So he wanted to come of witty and superior, then when it backfires he crawls back like a coward ASAP by editing and then did damage control because he fears getting banned?

This is a sequence of actions that's not about feeling sorry what he said, he's feeling sorry that he risked his account.

of course i feel sorry i risked my account, but that's besides the point. and call it cowardly for editing, but i did because it was offending ppl, it wasn't merely an edit in an attempt to save my account, with all the quotes the came after the comment is still visible. but boy does this board love the pile on, and drama that follows, rather than getting on point with the topic. i took a risk and it only backfired because of the hypocrisy that's so apparent. one only needs to look at any thread involving china, neo-cons, republicans, right wingers, to see comments no different that come off "witty and superior"

Also, editing does not redeem a post and what has been said. There's no real life equivalent of 'editing'.

I'm not even offended, I just don't like people editing posts like a coward.

Being an embassy in that country is so not safe. Rest in peace.

I seriously doubt that considering he is already quoted like ten times.

It was a stupid remark, he realises it.. now let it be.

Honestly, if it wasn't for an large police force, I could see the Tea Party lynching folks and rioting.

yup. but over 4 billion people won´t get bothered with both religions. so its not christians against muslims. its a minority of a minority (muslims and christians combined) that keeps wrecking with our planet.

What consequences? Bombing the shit out of ruins created by your bombs last year again?

Yes, munitions deployed by NATO had no purpose whatsoever.

The resistance asked, begged for foreign air support, so NATO gave it.

NATO created a no-fly zone over Libya, took out armored columns and allowed the resistance to take out Ghadaffi (Is there a universally accepted spelling of this?)

Would you have rather they put boots on the ground?

You know what I find bigoted? Killing people for depicting an old man. Snarky comments on the net kinda pale into insignificance in the grand scheme of things.

Yeah, funny how people are raging more about an anonymous internet comment than, oh, the murdering.

But hey, must deflect all possible criticism as much as possible. If anyone religious does anything bad, they are INSTANTLY not a part of the religion. It's amazing how many popes and imams and bishops and religious leaders post on internet forums!

Fucking idolatry, plain and simple. This kind of shit needs stamping out.

They refuse any depiction of Muhammed for fear of it leading to idolatry, but in turn they treat him like a sacred idol.

Yup, it's a fucking joke. I can't even be arsed with it any more, it's the only subject I refuse to discuss on this site.

All this over over a dead old man. Fuck me.

Precisely. Makes my piss boil.

No, but they're are responsible for the security in the area. It's clearly a failure on their part as well.
Libya is in chaos. NATO sponsored government can not control militiaman and the non-stop trafficking of weapons (All kinds of weapons). The Gov tried to restore order and they've built unreliable security forces made out of Islamists extremists. If any Islamist extremist wants to bomb UK embassy for example, the security personnel will stay there and watch and might help the attackers finish their job.

"resistance"

How about call it as what it truly was: foreign islamic jihadist who has been wreaking havoc all over the place in the name of "people's resistance against a tyrant"?

Last year: Libya
This year: Syria
Next year: Iran(?)

In a day and age in which online bullying which results in suicide can and land you in prison, shouldn't the DOJ be looking into Jones for his actions inciting the murder of a U.S. ambassador?

I'll tell Shaykh Muhammed Al-Yaqoubi that he is actually foreign and a jihadist.

Syrian conspiracy garbage, don't fall for it cuz.

You have to realize though that even though one person said it, it doesn't mean he was the only one. It's a remark that needs some thought be put behind it.

By saying 'religion of peace', one basically linked this incident to all people of the Islam religion.

Now while those extremist are very likely Muslim, what that comment did is comparing these people to every single Muslim, including people in your own country, to a terrorist.

See what I'm getting here? A comment like that is like a little seed. Now imagine if no one even got bothered by that comment. Now imagine if 9 out of 10 posts were like that. Well, it's the internet, you would say, so it should be harmless. But once people are conditioned to think like that, it's not that many steps further when drastic real life behavior starts to be based on these beliefs.

It's not really about crusading this guy (I couldn't care less) or about making a fuss over nothing nor is it about getting over stuff. It's about a remark that I think should warrant a discussion in this thread (and not 'just get over it' because some guy is apologizing for it and people are defending his behavior, which isn't even interesting). When the first thing that pops into some people's head is: religion = this = all religious people are like this, it becomes scary.

Hey, he saw some extremely disturbing shit, posted a cleanly ironic remark, immediately edited and apologized. Cut this guy some slack, will you?

For fuck's sake, talk about extremists.

On topic: Awful situation. What are the most likely consequences of this?

No conquences. NATO and co caused this situation when they deposed of Gadaffi, they deal with the consequences of meddling in affairs that don't concern them.

Thanks.

There are fierce clashes between the Libyan army and an armed militia outside the U.S. consulate," said Abdel-Monen Al-Hurr, spokesman for Libya's Supreme Security Committee.

"The American security guards inside the building fired at the militia as they were trying to enter and attack it."

He said roads had been closed off and security forces were surrounding the building. He said the clashes were outside the consulate building.

"There is a connection between this attack and the protests that have been happening in Cairo," Hurr said.

"They are trying to take advantage of the security situation in Libya and cause more instability in the country."

They don't call it Benghazi for nothing.

And sanctions and/or drone attacks are gonna solve this problem.... how?
I'm not suggesting either, but I'd like them to deal with all the extremists in the same way as Egypt did last week. If the police can't deal with problem, bring in the military.

Yeah, because the acts of a couple of guys, whom (who?) we know nothing about, represent 2.2 billion Muslims. Good job.

Actually the book represents 2.2 billion. The book that says to kill infidels and you know who infidels are.

All religion is evil imo I don't treat Islam any different and neither should people who act like secular muslims are the 'real' muslims and the devout ones (who take their rules from the actual book) are the ones making a bad name out of it.

It's not Libya that attacked but extremist militias, let's not blame this horrible tragedy on the Libyan people.

I think you might a bit too late in telling people not to make wild generalizations in order to find a target for their gut reaction.

We are in for a show.

That's a bit of a stretch, considering how altercations with police at Tea Party rallies are fairly low relative to other such political protest events.
I doubt he's being serious. Most likely just trolling.

At least, I hope. Because knowing there are people that ignorant and stupid wandering around in society rather than locked up in a padded room on copious amounts of anti-psychotics is unsettling.

Ugh. I really hope (but doubt) this isn't the escalation of that stupid video shit.

US ambassador to an Arab country killed on 9/11, that could end well.

Are these the same guys we helped (armed?) last year?

Yep, timing is just fantastic. I don't expect much in this election season though.

Islam is as bad as any other religion. The only problem is that at this point in time, Muslims tend to take their religion much more seriously than other groups. I have no problem calling out violent and bigoted Christians and Jews when I see them.

But these two religions have weakened substantially, while Islam is stronger than ever. I would say that Islam is currently the most powerful political ideology in the world, and since it is based on antiquated notions of morality, the results are terrible.

I doubt he's being serious. Most likely just trolling.
Perhaps, but calm down a bit. Chi has many posts here and is as smart and sane as the rest of us. Don't get all bent out of shape because of his opinion.

After all, we are using this in part as a teachable moment about the virtues of free speech, right?

What's crazy about thinking Tea Partiers are extremist?

Yeah it is called generalisation and it happens very often. Not only with muslims, but also catholics, chinese, republicans etc. It is wrong, he knows, he already apologized after three people said something about it (this all happened before your post).

You say it's not a crusade, but it does seem like one. You seem a lot more upset about his ignorant remark than the issue at hand.

I would consider myself devout. Haven't killed anyone lately.

The devout ones struggle with extremists backed by lovely democratic states who would rather back dictatorships than not secure resources for themselves. Then there are the extremists who they don't back, who are leant credence and popular support when they strike at what many Muslims view as an Imperial force within their countries.

Don't try and divorce any of this from the political situation. All of you are surely mature enough to know better. What is going on here looks a whole lot like using a tragedy for a nice bit of atheist point scoring.

Violent reprisals, or threats, in response to insults to the Muslim prophet are nothing new, indeed they pre-date the violatile mood of the Middle East of the last decade. But what is new is the popular thinking amongst Muslims everywhere, fundamentalist and moderate, isthat they are being purposefully victimised or targeted, a mindset that has been present for almost a decade now. The last several years has seen the fermentation of suspicion and anger. An example of this were how the cartoons of previous were viewed not only from a context "they're insulting our Prophet", but predominantly "Just another way of kicking us"; it was seen as an extension of a preconceived war against Islam and its people. So the difference between now and then is that this narrative of anger is more mainstream and more nuanced; it isn't seen as just insults, or satire, or teddy bears but something more. The fact that people always die from these is terrible and frankly depressing. It's like watching a mob mentality on a global scale. None of it makes any sense, and yet it consistently happens and no lessons are ever learnt

You going to make a repeat of your "u mad?" meltdown?

he said as he quoted anecdotal evidence. Go on, tell us again how the BBC and CNN are all working for the CIA and any source not damning the intervention is biased as you happily link shit like infowars.

Could have fooled me.

Taking a tragedy like this, immediately after it happens, and using it politically in the way he did takes disgusting to a whole new level.

Using it politically is doing like Romney and accusing Obama of apologizing for America, just because the Cairo embassy denounced the video.

In his first post he said he wasn't offended (he is), in his 2nd he said he couldn't care less (he does)...otherwise he's just fanning the flames in hope I get banned. If I really did offend him, then I'm sorry, but I can't help but think he's just pushing an agenda to get me banned, gaf does love drama.

and yes I did generalize, no more than these board generalize other groups like you so pointed out, thank you for that.
