im baffled by this constant JRPG thing. who even mentioned an RPG? if i saw something that looked like any typical RPG character (japanese or otherwise) i would be about 2x as disappointed with the design.

i dont have PS here at work so i cant really demonstrate, but if you try to draw in a skeleton for the bioware character and then do the same for the UT character, the UT character looks ridiculous! does no one see this? you could do the same comparison using a master chief screenshot as your basis.

wouldnt that complaint mirror those that people made regarding the Magna Carta designs?
 
Technically excellent, but man I'm losing faith in Western FPS developers. Not just bad art, HORRENDOUS art! Same goes for GoW, though not to this degree.
 
Somone posted pics of a Bioware game and we get a Japanese art comment, hmmmm. Western doesn't suck, we're just going thru a phase where everything has to look like an technicolored armored commando or steroids. People will evetually get sick of it and some devs with balls wll show us the way. Bioware kicks ass btw!

Don't be. It's not that UT's design is amazing or not derivative, it's that all the self-styled aesthetes who perennially pop up to blast it have shit ugly avatars.

This type of art seems to be the exception not the rule nowadays. Most first person shooters try to go for a realistic look with a historical or modern warfare theme.
 
Well, BioWare isn't making an FPS of course (ME is a RPG), so maybe the art is just FPS syndrome? I'd love to see what Retro Studios' artists could so with UE3 if they were using it.

Same thing with Too Human, not an FPS, and I happen to like the creature/machine models that they've made and the environment art, and Baldur does look a little bit better than the Epic Games characters, though he still doesn't seem "right" to me.

I want more horror first person shooters! There was some budget vampire first person shooter a while back I kinda liked (can't remember the name off hand). I also wanna see a FPS that has shitloads of zombies.

Yeah, that would be incredible. So many different themes they can use, but they all seem to want to do the same couple of themes over and over.
 
I want to play an FPS with disney/pixar style animation. A break from mo-cap would be cool.

I really hope they dont release this game in 2007 :( Quake 4 and doome were huge dissapointments.
 
I'm looking forward to the online play this game will offer. I can't say I was in love with Unreal on the xbox 180, but hopefully that'll change when this new one comes out.

Unreal on Xbox != Unreal on PC. Even the original Unreal Championship which was pseudo based on UT, was based on UT2003, which sucked massively and was promptly overwritten in the annals of history by UT2004.

I would say that HL2 has the best game art from the last few years. It's pretty amazing stuff.

Firstly I'm saying the people arguing back and forth about how bad or amazing the artstyle is are tools. I know it's GAF tradition but it's tedious and the artstyle doesn't seem to be a huge leap from the other games.

Secondly I'm saying that if this is what the final game looks like and the gameplay remains faithful to the other Unreal Tournament games, I'll be fucking happy.

agreed. yet i still stand by my comments regarding art direction. i can't understand people who DONT wnat to discuss art direction in games. its an integral part and a large part of the budget is devoted to it. i never said this game will some how play poorly. iu expect this to play great and wish i had a PC up to the task.

no, i agree.

aesthetically, it's a lot more appealing than ut2k7 or gow..

but it just doesn't look to be something that's pushing the system.

i mean, it looks almost current-gen.

I know and you backed up your stance with sound reasoning and that's fair enough but that would put you in the minority in this thread. I just get tired of seeing the same 4/5 word comments in threads related to UT2007 or Gears of War. I do realise it's stupid of me to moan about art discussion in a screenshot thread but it's late and I become irrational after 2am ;)

I should also add that you don't need a PC, just get a PS3 (supposedly with mouse + keyboard support) :D

yeh i think ive over stated myself in this thread so ill stop but i really wanted to push that you can have intelligent discussion about this. my crusade :) . i agree with you about the 4/5 word comments because thats the type of thing that hinders discussion.

i just cant get into FPS on consoles. maybe this gen will be the one that changes me. i hope so because i miss the intensity of combat and have no plans to make the investments necessary to keep up with PC gaming. I plan on giving it a try with UT though.
 
1) The art is horrendous

2) I don't really care because this is fucking UT and the game still blows me socks off.

3) Unfortunately, I'm about totally fed up with this genre, so this is all lost on me anyway.

So has this been confirmed as a PS3 exlcusive. It's just that in the UK version of Gamesmaster they have the game down for a X360 & PS3 release.
 
last two UT's have had this Warhammer/egyptian thing going on whats not so ugly as confusing.

GoW takes the Warhammer look even further as well.

It's not been confirmed as an exclusive, and probably isn't, but no other console versions have been announced yet.

Well to be fair, those calling it bad art probably didnt grow up with games like doom, quake, Unreal and dont have a soft spot for the genre.

I thought this thread highlighted the difference in technically impressive and a game that actually looks good. QW has a way better art-direction than this game thus it actually looks better despite having a way older engine.

BTW why bring Zelda into this? Bu-bu-but Zelda lolz
