Upgrade PC or snag a PS4?

Yes it fucking well does!

Star Citizen,
Elite Dangerous,
Civ Beyond Earth
are all PC only and not already out and those are just big budget titles off the top of my head.
If you want to include lower budget and games that are already out, you are going to face a very long list.

So in other words upgrade your PC if you like space.

If you want the exclusives, go for PS4.
This
If you have something you like on PS not coming to PC then go for it
You could always wait for cheaper PC cards later on
Also this is sexy

I'm really interested in playing AC: Unity and GTA 5 this fall, but I'm pretty sure maxwell won't have launched by then and I'm afraid that a r9 290 or cheap gtx 780 won't be able to hold up all that long since they are based on older tech. Furthermore, if I get a new GPU in the next 6 months I feel as if my CPU (i5 2500K) will become too old and I'll need to dump money into that anyways. Basically, if I want to have a PC that performs well for the future it seems like I'm going to need to dump quite a bit of money into it over the next couple years.

As much as I want to play or have bought every PC exclusive listed they're mostly all cRPG titles or 4X games. For me that is great, but the era of big "AAA" exclusives like Crysis seems to be over. People just need to expand their tastes though because those are some incredibly ambitious and/or great games.

Star Citizen is the big exception though, can't wait to see how it develops.

Sounds like you already decided on a PS4 then.

Game looks great to me. (stolen from the alpha thread)

Looks like a slightly touched up Halo 4 and all the gameplay I've seen is a snorefest. Everything about this game screams fabricated hype like Titanfall. Anyway, my point is that there are better arguments for PS4 vs. PC than Destiny. (BloodB, Uncharted, etc.)

PC gaming is a huge pain in the butt. I've been doing it for twenty years, but even with my more the capable PC, I don't want to mess with Steam update, Win updates, new drivers, Origin, Uplay, etc. By the time I can play something its time for bed.

I have been having the same debate myself and will make a month by the end of the year.I was planning on building a complete new gaming PC this holiday season, would that be a smart time to do so? My current rig is ancient at this point.

CIV
DOTA
LoL
Wasteland 2
Pillars of Eternity
Amnesia
Divinity original sin
Star Citizen
etc

I think they do, bro.

DOTA is phenomenal.
This is going OT but you forgot the GOAT which is:

SC2!!!

Everything else on that list is ehhhhh uhhhh ehhhhh

Star Citizen will be incredible

I'm almost in the exact same scenario as you. I have a 6970 2gb and a 2500k (not yet overclocked). Personally I'll be getting a new graphics card later this year.

I'll also pick up a PS4 during the first price drop, but all multiplatform games will be done on my PC.

You are going to get a huge amount of people saying to go for PS4 because of the Uncharted announcement. You will be better off without a PS4 because the PS4 is much more expensive. Pay for online, expensive games and worse performance than a upgrade is not a good deal for sub 30fps games and a cinematic experience from Naughty Dog.

It sounds pretty obvious that you want a PS4. Wait for the games you want to come out and buy a PS4 then hold out for a year or two and get a new GPU/rig when a moderate PC will leave this gen in the dust.

Steam updates automatically, driver updates also happen automatically(go into your driver settings) as do the other services listed. Pretty fool proof.

Was in a similar position and just decided to go PS4. Getting $150 for my PS3 from Gamestop helped make that decision for me (I had just gotten TLoU/Batman bundle for $200 this past November, and most of my games were PS Plus freebies). Ubi Soft's poor PC optimization trends worry me, and I'm looking forward to Far Cry 4. I also really want to play Destiny this fall when it's the "big thing" instead of begging and waiting for a PC port.

Also, the PS4 is still fresh tech for multiplats, but it wont be forever. So You can always upgrade your PC later when the difference becomes much bigger, but you may be getting less out of your PS4 if you get it too late.

Half of those are automatic, and the other half will take a few moments at most and come maybe once a month. If you'd been PC gaming for 20 years you'd have probably have managed to electrocuted yourself 10 years ago given how much easier it is these days.

Judging by his post it isn't :p

OP have you thought about a wii U?
Actually has quite a few good games out, no online paywall, most of the games are already discounted, no inferior multiplat shit just nintendo exclusives
And if you're into buying a system based on short teasers there is zelda to get all excited about
If you get a wii u instead of a ps4, in 5 years you'll have saved enough money from not having to pay for online to buy a ps4 (probably at <250 euros by then like ps3 was) and by the the empty hype will have been seperated from the good games, which by then 'll also be on sale.

I'm in a similar position having a 2600k and grabbed a 780 amp edition on a great deal. I want to upgrade my rig but there's nothing logical to go with right now. Waiting on maxwell and some new CPU tech to hit. But I have a ps4 and my rig still plays games well enough.

IMO I'd probably go ps4 while waiting until later for some fun new PC stuff. I'm guessing all that will hit in 2015 some time.

AAA exclusives, you mean.

Plenty of great exclusives on the platform, past, present and future.
I actually think PC may have the advantage in raw numbers, not that this means much if you hate the exclusives anyway.

But I suspect the highest end PC games will be multiplats whether due to being THAT high end or due to poor optimization (hey Ubisoft!) so I'd definitely just wait for now. PC hardware will only get better/cheaper, and consoles are more awesome with lots of great games to play ASAP. Could get into PS+ now though just to pile up the free games.

You act like consoles don't update every damn time you turn them on nowadays.

Every single thread we can always find that guy. They follow the exact same style of post essentially verbatim.

Set themselves up as an expert by saying how long they have been playing on PCs for, somehow still find it difficult to do the simplest tasks that are mostly automated at this point. The irony is funny, but how does this happen every single time?

He forgot the best stuff, Xenonauts is about to leave early access (it's more X-Com than X-Com 2012 was), Kerbal Space Program continues to be the best shit ever and Hearts of Iron 4 is going to be 2015 GOTY (even tho nobody is going to recognize this obvious truth!)

People looking for a "PC Uncharted" or something are going to be crushingly disappointed. It's a different landscape if you're only counting "things you can get on PC and nowhere else".

Have you SEEN Bloodborne?

Your PC's graphics will always be better than the PS4's if you get a good card. You have to make the decision on whether the graphical upgrade is worth missing out on exclusive games. (I'm going to upgrade my PC next year or the year after.)

The gap right now isn't huge unless you want to run games at 60fps or greater than 1080p.

I have GTX 570 from like 3 years ago but it still runs everything I throw at it. Maybe not with 60fps at ultra settings but it can usually handle high with ease. There are always going to be games on consoles you wont ever be able to play on PC so I'd say investing in a PS4 is the better option at the moment. I'm sure your 6950 will hold up for general gaming for at least another year or two. But I guess if you do most if not all your gaming on PC, then go for upgrading the GPU.

Can't even find a single post in his history that deals with PC gaming.

This is such a pile of shit.

Upgrade PC now, snag PS4 in 2015.

This is the biggest lie lol.

your CPU will be totally fine for the foreseeable future

buy nothing now and wait for 20nm and late 2015 if you actually want those ps4 exclusives

The lack of actual discussion of playing games in the Gaf Steam thread is pretty damning proof that many PC gaffers struggle with the same PC shit eating up all their play time before bed.

Like what? So I know what to avoid. The only time I ever have issues is when I add 100 mods to Fallout NV and have to figure out the load order so it won't crash.

I would advise waiting on both upgrading and getting a PS4 if you can, but if you're really disappointed with your gaming experience and need something now, I'd get a PS4.

If the games you care about on PC are mostly also coming to the PS4 and then there are the PS4 exclusive games, so I think the PS4 will be great on games. If the choice is between the PS4 and a similarly priced 290, I would recommend the PS4 if you plan on getting the PS4 someday anyway.

If you're going to have to build a new computer in a year or two, I would recommend waiting on upgrading and just get a PS4 if you want to play.

Also: I have the low-end Maxwell 750 ti in my Dell. I'm really impressed with it, I think some games look better on it than PS4. I'm sure the high-end Maxwell will be awesome! You should definitely consider it when you do your next build.
