Valkyria Chronicles $19.96 at Walmart

The online inventory finder isn't very reliable. You're better off giving the stores a call to see if they have it.

Given the amount of NeoGAF love for this game and the art style, I've always had a bit of interest in Valkyria Chronicles, but I've never cared for the genre.

Is it worth picking up for those who don't like this type of game?

How is the difficulty? I really don't want to bogged down in too hard of a game.

Does the game do a good job teaching the player how to play effectively?

How is the pacing? Is it just one random battle after another?

Yup... I dont like RPG's or strategy games as well, but I had fun with it.

It does get difficult towards the end of the game, but it doesnt really get frustrating. Its a tough challenge for sure.

Yeah, it will tell you almost everything you need to know. However, its up to you how deeply you wanna get into the game. You can be VERY in-depth in how you choose your units, because some of them work well in one type of terrain, and they might get more skilled if they are in the same team as another person, etc etc. I personally didnt play it that way... You dont need to go crazy over all the details, its enjoyable if you play casually as well.

How is the pacing? Is it just one random battle after another?

The storyline is pretty good imo. I didnt care for characters other than the main 3-4 of them, but the story kept me going.

I got the game back at the Gamestop $30 sale in May I think it was. $20 is waaaaaaay too good for anyone to pass up.

What type of game do you dislike - is it RPGs in general or Strategy RPGs? It's Strategy RPGs you dislike, I'd say this one just may have enough interactivity to win you over. If it's RPGs in general, then still I think there's a chance you may like it because there's no random dungeon crawling or loot to collect or really worry about

Intelligent use of your units is sometimes necessary, and some levels are effectively a puzzle, but you can usually figure them out after 1 or two tries. It's only really tough if you insist on yourself getting A rankings on all the missions (which gives you nothing special btw).

They spell out for you all the strengths and weaknesses of your units and what types of terrain and situations give you advantages or disadvantages over the course of the first 5 or so missions. Other than that, it's up to you to use your tools wisely.

There are no random battles. Every single one serves the story: driving the filthy Imperials out of Gallia. Most have some sort of unique twist. There are skirmishes that you can replay repeatedly to earn money and XP, but they aren't strictly required (though I'd recommend a few now and then to stay ahead of the leveling curve).

I would assume so.

Basically as long as you can prove it's 20 bucks at Wal-Mart, you can get it for that price. If they don't believe you, they can call the store (they "have the right to") and you can shove it in their faces. It doesn't have to be in stock. I know, I've done it like five times.

So, if I went in to Best Buy and said "Wal-mart has this for $20. Check on it, asshole!", they'd match it?

If you printed out the webpage, brought it to them (hence, proving it like I said), then said that...

Yes.

I printed out the webpage and will be bringing it to my Walmart, and if they don't have it, I'll take it across the street and hope that Best Buy doesn't check to see if Walmart has it in stock (sometimes they do this and won't match if the other place is out of stock).

I already have two copies. I did my part.
I can't for the life of me figure out why you would buy two copies of any game. It's great that you like the game and want to support the developers but you really have the cash to burn to buy two copies?

that store finder is borked. it says there's only one Wal-Mart within 100 miles of the zip code I put in, even though there's at least a dozen Wal-Marts within 100 miles of me.

of course, the one it lists says it's out of stock on VC. at $20, I'd like to buy it even though I don't own a PS3. the game isn't going to be around forever...

I've also done it (for a select few games), and well, the answer is yes. If I didn't have "the cash to burn" I wouldn't do it!

I'll readily admit that it's not the best way to spend your money, but many people make some unwise decisions with their spending. Personally I think an extra $50 or so maybe once a year is rather acceptable.

I mentioned it in the VC thread but I ordered one on Amazon but the wait before they would ship was hella long. I went out to get a copy from a Gamestop and when I got back, I couldn't cancel the Amazon order anymore.

You may have something here!
1) If bestbuy was doing there price match policy right, they wouldn't Price match due to the local store being out of stock
2) I don't think Bestbuy sells the game, I tried buying it from them first, and my local store and there site didn't show the game.

One of my favorite games of all time. I've put about 70 hours into it so far. Only two more expert skirmishes left to go!

I'm going to best buy tomorrow to see if they will pm as my closest walmart had 0 copies. Going to check one more walmart tomorrow first though.

To those of you praising the game as your favorite:

What makes that so? Is it the art? is it the music? The story? I know its a fun game but certain things has to excel to make it your favorite.

All of the above, plus I love SRPGs, and I have a tendency to get attached to my units in games like SRPGs, so having an entire journal entry about their history to read is even more awesome.

The art, music and world are very nice... This game is bursting with personality, and I'd probably fall in love with it if it were a standard RPG.

BUT that's not the core appeal... the most exciting part is the never before seen gameplay style. Yes, it's a strategy RPG at heart, but the fact that you directly control characters and position them in a semi-active battle makes for very compelling gameplay. It's the thinking moments of FF Tactics without the occasional boredom that comes from not being in actual control. Moving characters around a 3D battleground, fortifying defensive positions, sending out lone units or full on attack squads.... the game gives me a buzz.

It's such a new gameplay style but really... so obvious I can't believe it wasn't done before. There should be Valkyria-clones, actually!

The primary reasons I love it are the gameplay and the characters. The secondary reasons are the art and the story.

Gameplay:
The gameplay is like nothing I have ever played before. Every move you make takes planning: knowing which direction you're going, what obstacles you're going to face, what returning fire you're going to take, and whether your character has enough hit points to survive the journey.

Shooting is relatively simple, but it requires gauging the best distance to attack - go up close and risk return fire or take more than one turn to get a kill? There is also a height advantage for cliffs because it's easier to get out of sight and grenades go farther.

The game rewards strategy for the most part, since a bad strategy will take a longer time to complete and you may lose some characters. There is both macro strategy and micro strategy:
Macro - moving your scouts up to one line while having your shocktroopers guard another line of constant enemy reinforcements.

Micro - forming a pincer attack to kill an elite special soldier. Example: In Elite skirmish there was an elite special sniper in a tower that would dodge any bullet that came his way. I killed him by blowing up his tower with a lancer, moving a scout behind him (although he turned around), and then shooting him in his (now back) with one of my snipers from across the map.

The missions are also varied, and require different strategies each time. There are missions for destroying a massive tank, destroying a vehicle with only non-explosives, killing all of the enemy units before they escape, racing to the finish line, and some missions even change objectives half way through.

Characters
Every one of the characters has an interesting back story, and this also comes through in their dialogue in the game. The VA really gives each character life, and that's what makes me attached to them. This extends to the main characters as well, and makes the story not just a simple good vs. evil scenario. The main characters develop over time and every one of them ends up a different person at the end. For the secondary characters, you learn more about them as you play with them.

Art style
I don't know if I really have to say anything about the art style. I think it fits the mood of the game perfectly and I wouldn't change anything except maybe some more interesting textures.

Story
The story is engaging enough to keep you playing, although there are some frustrating bits and some parts are a little generic. The way it deals with war, however, makes up for it. It shows how enemy soldiers are people too, and also deals with innocent deaths, an event that forever changes the characters. The DLC expands upon this when you learn more about Selvaria.

So I hope now you know why I think VC is awesome, and why you should definitely buy it at $20.

Technically, you are correct. However, my Best Buy doesn't care if it's out of stock at the Wal-Mart or not.

When I asked why (of course, I waited until AFTER my first purchase to ask), they said it's because they once had a guy who wanted a collection of DVDs price matched and when they called the closest Wal-Mart they discovered it was sold out. The guy, being stubborn, drove 30-something miles away and checked to see if the other Wal-Mart had it. They did and he drove all the way back to Best Buy just to get it price matched. And of course he did.

Needless to say, my local store has a policy where they would rather not just deal with it. YMMV.

In my defense, I thought the game had a lower shipment because of "scarcity" posts in the official thread.

Granted, I guess it is really no excuse because lots of my posts in that thread made lots of assumptions and leaps in logic.

Tried to like this game but hated it. I love SRPG's, but this one, not so much. For me, its the fact that I can't plan out my attack. I like having set values. Like this guy can move exactly this amount, etc. Also, if I start moving, enemies start shooting me. That infuriated me. The game became too unpredictable for my tastes.

I kinda wish the game was grid based.

But thats me.

Comes recommended.

The real-time element put an enjoyable spin on classic SRPG gameplay. Great post-processing filter and the (pseudo-)European setting is always something that appeals to me.

It had some serious balancing issues, but nothing's perfect. Too bad it bombed and they won't continue the franchise on consoles. :/

How do you know that? Also, there's still a lot of DLC planned for the PS3 version.

You know that works in your favor as well right? When enemies move on their turn, your troops get to fire back at them. In fact, I dare say that you can use that to your own advantage far more than the AI can. It's a two-way street, and while it may seem illogical, is fairly applied to both teams.

This is what i wanted to hear, attachment to character, because my favorite games also have my favorite characters. Waka from Okami, Kratos, Young Ocelot from MGS3, characters in FF games. Sad thing is Ive yet to play a new PS3 game with a huge attachment to character and their history (Nathan Drake is very close to it though), so I've been looking at this game for a long long time. So thank guys for your details (even on the gameplay)

Thank you for the details and honesty, its exactly what i expected with the story and art. I love the art though. As for your experiences in gameplay it sounds even more interesting than what i've played in the demo :P. So thanks. Im willing to buy the game at any price i just was on the fence for some reason (also needed time to play only that game and no other). Since there is no Walmarts in NYC, ill miss out on the deal, but i'm still getting it on amazon.

Thanks alot guys

For me, it's the total package. It has everything I could want
  • Brilliant Presentation: It's told as if it's a book you're reading through. Coupled with the gorgeous watercolor artwork style and the excellent soundtrack, it's an RPG experience unlike any other
  • Great Characters: While some on the periphery are simple anime stereotypes, the principal cast is very down to earth and realistically portrayed such that they uniquely rise above their archetypes (the bitch, the motherly one, the clueless nice guy, etc.)
  • Story: I immensely enjoyed the story and found it to be a touching experience. It's been years since any game has been able to reach out to me in such a way. Additionally, I love that you get to see things going on with the Empire's forces from time to time. It makes them a little less bogeymen.
  • Gameplay: While some people rate it higher, this is last on my list. I do enjoy the gameplay, but it's not really a selling point for me. I like SRPGs alright. This one does have a very unique feel because of the semi-realtime gameplay while moving your characters. Some missions are too much of a puzzle such that it almost seems you're expected to try it once, then start over and do it right. It's a good part, but for me, not what I enjoyed most. However, I can say that I don't know what type of gameplay I'd like better in VC. Nothing else seems to fit.
