US Retail Musings (1/13 - 1/19)

Microsoft did drop the ball big time, but so did Nintendo. All things considered, I'm sure MS is pleased the Wii only out outsold 360 by 90,000 units in December. It could've been a LOT worse if Nintendo had enough supply.

Yeah, but the Wii shortages were because of capacity.

I have to wonder if retailers refused to allow MS to ship too much because of the channel stuffing that happened last year. They may be bearish on 360 demand. I'm sure they also aren't happy that MS convinced them to greatly overestimate cat helmet demand.

PS3: Still sitting on tons of 40 and 80 gig units. Haven't sold any in a few weeks now. There was a guy trying to buy one the other with a phony traveler's check.
:lol :lol :lol :lol
Did he knock over any magazine racks after you wouldn't his check?

I'm real interested to see what you guys have to say about Burnout next week, so please pay close attention to those sales! NeoGAF seems to be buying more PS3 copies than 360 copies (according to early gamertag lists in the official thread), maybe this will be the first major cross-platform nextgen title to sell best on the PS3 in North America.

beermonkey@tehbias as long as it sales well, it does not matter, look at COD4 and AC.Both already sold over 1 million on the PS3.

Doubt it. As has been seen many times, GAF trends don't correlate to the overall market. The user base difference is just too large for multi platform titles to outsell their 360 counterparts in the US.

Lots of games end up selling for $10. How many of them sell 4 million units?
Every one that come with a controller for an extremely popular system that is extremely popular for local multiplayer games.

Just always looking for info that can help for the NPD prediction contests.

That makes it interesting too. Always fun to see ways in which we don't match the general public.

I wonder if people are more willing to jump on the PS3 bandwagon now that the format war is over.

Wouldn't surprise me.

Thank god you survived the NPD slaughter. I was wondering where my source of comedy would come from for the next couple of weeks!

Very nice info. Is it possible for you to do it every month (give January figure by early February, 1-2 week before NPD) ?
I agree that you should just share whatever that will not get you fired.

Do you think the slow week is caused by slowdown in US macro-economy (housing sub-prime scandal, stock market crash, weak USD etc) ? How would you compare January 2008 against January 2007, or even 2006 ?

The monthly thing seems like it might be more informative in terms of the big picture. These threads are very interesting, but given that they can be so dependent on the inventory situation of each store, it seems like giving these updates on a monthly instead of a weekly basis might level out some of those weekly inventory fluctuations.

This would bump the hardware sales, but would do jack shit nothing to improve the software sales.

i think most people are concerned about the hardware sales at this point

From what people are saying as long as the 80gig model of the PS3 is around overall sales maybe negatively effected unless both skus are available in similar quantities.

People are holding out for the 80gig model because no one wants to pay $400 for a console when there is a clearly better machine available for only $100 more which also includes a game. Sony need to get more 80gig models out there or stop it all together and remove the doubt/excuse.

Its bizzare that the 360 has stopped shipments maybe the have paused production line inorder to change the way they being made?

Looks like the Ps3 may well beat the 360 for the first time this month!

My Gamecrazy got 50 copies of Burnout Paradise for the 360. 35 are for pre-orders
For the PS3 we got 10 copies. 3 for pre-orders. We haven't got a Wii shipment in two weeks. We still got a few 360's. 2 Arcades and 2 Halo's. Haven't sold any in a week. We haven't had an Elite or Premium since Christmas Eve. We got 10 PS3's. 5 40 gig and 5 80 gig. Haven't sold any since Christmas.

But will MS be in a position like this again? I thought this was there big chance to actually build some momentum and i think they wasted it. Nintendo already has a huge amount of momentum behind it so this holiday really didn't mean that much.

If MS really wanted some momentum they should have lowered the price to $299, but then it seems they pretty much sold out anyway!

Maybe they are penting up demand so that they can lower the price and have a really good sales month...

Well, in PAL Land last week was rather slow as well.

Digifan

* No Wii's in, so no Wii sales

* A handfull of NDS units, all gone

* 15 PS3's ... all gone

* 10 Xbox 360's, Elite's gone, arcade left

* PS3 units ... sold like 4 over the holiday season ..one left

I'm remember one specific time where the PS2 had shortages: at the time Sony was prepping the PSTwo. Microsoft might be prepping a newer version or a price-cut, something big that involves getting a supply ready.

It certainly is odd. I wouldn`t be surprised if something doesn`t shake out. Doubt its a price cut, because it's the wrong time.

I went shopping around today at Best buy, Circuit city and 2 Walmarts in the Dayton, Ohio area looking for a cheap sound system. Out of curiosity I checked the gaming systems in stock. 360's and Wii's were completely sold out save for 2 Halo editions at Best Buy. 40 Gb PS3s were in stock everywhere, Best Buy had dozens. Only 80 GBs I saw was at one of the Walmarts I went to. Feel bad for anyone looking to upgrade to next gen this month.

Not me. You mentioned there were PS3s everywhere.

Well, they finally found a way to shift those Pea-Green consoles. Just don't make the others available!

Perhaps they are stockpiling in readiness for some big crime game that is on the horizon. Or they just maxed out their manufacturing capacity to get those falcons in stores over Christmas, and are now feeling the pinch of component shortages.

Why the hell is the 360 supply constrained?

It's sure as hell not supply constrained around here, nor in the 2 bigger cities north and south of me. My friend's EB has them, and still gets them in, and walking into a BB or CC, there's still piles of them. Just like there's more than enough PS3's to go around. The Wii is the only machine that I notice isn't to be found.

Very interesting. what part of the country do you live in?

I was out and about at a CC and a BB today and neither one of them had any of the systems in stock. Not even Halo or Arcade editions of the 360. I was pretty damn surprised.

i was in a wal-mart this afternoon and saw a premium, arcade, and elite 360, and 0 ps3s.

it is 2008, after all. ps3s will be hard to find unless you wait in line.

Cant wait for next weeks thread. If your store wasnt shipped any, make your own No More Heroes advertisments!

Actually, Target is making NMH online only.
:(

Also, I'd like to mirror AlteredBeast (I also work at a Target), I see pretty much the same things.
Also, we got a bunch of GH3 for the Wii in today. Sold out of most of them, as well. A girl and a bunch of her friends bought two.
PS3s seem to be selling more after the holidays, as well.
We've gone from one a month, to one every week almost. Not bad.

Ill add my two cents:

Wal Mart's system is showing the 360 Elite unit as deleted as well as the HD DVD ad on.

Havent seen Wii's since the end of December.

Yup, now that format war has ended and BR has won, your observation would be the norm.

I can't make threads so I'm just gonna post it here (this is from Bloomberg.com):
an. 22 (Bloomberg) -- Sony Corp., the world's largest video-game console maker, sold a record number of PlayStation 3 machines in Europe during the holiday shopping season after lowering prices to compete against Nintendo Co.'s Wii.

Sony, which began selling PlayStation 3s in Europe in March, shipped about 1.2 million consoles in the region during the five- week period ended Dec. 31, Kazuo Hirai, president of Sony's game division, said in a Bloomberg Television interview aired today. That's in line with U.S. shipments during the period, he said.
Higher sales, coupled with lower production costs, will reduce the company's operating losses related to PlayStation 3s by 90 percent to $158 million in the fiscal second half ending March 31, according to Dec. 27 estimates by Nikko Citigroup.
Missing the Target

Sony is expected to sell 8 million PlayStation 3s in the year ending March 31, missing its annual target by 27 percent, Daiwa said in a Jan. 18 report. Nintendo will probably sell 19 million Wii machines and Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft will ship 9.1 million Xbox 360 consoles, according to Daiwa.
If someone can make a thread, that would be great:

Didn't see that one coming. I wonder just how much of January's Wii production was shipped in December? :o

At this rate, the PS3 and 360 may both beat the Wii in January's NPD's. 0.o
