Epic Games has released a new version of Unreal Engine 4 to all developers. Version 4.23 adds the Chaos physics & destruction system, brings many Ray Tracing optimization improvements & adds beta support for Virtual Texturing.

Going into more details, Chaos is Unreal Engine's new high-performance physics and destruction system. This system is available to preview in Beta form with the 4.23 release. With Chaos, users can achieve cinematic-quality visuals in real-time in scenes with massive-scale levels of destruction and unprecedented artist control over content creation.

On the other hand, Ray Tracing received many optimizations and stability improvements in addition to several important new features. Version 4.23 improves Denoiser quality for Ray Traced features and increases Ray Traced Global Illumination quality.

Epic Games has also improved support for multi-bounce Ray Traced Reflections by falling back to Reflection Captures in the scene. This means that intra-reflections (or reflections inside of reflections) that are displaying black, or where you've set a max reflection distance, will fall back to these raster techniques instead of displaying black.

Last but not least, Unreal Engine 4.23 adds beta support for Virtual Texturing. This tech enables developers to create and use large textures for a lower and more constant memory footprint at runtime.

For more details about it, you can visit its official website!

Just get Unreal 4.5 DONE for next-gen consoles and I'll be happy.
Technically speaking, is there really a reason it needs to be platform specific?

UE4 supports mobile platforms and even the Nintendo Switch. Unless they decide to rewrite everything from scratch and make it DX12 compliant, it's safe to say the engine will remain the same on next gen platforms but with more processing power to take advantage of.

The bolded is what I'm hoping for.

I mean that's what they will do. Engine will remain the same mostly, there will just be some new internal platform abstraction layer and potentially a couple new hardware access points (things like making use of new buttons).

4.23 is a great release but that chaos is still source only is a bit disappointing. I hoped to just jump into it when I come back from Hungary.

Keep in mind, even the original UE3 (UDK) was given extended life and upgraded to support DX11. This was how we still ended up with Batman Arkham Knight.

UE4 will definitely support DX12 in which case, what's the difference?

Since Epic clearly wants to support mobile devices, we'll have to wait until the technology catches up before they release another major revision.

🙄 🙄 :pie_unamused: :pie_unamused: at the bolded. But you're probably right.

It's actually a good thing. The money made from licensing the engine to mobile developers means more money going back to supporting the engine.

And mobile tech is rapidly evolving. Since optimization is crucial, it means we can expect the same features to run even faster on PC/Console.
Imagine ray tracing running on a smartphone. If tech advances that far, then it means we can expect mass adoption of it on more powerful platforms.

Hmmmmm.....now you've peaked my interest.

Not just ray tracing, but VR as well.

We have to face the facts and admit that mobile is here to stay. I say this as a person who didn't even own a smartphone until around 2016. But the tech is moving fast and there's clearly an audience that numbers in the billions. If Epic can milk that to help put funds into the engine development, then it would be too stupid of them to ignore.

Basically, it's like how last gen, developers would make Wii games to help fund AAA stuff on PS3/360. We didn't have to like it, but it was the only way to pay the bills for better graphics.

It's hilarious how much UE is capable of and then when a product gets released it's Street Fighter 5.

but games , engine is fone, but games, i mean besides those large AAA games that using this engine i cant find other look so good , some games even look bad using this engine , or nothing special. And i thought game with unreal 4 engines will be like next gen step .. but its not .
like when they show new cryengine update , you know you will see most amazing stuff in game like Hunt Showdown. but for me even GEars 5 looks just ok , its very linear and plenty low res textures in corners and such, i cant see Gears 5 as amazing looking game and for sure not best looking as most said online. yes i have it , i played it and its just ok looking .. i mean textures are not most important thing really if its no freedom, not many going on , physics not excisting , lighting is just ok , i cant see it as best looking game at all.

It's an engine, not a magic box that gives you ze bestest games 3v3r.

If you put low res texture in, you're gonna get low res textures. When you look at a cryengine update, you know you are gonna see good stuff in Hunt Showdown because Crytek develops Hunt Showdown....
As always, it comes down to a) budget and b) hardware power.

now imagine them using all this shit to make the most gfx intensive unreal tournament ever.

INSTEAD OF FUCKING FORTNITE SKINS

For a game, is it even viable to implement the level destruction physics shown in these videos? I get the impression the primary target of these effects are animations
