Valkyria Chronicles 3 [PSP] Fan Translation

You're right VC2 was actually better.

Lies.

I can't wait for this translation to be done. Have my imported copy all ready to go. It doesn't feel right that the art book is getting an official localization, but not the game. Still holding on to that small chance Sega will do a Valkyria HD Collection for PS3 with VC 1, 2, and 3 bundled together.

Yeah, then you play more and realize you're going to be seeing those maps over. and over. and over again. Then a few more times when you realize badges are awarded completely at random so you have to do the same missions multiple times just to progress through the game. All the while suffering through characters you don't care about at best, but more likely just annoy you to all hell.

One of those is a UMD size issue. I'm sure if the Blu-ray disc space was as bad as the UMD (1 gig versus 50[?] gigs?) you'd have "same"-y maps in the first VC. The other is shit I can't give a damn about if it doesn't effect gameplay (didn't care about the medals in VC1 either, just wanted the story and gameplay), the last is a preference thing. I don't mind the cast so far but most animu casts don't grate on me. The sole exception being "OMG I'M A TOMBOY BUT I'M ALSO A GURL!" tropes like Chie in Persona 4.

Some PSP models have TV out!!

Yeah, and you even get to play it in a PSP-sized window/box!

Gotta love that forced black bordering, especially when the PSP dashboard is fullscreen!

All truth.
But anyway I agree weird as hell the Art Book is coming but not the game.
I've never heard of that happening before, so hopefully it does mean something like that is making it's way to PS3.

There's a CFW plugin to get around that, or you could use your TV's zoom setting to do so as well.

Has there been cases of companies helping fan translations? I reca sega helped with a emulator or something its all pretty blurred.

There are companies that have licensed fan-translations for commercial releases. XSeed with some of the Ys games comes to mind.

Oh shit, this is awesome! I'm gonna have to check the usual import places and see if VC3 is in-stock anywhere.

Is there an effort being made by anyone on Final Fantasy Type-0 too?

On that last point maybe you're thinking of Sega getting the help of the Taxman and his retro engine to build up that new version of Sonic CD released in 2011?

Anyway, against all odds I will raise my hopes ever so slightly that something positive for VC3 comes out of all this.

Maybe with the release of Project X Zone and VC3 characters being in it, Sega might see it as a chance to make money from people who are trying to learn more about the characters?

Complete bullshit from me but I like to dream.

Honestly, I'm hoping it's not just a C&D at this point. :p

After taking down Youtube videos, nothing Sega could do anything.

Oh my lord, it's happening?!

What is the ideal way of getting a copy?

When this got announced I bought a copy of Unrecorded Chronicles from Play Asia. They have always been good for me and easy enough to get shipping from, however they are out of print / out of stock. So they might never get any more in. I'm also finding no results on NCSX. So the two import companies I trust are out the window.

Amazon under "New" has some copies that are FULFILLMENT BY AMAZON. These will NOT ship from Japan and they are around 50 bucks. You get your item directly from the company themselves, so you aren't dealing with a shifty middle man that might not give you a refund. The slightly cheaper has one copy in stock, and the other only has two, so I would jump on that quick someone if money isn't an issue.

As posting this now my advice would be don't wait and don't hesitate because Ebay might be your only other viable and that can go south sometimes depending on the seller. Just my two cents on that.

Pretty sure you can buy VC3 off PSN, no? I mean, you'll need to buy some Japanese PSN cards, but those should be easy to get versus the prospect of a potentially out-of-print PSP game.

Barring that: Yesasia.

Thanks for the reminder! I've been meaning to pick this up in anticipation of the translation release... I just used Buy It Now to grab a copy of Senjo no Valkyria (not the E2 version) off Ebay for <$30 from a Japanese seller... I've bought A LOT of PSP games and other video game stuff from Japanese Ebay sellers, and I've never had a problem (takes a couple weeks to get here from there, though)... Grabbing a copy now might save you a couple dollars - there could be a bit of a run on them once it becomes common knowledge that the patch is available... Either way, I'm glad I've got a copy; if I have to resort to a printed translation, I can do that...

Well, still kind of disappointed that fans had to take VC3 into their own hands despite the precedent of VC1 and 2. But at least this is something. Not going to be surprised though if their projected date is in Valve-time though, unless their Progress page on the blog is out of date and they've made major strides since then.

Probably going to play this on an emulator though instead of my rusty, old PSP. The Vita's screen size next to the PSP's spoiled me and I can't stand playing on a screen any smaller, and the PSP-1000 can't do video output to a TV.

Well at least you've got a fan translation. For games like the Ryu Ga Gotoku handheld games and Disaster Report 3 no such luck :(

Does it spoil VC1 at all?

It spoils a lot of the major plot beats, yeah. You hook up with Squad 7 from the original game off and on and those guys serve as mentors for the Nameless, so the game doesn't really skirt around character deaths or anything. It doesn't really go into specifics for a lot of the events from the first game it does reference, so I think there still would be value for people who end up playing 3 first to still go back and play the original game despite some of that plot knowledge, but it doesn't otherwise go mum about the fact that, say,
Isara's death
happens, for example.

Still, while I appreciate the effort, I certainly hope that this doesn't kill off any efforts/interest in getting the game officially localized.
(yea, I know, somebody is going to say what interest or something along those lines)

Is it possible to mod games off of PSN with CFW? Never tried it before.

Absolutely. My PSP-3000 runs a copy of Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions I bought off PSN, modded to patch the slowdown bug and fix the aspect ratio. Which reminds me, I really should get back to that someday.

EDIT: Oh, but read B.K.'s response below for more details.

It depends on how the patch is applied. If it's a real time patch, like the Final Fantasy Tactics patch, it should work with the PSN version. If it has to be applied to an ISO, you can download it from the PSN, extract the ISO, and then patch it.

It's been out in Japan almost three years. It's never going to have an official localization.

well atleast they did allow UDON to have the book translated.

Anyways, it's true that the game has been out for a while and yea, SEGA did state that due to low sales of 2 they had no plans of localizing 3...however, I felt at least with Sony's recent campaign with Gio/Shahid that included people asking for certain PSP titles (not to mention Atlus possible having the option of bringing it over themselves) that there was a shot...but who knows.
