because the game itself is. I will post links when I get home, but I love Gulcasa's theme for example.

Also, the SMT devil survivor series has an amazing OST.

Goemon's Great Adventure (N64)

The entire Soundtrack. Its huge and 95% of the songs are awesome. The rest are just good. But very few know this. Its in my top 5 soundtracks of all time, even though i don't care that much for the game itself.

Such a great soundtrack I'd say my favourite track is Oede Town right at the start so catchy.

While I'm sure not many of you played this, I loved this game when I was growing up :D.

Green Heart Forest
Wet Stone Lake
Woody Arena

And there is tons more :D. This game had some really great music and was a really nice surprise; a Nickelodeon video game, being THIS good, not to mention be a unique IP with no cartoon attached to it, was really something. Heck, a Cartoon was made based off this game series :).

This thread is more about relatively unknown (not-rated) soundtracks than underrated soundtracks (and you also have people mentioning examples like Nier and Bastion, which makes no sense in either case).

What I would say is underrated is Mass Effect 2's soundtrack as people love to crap on ME2's soundtrack to put ME1's on a pedestal.

It's mainly frustrating when someone says ME2 has too much of a orchestral sound (usually implying that orchestra music is less interesting, a dumb sentiment in itself) versus ME1 having more electronic. The problem is that's false and comes off as a meme that got its legitimacy from blind (deaf?) repetition. ME1 features a lot of orchestra sounding music and ME2 a lot of electronic music, and in both cases they mostly feature music that sounds like both. Consider how important tracks in ME1 like The Presidium, Sovereign's Theme, and the climax's Victory are pretty much entirely "orchestral" and that most other themes are like the Main Theme and Normandy in how they rely really heavy on traditional string and drums in addition to the electronic sound like you'd expect of any "hollywood" (this is suppose to be a bad thing for some people) soundtrack. It's worth noting mostly the same people, namely Jack Wall, worked on both. I think it may be the case that people judge ME2 entirely on its orchestrated title theme and imbue it with their hardcore gamer victim complex because how they feel about the ME1->ME2 transition in other respects, and this is despite the instances of the main theme of ME1 being mostly orchestral.

Now, to actually get on point, what I appreciate most about ME2's soundtrack is how there is a theme dedicated to each character for their recruit and loyalty missions, in addition to central missions getting their own themes. What's special about these themes while they stretch out for the entire mission, they actually change several times (e.g., multiple background and battle themes) and get more intense with as you progress through the level (of course, you can't see the dynamism listening to the single tracks on the official OST). To name I think show this off well and to follow up on my counter-criticism above: Thane, Samara, and Tali (probably my favorite example of this).

The songs outside these mission themes are in no way lacking either. Illusive Man's theme is probably one of the very best themes in the entire series right next to the iconic galaxy map theme, New Worlds. The Upper Afterlife theme is the most memorable of the series's club themes, used in the series's most important club. Suicide Mission is actually a fantastic theme, probably one of the better uses of the series's main theme (which itself has been usurped by New Worlds). I'm a big fan of ME2's atmosphere, champion it as the best atmosphere of the series and one of the best of the previous generation, and the music obviously plays a huge role in that. The game itself is a flawed cover-shooter, but the overall atmosphere, the TV show momentum with its episodic missions, and the character-centric heist film approach complementing BioWare's style of characterization makes it a engaging game.

Let this meme die.

Elia Cmiral's fantastically beautiful soundtrack for The Last Express summons up an entire world. It beautifully captures the flavor of the era the game is set in.

I challenge anyone to listen to this track and not be compelled to hunt down and play the game.

Loved Arcana on the SNES, OP. Good stuff.

As I type this, I'm currently jamming to VVVVVV's soundtrack.

I know Cavanagh's games have a cult following (I'm a card-carrying member myself) so I don't know if it falls into the 'underrated' category or not, but since I seem to be the one introducing
forcing
my friends and co-workers to stuff like this all the time, I can say that it's definitely underappreciated.

I'll need more time to think and reply to people's nice posts, but

This thread is more about relatively unknown (not-rated) soundtracks than underrated soundtracks.

this is true.

My old pick was Final Fantasy III, but I think the rerelease got people to pay attention to the 3rd best Final Fantasy soundtrack (IX, VI, III, XII).

Let me go with Billy Hatcher And The Giant Egg/Giant Egg: Billy Hatcher's Great Adventure, a character whose debut wasn't perfect and was post-console Sega, so it was killed without a 2nd thought. I appreciate the cameos and references since, but this soundtrack is high-budget and well-curated. It's essentially Arcade Sega's version of the Yoshi series soundtracks, which is a wonderful idea that lands it somewhere in Katamari Land. http://vgmdb.net/album/1537

I'll also say Battle Garegga, which obviously has Cave composer ties. It has real techno, austere, sinister, and piercing, real trance, flowing, constantly progressing, and soothing, and a whole host of genres done properly rather than "video-gamey." http://vgmdb.net/album/2709

Just gonna say, this must be the best farewell of any Falcom musician I've heard. The album release credits each musician with specific tracks they worked on, and so far Shirakawa's done the best pieces, frequently outdoing himself in genre hybridization and developing themes. What a mensch; the whole soundtrack's great but Shirakawa owns it like no one else.

The album release doesn't credit who did what, though. The source of the composer credits actually comes from the Chinese version of the VM Japan Power-Up Kit (which is some sort of expansion) - the disc contains a text file under the folder "/VMJP/BGM/" called "BGMLIST.TXT", which reveals all the info.

I can confirm this file is nowhere to be found in the Japanese version. The file was written in Shift-JIS code, so I suspect it to be resides by Falcom that *somehow* made its way in the Chinese version. Perhaps the Chinese publisher/distributor (T-Time Technology) had something to do with it?

But yes, Shirakawa/Tenmon is the one who truly shines throughout the entire soundtrack. Not to discount Sonoda though! - "The Eastern Cherries", "Rainy Landscape", "Trouble Ahead" and "Into the Crimson Sky" are some of my absolute favorites.

One hell of a way to go out with a bang!
